In Manipur, security forces find 328 arms in ‘biggest single-day recovery'
In a major breakthrough, security forces have recovered 328 weapons and 8,665 assorted ammunition in separate search operations conducted in different valley districts of Manipur, officials said.
Security officials have called it the 'biggest single-day recovery' as part of the police department's ongoing operations launched to recover the stolen weapons and ammunition from the armouries of state forces.
'The recovery was made by a combined team of Manipur police, Central Armed Police Forces, Army and Assam Rifles in the intervening night of June 13 and June 14 on receipt of specific intelligence report,' one official said.
The recovered weapons include 151 SLR rifle, 65 INSAS Rifle, 73 rifles, 5 carbine gun, 2 MP5 gun, 12 Light Machine Gun, and 6 AK series rifles. Of the total ammunition recovered, 3,534 are SLR rounds, 2,186 INSAS rounds, 2,252 .303 rounds, 234 rounds of AK series, 20 9mm rounds, 10 hand grenades, three lathode shells, and seven detonators.
'These intelligence-based operations mark a major achievement for the Manipur police, the security forces, in their continued efforts to restore normalcy, maintain public order, and ensure the safety and security of citizens and their property', the DGP office said in a statement.
The statement also reiterated: 'Manipur Police is committed to a peaceful and secure Manipur. The public is urged to cooperate with the police and security forces and report any suspicious activities or information related to illegal weapons to the nearest police station or central control room'.
With this, over 5,000 weapons and more than 60,000 ammunition have been recovered to date, the police officer added. Over 6,000 weapons and over one lakh ammunition were looted from state forces' armouries since ethnic violence erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023.
To recover the looted weapons, the state government, in coordination with other security agencies, have been conducting search operations. In addition, the state also asked the public to surrender looted and illegally held weapons to nearest police station or security camps, assuring no punitive action against such voluntary surrender.
In February, Manipur saw the largest voluntary surrender of weapons across both the valley and hill districts, with 307 weapons being handed over to security forces. Of the total surrendered weapons, 246 weapons were handed over to the state by Meitei outfit, Arambai Tenggol, in a ceremony held at the 1st Manipur Rifles in Imphal, while 61 weapons were handed over by other volunteer forces from both the valley and hills.
The significant development came days after Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla issued a deadline asking youths from both the valley and hills to surrender looted and illegal weapons to avoid any punitive action and to restore peace and normalcy in the state.

Drugs worth Rs 4 crore seized in Tripura, one held
Tripura Police on Sunday seized drugs worth Rs 4 crore and arrested a drug peddler, who ferried the narcotics to the state from Mizoram via southern Assam, an official said. A police official said that during vehicle checking at Churaibari, the inter-state checkpoint in North Tripura district, police intercepted a vehicle coming from Assam and, after a thorough search, recovered over 80,000 highly addictive methamphetamine tablets valued at over Rs 4 crore. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985, the official said. He said that though the officials are interrogating the arrested person identified as Sanjay Sahani (24), they suspect that the methamphetamine tablets, also known as Yaba or party tablets, were smuggled from Myanmar. The methamphetamine tablets, a coloured pill, have become increasingly popular among young people in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, as well as Vietnam, Myanmar, India and Bangladesh. Sunday's drug seizure took place in Tripura within four days after the confiscation of marijuana (Ganja) in Agartala. On June 12, Assam Rifles, in close coordination with officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), seized approximately 195 kg of marijuana worth Rs 30 lakh from Taranagar areas on the outskirts of Agartala. Assam Rifles, in a statement, said that this interdiction is part of the sustained efforts by Assam Rifles to curb illegal activities along the India-Bangladesh border and uphold national security. Assam Rifles continues to maintain a high level of vigilance to disrupt the activities of smuggling networks operating in the northeast, the statement said. Various drugs, including methamphetamine tablets and heroin, are smuggled from Myanmar and illegally ferried to various parts of India and Bangladesh through the northeastern states. Myanmar, which shares a 1,643 km unfenced border with four northeastern states -- Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram -- serves as a key transit point for drugs and other contrabands entering India.

I can never step onto a plane, says teen who became key witness after recording Air India flight crash
For 17-year-old Parth (name changed), what began as an exciting first day at his father's new accommodation turned into a traumatic experience soon. Barely an hour after reaching Saraswati Nagar — a densely populated locality just two kilometres from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport — the teenager became an unwitting eyewitness to one of India's worst aviation disasters in recent history. Excited to see an aircraft at such a close distance, Parth, a Class 12 student, had pulled out his phone to record the sight and show it to his friends back in his native village. But within seconds, his camera captured the horrifying moment when Air India flight AI171, bound for London, plummeted from the sky and crashed in a fiery explosion. The episode has left him deeply shaken. 'I can never step onto a plane,' he said. The teenager, a native of Shamlaji taluk in Gujarat's Aravalli district, arrived in Ahmedabad around noon on June 12. His father, who had retired from the Army, had recently started working as a security guard with the Ahmedabad Metro. Just a day earlier, on June 11, he had rented a room in a small building situated between the airport and the crash site. 'I had arrived at my father's place around 12.30 p.m. and went up to the terrace after hearing that planes often flew past. I was curious, so I started filming a video of one flying unusually low — it was the closest I had ever seen a plane. At first, I thought it was preparing to land at the far end of the airport. But within moments, it crashed and exploded into flames right in front of me. The whole scene was horrifying,' he recounted to the media. None detained: police The video he recorded quickly went viral, prompting the Ahmedabad Crime Branch to record his statement on Saturday as a witness. Later, the police released a brief clarification after initial reports suggested that the boy had been detained. 'He came with his father to give a statement as a witness. He was then sent away with his father. No arrests or detentions have been made,' the police said. On Sunday morning, Kailashbhen Thakur, the landlady of the house, recounted the harrowing experience of Parth. 'He had just arrived in the city for the first time. Within an hour, he witnessed something no one should ever see,' she said. She added that the boy was deeply shaken by the experience and had decided to return to his village to resume his studies. (The boy's identity has been withheld as he is a minor)

The seized arsenal includes 151 SLRs, 65 INSAS rifles, AK series rifles, MP5s, mortars, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. This operation, led by joint teams of the Manipur Police, Army, Assam Rifles, and CAPF, is seen as a decisive move towards restoring peace and order in the violence-hit state. Over 4,000 weapons had been looted during the ethnic clashes, raising concerns over lawlessness.
