Norway suspends 2 staff members in ski jump cheating scandal at world championships
TRONDHEIM, Norway (AP) — The Norwegian ski federation has suspended a ski jumping coach and an equipment manager over their alleged role in a cheating scandal which shook the world championships this weekend.
The federation said coach Magnus Brevik and equipment manager Adrian Livelten were suspected of modifying ski suits by sewing in an extra seam in an attempt to create more lift in the air.
Norway is one of the traditional powers within ski jumping, and the cheating attempt at its home world championships has caused a massive outcry in a country that prides itself on its winter sports prowess.
Two Norwegian ski jumpers, Marius Lindvik and Johann Andre Forfang, were disqualified from Saturday's men's large hill competition after organizers said their suits broke the rules. Lindvik had finished second in the event before he was disqualified.
The federation on Sunday admitted that the suits had been deliberately altered, after a video emerged online of the alterations being made.
Brevik on Monday told Norwegian media that several team members had been involved in the decision to alter the suits, but that 'I should have stopped it.'
He claimed it was the first time they had stitched in an extra seam, but made a sailing analogy to explain why a stiffer suit would help the jumpers fly farther in the air.
'A tighter sail is better than a loose sail,' Brevik said.
The federation said Brevik and Livelten would be suspended indefinitely while inquiries continue. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation said Sunday that it had opened its own investigation.

World Cup host city organizers acknowledge immigration crackdown may impact next year's tournament
NEW YORK (AP) — Philadelphia's host city executive for the 2026 World Cup says organizers accept that an immigration crackdown by President Donald Trump's administration may be among the outside events that impact next year's tournament. 'There are certainly things that are happening at the national level, the international level, there are going to be geopolitical issues that we don't even know right now that are going affect the tournament next year, so we recognize that we're planning within uncertainty,' Meg Kane said Monday at a gathering of the 11 U.S. host city leaders, one year and two days ahead of the tournament opener. The World Cup will be played at 16 stadiums in the U.S., Mexico and Canada from June 11 to July 19 next year, a tournament expanded to 48 nations and 104 games. All matches from the quarterfinals on will be in the U.S., with the final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. 'Whether it's the Olympics, whether it's a World Cup, whether it's a Super Bowl, you name it, anytime you've got a major international sporting event, geopolitics is going to have a role,' said Alex Vasry, CEO of the New York/New Jersey host committee. Kane said the host committees must adapt to decisions made by others. 'One of the things that I think we all recognize is that we have to be really good at operating within that uncertainty,' Kane said. 'I think for each of our cities, we want to be prepared to make any person that is coming and makes the decision to come to the United States or come to this World Cup feel that they are welcome. We do not play a role necessarily in what is happening in terms of the decisions that are made.' Trump's travel ban on citizens from 12 countries exempted athletes, coaches, staff and relatives while not mentioning fans. 'We allow for FIFA to continue having constructive conversations with the administrations around visas, around workforce, around tourism,' Kane said. FIFA is running the World Cup for the first time without a local organizing committee in the host nation. Asked in late April whether FIFA president Gianni Infantino was available to discuss the tournament, FIFA director of media relations Bryan Swanson forwarded the request to a member of the media relations staff, who did not make Infantino available. Legislation approved by the House of Representatives and awaiting action in the Senate would appropriate $625 million to the Federal Emergency Management Agency 'for security, planning, and other costs related to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.' The 11 U.S. host committees have been consulting with each other on issues such as transportation for teams and VIPs, and for arranging fan fests. At the last major soccer tournament in the U.S., the 2024 Copa America final at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, started 82 minutes late after fans breached security gates. 'Certainly we were not involved in the planning or the logistics for that particular match,' said Alina Hudak, CEO of the Miami World Cup host committee. She said local police 'have done an extensive review of the after-action reports related to that in collaboration with the stadium and so all of the things that happened are in fact being reviewed and addressed and I can assure you that everything is being done within our power to make sure that the appropriate measures are being placed, the appropriate perimeters.' ___ AP soccer:

The sky is the limit.' No. 6: Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams 'He has one of the most gifted arms in the history of football. It's a Hall of Fame arm. He can't move all that well, and that's probably why he isn't ranked a little bit higher, but he makes up for it in different ways. He always knows where to go with the ball, doesn't take unnecessary sacks, and is a good decision-maker. TV doesn't do it justice the amount of throws he makes where you go, 'That's incredible he saw that.'' No. 7: C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans 'I love watching C.J. Stroud play. He's one of the purest throwers in the sport. He makes some of the darndest throws as far as accuracy that you'll see from anybody on the whole list. The ability to drop back and put a ball in a tight window 25 yards down the field is incredible. We all threw it on Stroud for the step back [compared to his rookie season] last season, but I would say it was anything but that. Was he perfect? No. Did he have some down moments? Sure, but I think a lot of those down moments were more that the team wasn't doing well so he had to try and make things happen. I have no problem with his decision-making, which is really good.' No. 8: Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers 'He's in the conversation for best pocket passer in the game. If things are all equal – the pocket is fine, somebody is open, and you need to hit a 25-yard throw on the money, Justin Herbert is on the short list of quarterbacks in the NFL that you're going to take. That is where he is amazing. When it comes to size and skill, he maybe plays bigger than any quarterback in the sport. He can run but this leads us into the negative…He doesn't do it enough. His backyard football part of the game has to improve. This is not 1988 anymore, you can't just say that you're going to be a pocket passer all day long.' No. 9: Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 'He's a pocket passer with a rocket arm and he's about as aggressive a quarterback in football right now. That's what's awesome about Baker Mayfield. He sees the field really well and for a guy that's not real big, the ability to hang in the pocket and throw high-level down-the-field type of throws with ease is as impressive as it gets. He's got every type of club you need in the world as a thrower. He can do all of that. Are there times where I think he reaches back and throws it too hard or reaches back for more and loses his control of the football? I think I've said that in years past. I still think that happens to him from time to time. But all in all, this is one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in the game right now.' No. 10: Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles 'The Super Bowl champ, the Super Bowl MVP. Really kind of an incredible year when you really think about it. The ultimate leader, that's the first thing I'll say. He's tough, he's the same guy all the time. He can handle the Philadelphia criticism good or bad and seems to take it all in stride. He brings a skillset to [the Eagles'] offense that makes them almost indefensible with all the talent they have. What he brings to the table puts it over the top to where you're just like, 'Oh my God, what do we defend?''
