Cruise ship saves passengers, pets from disabled catamaran in South Pacific
A Carnival Cruise Line ship rescued four people and three dogs from a disabled catamaran caught in treacherous conditions in the South Pacific on Thursday morning, marking the second rescue operation by the cruise line in a week, according to a press release from Carnival Cruise Line.
"We were stuck in an interesting position," one of the rescued passengers said in video obtained by ABC News. "We got demasted, lost our engines, and after we got demasted, it was stuck under the boat, and it was hitting it on every big wave."
The Carnival Splendor diverted its course after receiving an alert from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Nouméa about a distress call. The ship reached the stranded vessel after a five-hour journey south of New Caledonia.
The situation had become increasingly dangerous for the stranded sailors.
"It was like four to five meters swell, 30 to 40 knot winds, and we're in this massive lightning storm, and the swell was coming over the boat," the rescued passenger said. "Yeah, we were dead in the water, 170 nautical miles off of New Caledonia with the three puppies."
The rescued passengers—two couples and their three dogs—are now receiving food, water, and medical assistance aboard the Carnival Splendor.

"Luckily, Carnival, the captain here was an absolute legend came and he saved the day, and now the doggies get their first cruise," the rescued passenger added.
The rescue operation won't impact the cruise schedule, with the ship's 3,300 passengers still set to visit Mystery Island and Noumea as planned before returning to Sydney on Tuesday. The Splendor departed Sydney on Monday for an eight-day round trip cruise to Vanuatu and New Caledonia, Carnival Cruise stated.
This rescue follows another recent Carnival Cruise Line operation in which the Carnival Paradise rescued five men from a makeshift raft south of Cuba last week, according to video obtained by FOX35.

Most storms in this region track away from land, moving westward out to sea, but this season's first storm seems to be behaving a bit differently than most. And that behavior could potentially impact at least one cruise sailing in the popular Mexican Riviera Tropical Storm Alvin became the first named storm of the 2025 Pacific hurricane season on Thursday, May 29, Carnival cruise passengers boarded Carnival Firenze in Long Beach, Calif. to cruise to Cabo San Lucas — the same place that the tropical system seems to be heading. On Friday morning, May 30, Tropical Storm Alvin was hurling large swells toward portions of west-central and southwestern Mexico and the southern Baja California peninsula, increasing the risk of life-threatening rip currents this weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm is expected to rapidly weaken this weekend as it swirls toward land, reaching Cabo San Lucas late Saturday night or early Sunday morning as a tropical depression. Of course, the ship's captain is no doubt keeping a close eye on the weather conditions and the storm's path. If deemed necessary, the captain will divert from the ship's planned itinerary to avoid significant impacts from the tropical system. Cruise ship captains will always do what's best for the safety of passengers and you have a Mexican Riviera or Caribbean cruise planned during hurricane season, you really shouldn't worry. As a long-time cruiser and 20-year coastal Florida resident, I can assure you that cruising during hurricane season is safe, and the majority of summer cruises are not affected by severe weather. Yes, there's always the chance that your cruise could be impacted by a storm, but your cruise line will never put your safety in jeopardy. You should be aware though that hurricanes and tropical storms do sometimes cause cruise itineraries to be altered. Occasionally, cruises also have to be canceled as a result of significant storms, especially when they warrant the closure of cruise departure ports. Sometimes, cruise ships even get stuck at sea because of hurricane-related cruise port closures. So, while some cruisers see their cruises canceled because of a storm, others get their vacations at sea example, last summer, Come Cruise With Me's Matt Frankel was on board the Margaritaville at Sea Islander when it got stuck at sea for two extra days due to Hurricane Debby. The ship's home port, Port Tampa Bay, closed due to the hurricane, so the ship couldn't safely get back until after the storm passed. Few people expected that the family cruise line would actually add adult-exclusive sailings, though. On his page, Heald even told passengers he didn't think that would ever happen. But then it did. Why the sudden shift? Is Carnival Cruise Line moving toward becoming an adults-only cruise line? They're making special casino offers to people,' Heald explained. Since both Carnival Magic and Carnival Conquest won't be out of service as originally planned for a few weeks later this year, the cruise line decided to offer some special invitation-only casino cruises to fill the reason these sailings are adults only is simply because they're casino cruises. 'Now, because they are casino offers, we cannot make those casino offers to children, which is why these cruises are for adults only because they are casino-based offered cruises and they are very popular,' Heald pointed out. These new offerings have made the brand ambassador more open to entertaining the possibility of future adults-only Carnival cruises, however. 'I understand why people are saying, 'Oh, we need an adults' cruise,'' Heald noted. 'So listen, I don't know what the future is going to hold, but let me just tell you we are not moving to an adults-only cruise line now.' Now the impacted cruises — originally three and four-night Bahamas sailings from Miami — are now off the website and not open for booking. Impacted guests can rebook comparable sailings with price protection, onboard credits, and possible airfare reimbursement. Full refunds are also available. No reason was given for the dry dock shift, but the original dates are now offered as casino sailings. Similar dry dock changes have also recently impacted Carnival Magic and Carnival the cruise industry is suing the town of Skagway in southeast Alaska over a new tax ordinance. Yeah, the policy passed late last year allows Skagway to collect sales tax on full-price cruise excursions, including commissionable fees. The Cruise Line International Association argues that this violates state and federal law, calling it unfair. Skagway officials say it ensures consistent taxation for all tourists, regardless of how they're booked. The lawsuit filed in state court seeks to overturn the ordinance and recover legal Royal Caribbean's Star of the Seas is arriving ahead of schedule again and adding another sailing. Yeah, the cruise line has announced a new four-night showcase cruise departing Port Canaveral on August 16th. This will be visiting CocoCay and offering two days at sea. This is the fourth preview sailing ahead of the ship's official seven-night Caribbean cruise on August 31st. Guests booked on later cruises can now join this cruise if they'd cruise line stocks were down on Wednesday.
