ENG vs IND 1st Test: Why are all players wearing black armbands today? Explained

By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on June 20, 2025, 15:47 IST
Cricket took a solemn pause on Friday as India and England observed a moment of silence before the start of the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, to honour the victims of the recent Ahmedabad air disaster. All players from both sides wore black armbands as a mark of respect.
The tragic incident occurred on June 12 when a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to London crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, resulting in the loss of 274 lives. The disaster claimed the lives of 181 Indian nationals and 53 British citizens, making the tribute especially meaningful for both teams.
Ahead of the toss, captains Shubman Gill and Ben Stokes joined Ravi Shastri and match officials in the centre, where England won the toss and opted to bowl first. Gill confirmed that India would have chosen to bowl as well, acknowledging the early conditions but expecting the pitch to ease out later. He also announced debutant Sai Sudharsan at No. 3 and the return of Karun Nair to the Test XI.
The tribute underlined the human connection between the two nations, reminding everyone that some moments transcend the sport.

Florian Wirtz handed RIDICULOUS test before even signing

Florian Wirtz hasn't quite joined Liverpool and he's already been handed a tough test. Welcome to Anfield! There isn't much doubt that Florian Wirtz is going to sign for Liverpool. The German is set to arrive on Merseyside this Friday to have a medical and complete a deal. Advertisement Wirtz will instantly become the most expensive player in the Reds' history. The initial £100m sent to Bayer Leverkusen actually eclipses Virgil van Dijk's current record of £75m by some way - and it may go even higher. There's potential here for Wirtz's move to become the British transfer record if all add-ons are met. Liverpool haven't broken that record since 1995. Of course, he'll need to be a success for that to happen but he'll need to be some sort of success if he's to justify the £100m part of the deal. The pressure is on right from the start, in other words, as everyone looks to see if he's worth the hype. And let's be honest: the knives will be out in some quarters as they look for any sign of failure. Advertisement Which is why it's quite incredible that he's been handed a ridiculous test before even signing for Liverpool. Florian Wirtz is already up against it The Premier League fixture list was revealed on Wednesday and Opta have done some analysis on it. They've looked into the toughest starts, using an algorithm to score the difficulty of facing each team. They score Liverpool as having the toughest opening 10 fixtures, with an average opponent rating of 93.5. This is contrast to last season, where they judged Liverpool to have been given the sixth easiest start - something that proved relatively correct as Arne Slot dropped points in just two of those fixtures. Now, this time around it's less of a concern for Slot. He knows his team, he knows the league, and he's very aware that Liverpool can win it.

ENG vs IND 1st Test: Record says Rishabh Pant is now a better wicketkeeper-batter than MS Dhoni in SENA countries

By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on June 21, 2025, 10:34 IST Rishabh Pant etched his name in the history books on Day 1 of the IND vs ENG 1st Test at Headingley by surpassing MS Dhoni to become the most successful Indian wicketkeeper-batter in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) conditions. The Indian vice-captain remained unbeaten on 65* at stumps, guiding India to a commanding 359/3 alongside skipper Shubman Gill. Pant needed just 50 runs to go past Dhoni's tally of 1,731 runs in SENA nations and did so in his trademark attacking style. His knock, laced with six boundaries and two sixes, marked his fourth half-century in England and solidified his reputation as a top performer in overseas Tests. The southpaw also became only the fourth Indian wicketkeeper to cross 3,000 runs in Test cricket, joining the elite club that includes Farokh Engineer, Syed Kirmani, and Dhoni. Pant now also holds the record for the most runs by an Asian keeper-batter in SENA countries. Pant, who currently has six centuries in Test cricket — the same as Dhoni — will resume Day 2 with an eye on claiming the record for most Test centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper. ENG vs IND 1st Test – Day 1 recap: India dominated England with a solid top-order performance. Jaiswal set the tone with a century, followed by a 91-run opening stand with KL Rahul, who fell for 42 just before Lunch. Debutant Sai Sudharsan was dismissed for a duck, but Shubman Gill (127*) and Rishabh Pant (65*) added an unbeaten 130-run stand to take India to 359/3 at stumps.
