Environmental breakthroughs take centre stage in Hong Kong start-up pitch competition

Every early-stage company entering the 2025 EQT Impact Challenge recognised the need to come up with a business concept that could meet three key criteria: it had to be investible, scalable, and hold promise for the long term.
The task was to convey that potential to a panel of expert jurors and demonstrate how the company's innovation could drive meaningful change.
The pitch competition, which has held previous editions in Japan, South Korea and Singapore, aims to identify and support early-stage companies with their breakthrough concepts, business plans, financial models, and ambitions to scale for long-term growth.
It is organised by EQT, one of the world's largest investment firms, with its philanthropic arm, EQT Foundation, providing the winning start-up capital to fuel growth, and access to a global network of potential industry partners and investors. The event is being held in partnership with the South China Morning Post.
The competition focuses on novel, deep tech solutions and scientific breakthroughs related to climate and nature, as well as health and well-being.
Many leading contenders were prepared to think big, putting forward ideas and solutions that, given the right backing and once scaled, have the potential to change lives on a global scale.

Peking University dropout cracks IUT – the ‘alien's language' that can upend mathematics

Zhou Zhongpeng, a 28-year-old Peking University doctoral dropout turned tech engineer , has deciphered one of mathematics' most cryptic frontiers dubbed the 'alien's language' for its impenetrable 2,000-page framework and extraterrestrial-like notation. Advertisement Japanese professor Shinichi Mochizuki's Inter-universal Teichmueller Theory (IUT) has baffled experts since its 2012 debut as a proposed proof for the ABC conjecture , a Holy Grail problem with radical implications for number theory. Armed with late-night study sessions and a discarded academic career, Zhou's breakthrough may have transformed the ABC conjecture from conceptual abstraction to computationally usable tool. The feat, achieved during weekends between gruelling 14-hour shifts as a Beijing algorithm engineer, not only revives Mochizuki's controversial theory but threatens to eclipse Andrew Wiles' famed 1995 proof of Fermat's Last Theorem in scope. 'His results are infinitely stronger than Wiles,' declared Professor Ivan Fesenko, a leading IUT authority who now mentors Zhou at Westlake University. Unitree Robotics changes to joint stock limited company, fanning IPO speculation

China's top humanoid robot start-up Unitree Robotics has converted into a company limited by shares, a move that has fanned speculation around its public listing plans, as Chinese robotics firms rapidly expand amid the country's fervour for the artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled machines. Advertisement Unitree has changed from a limited liability company into a joint stock limited company, an equivalent to a company limited by shares, according to records on Chinese corporate database Qichacha published on Thursday. In a letter to business partners, the company said the move was 'due to company development needs', according to a report by the state-run Chinese news outlet Securities Times. A robot dog from Unitree is seen at Zhejiang Overseas Talent Innovation Park in Hangzhou, China, April 23, 2025. Chinese media outlets have called Unitree's restructuring a move that paved the way for its initial public offering. Hangzhou-based Unitree did not immediately respond to a request for comment. During Hong Kong chief executive John Lee Ka-chiu's visit to Hangzhou in April, Unitree founder and CEO Wang Xingxing reportedly told him that a listing in Hong Kong was a possibility. Advertisement
