How to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Chicago without the crowds
New Orleans has Mardi Gras. We have St. Paddy's Day!
After all, one of the greatest scenes in film history was shot in the middle of the famous parade.

For the diehards (and us!)
My colleague Moyo will brave the throngs of green Saturday (so you don't have to) and board the St. Patrick's Day Clover Cruise on the First Lady. The two-hour cruise starts at 10am and includes two drinks, corned beef sandwiches and, of course, a front row seat to the river dyeing ($179).

The classics
The South Side Irish Parade (free) gets a lot of attention, but let's not forget about the Irish American Heritage Center on the Northwest Side.
They go all out for the holiday with music, dancing, food and plenty for the kids at 11am Saturday. ($15 in advance or $20 Saturday).
Party from sunrise to sundown at The Shamrock Crawl, which includes breakfast and a T-shirt. Saturday 8am-8pm in Wrigleyville. (Tickets start at $59)
Close to the fun but not too close
Before all hell breaks loose downtown, take a free walking tour Friday at 1pm. It ends with happy hour at an Irish Pub. (Free)
Secure a prime viewing spot at Beatnik on the River for a table of 10 people, plus two bottles of booze and St. Patrick's food specials! ($1,000)
Impress at the party
Daisies has a St. Paddy's assortment that will definitely impress your host or guests. It includes a corned beef and cabbage rye, Irish cream & Guinness and chocolate-malt "pot of gold" croissants and iced shamrock sugar cookies. ($35)
Kickin' it in the 'burbs
Pull up a seat for St. Charles' annual parade at The Graceful Ordinary for corned beef, classic Irish coffee and their "Greener Pastures" cocktail.
The next day
Nurse the hangover — or just have a refined day — with Afternoon Tea prepared by Bittersweet, including Irish soda bread, clams casino with Guinness cream and shamrock macarons. ($105)

Tom Cruise Sets Guinness World Record for ‘Most Burning Parachute Jumps'
Tom Cruise's jaw-dropping and fiery stuntwork in 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' has landed him in the Guinness Book of World Records for most burning parachute jumps by an individual. The actor and producer has undertaken a number of death-defying stunts in the hit action franchise, but he raised the bar again this year by jumping out of a helicopter 16 times while strapped to a parachute that was pre-soaked in fuel and subsequently set on fire. The stunt required him to cut away the charred remnants of the first chute and safely deploy a backup, all in mid-air. 'Tom doesn't just play action heroes – he is an action hero,' Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief of Guinness World Records, said on Thursday. 'A large part of his success can be chalked up to his absolute focus on authenticity and pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do. It's an honor to be able to recognize his utter fearlessness with this new Guinness World Records title,' he continued. The stunt required multiple takes because the parachute could only burn for 2.5 to 3 seconds before completely disintegrating, Guinness noted. 'The audience can tell when something's been cheated, so it's important to be doing it all for-real,' added Wade Eastwood, the second unit director and stunt coordinator for 2018's 'Mission: Impossible – Fallout.' That film saw Cruise become the first actor to ever complete a HALO (High Altitude, Low Open) drop on camera. The stunt team used an actual military tactic of flying extremely high to 25,000 ft, then dropping the actor, who plummets downwards at 200 MPH to below 2,000 ft before deploying his parachute to sneak into a country without being detected. Previous stunts Cruise performed as spy Ethan Hunt include scaling the Burj Khalifa in 2011's 'Ghost Protocol' and the now relatively low-key feat of hanging off a sheer cliff face in 'Mission: Impossible 2.' Celtic Fest Ohio to bring vibrant Celtic culture to Waynesville

Renaissance Park, 10542 East State Route 73, will be rocked on Saturday, June 14, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The festival is a vibrant celebration of Celtic heritage.
