SBS turns 50: The inside story of Australia's most diverse broadcaster

SBS Australia6 hours ago

It all started in the year 1975. Two radio stations, then known as 2EA in Sydney and 3EA in Melbourne, went to air for the first time. Broadcasting began in seven languages on 2EA and eight languages on 3EA, with the first ever broadcast in Greek. "SBS has been a constant companion of multiculturalism in Australia," SBS Managing Director James Taylor said. "It was born of an idea of the Whitlam government and implemented by the Fraser government in 1975, and at the time Fraser spoke of multiculturalism being not an act of passivity, but an act of active engagement.
"I think SBS ... actively embraces the idea of multiculturalism, helps all Australians — whether you're members of the oldest continuous culture on Earth or some of the newest Australians — really feel part of this extraordinary story of difference and collegiality and compassion for one another.'

"We were lucky because all of the prime ministers had been our guests, the ministers for immigration were regularly our guests, the premiers, the Ethnic Affairs Commission and so on."

"We had to make sure that the experiment that was started on 9 June 1975 was going to be successful because we needed this radio station, this broadcasting station."

Bringing audiences a slice of home, SBS has long been the champion of football. "If you would've gone on air without mentioning football, you would've had a riot outside the station," Gentile said.
"I can guarantee you that football has been our lucky charm."

"To switch on the radio and all of a sudden you hear your language, and you hear your music, oh, that was out of this world," he said. "The [Maltese] community had been here for a while ... from the late 1970s until now, the number of people that actually arrived in Australia were not huge numbers. They arrived in the 1950s and 1960s after World War Two.
"You had this community which was established here in Australia, and all of a sudden they realised, 'I'm not the only Maltese in Australia', there are hundreds, there are thousands .... they started going to these events and they started meeting each other, so [SBS Radio] was a big influence on the Maltese community."

"There is this sense of belonging. This is 'our' radio station, this is 'our' program."

SBS television launched in 1980. Today, SBS is a multi-platform media organisation with a free-to-air service spanning six channels: SBS, NITV, SBS Viceland, SBS Food, SBS World Movies and SBS World Watch — as well as its digital offerings on SBS On Demand.
"We are Australia's most trusted news service. This is a really important foundation for public broadcasting," Taylor said. "We've got a really strong focus on being impartial, on sharing a pluralistic set of views with audiences — not telling them what to think, but giving them information so that they can make their own informed choices.
"We are the podcaster of the year, three years in a row.'

01/06/2025 16:18 SBS has been telling First Nations stories all along — whether on radio or television, in news and current affairs. NITV joined SBS in 2012, with its first broadcast from Uluru. "Indigenous stories, it's just so important that we tell them, and this for the first time opened the door to be able to bring broader Australia along the journey with us," said Natalie Ahmat, NITV Presenter and SBS's Head of Indigenous News and Current Affairs.
"Particularly multicultural and new Australians are hungry for these stories and really want to learn more about the First Peoples of the country that they've come to call home."

One of the new additions, SBS Malay, was created in 2023. "In the past 10 years, there has been an influx of younger semi-skilled and non-skilled Malaysian migrants coming to Australia to seek a better life," SBS Malay's Zaini Ahmad said.
"They get exploited and they have very little or no English and they really need SBS Malay to navigate their way through their new homeland."

"Next year, in the middle of the year, we get to bring the world's largest sporting event to Australians, again, which is the FIFA Men's World Cup — over 100 matches exclusively on SBS through SBS television and On Demand," Taylor said. "And over the next year, we're working on a business case to government to create a production presence and talent incubator in Western Sydney. "It's a really great opportunity for us to move to the next stage of this project to deliver a production presence, to allow us to make thousands of hours more content and to engage with young content creators in this incredibly vibrant part of Australia." As Australia's most diverse broadcaster, SBS aims to inspire all Australians to explore, respect and celebrate our diverse world and in doing so, promote an inclusive and cohesive society. There are exciting plans to bring even more distinct SBS content and storytelling to your screens and devices, at home or on the go. Your stories have shaped SBS for half a century. Together, we're just getting started. Join us as we celebrate 50 years of belonging on our SBS50 portal and SBS50 content hub .

Inside Will Smith's $3.8 million motorhome that's better than most houses

Being an actor often entails spending extended periods away from family and constantly being on the move. While many of us dream of living the luxurious life that celebrities experience, this lifestyle can become exhausting, or so actors keep telling us. For Will Smith, he may have discovered the ultimate solution to these challenges; however, the only problem is that it doesn't come cheap. The 'Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' star, who has a reported net worth of around $540 million, once owned a custom two-storey motorhome worth $3.8 million ($US2.5 million), which is significantly more valuable than most Aussie houses. The Hollywood star dropped $2.5 million on a fully customised, two-storey RV by Anderson Mobile Estates that boasts enough amenities to rival even the fanciest homes. Ron Anderson, who helped to design the trailer, ran through the fine details and explored the expensive materials used to bring it to life. 'This is the biggest, tallest, widest, most luxurious RV in the world,' Anderson said. 'Will Smith contacted me and said I want something unique; I said, 'I got it.' 'There's no amount of money that you could offer me to break that trust.' This massive 22-wheeled vehicle has it all, from expensive countertops to a home cinema. Known as 'The Heat', this sprawling home features an expansive roof that rises to 107cm to create an upstairs level, housing an impressive 30-person cinema with automatic shades and a 100-inch TV. If (for some reason) a cinema with 30 seats doesn't interest you, the room can also be transformed into a luxurious office space. The first level of the home on wheels features a full kitchen estimated to be worth around $300,000, a dining room, two lounges — one of which boasts a professional makeup station — and a small office, while the other serves as a wardrobe. The downstairs area features a $38,000 bathroom that spans the full width of the trailer, complete with a glass door that turns opaque at the touch of a button, a sauna shower, and a separate toilet. The luxury extends beyond that, as the motorhome boasts 111.5 square metres of living space, 14 televisions, leather furnishings valued at $462,000, and technology worth over $192,500. All doors on the RV are automatic and were dubbed 'Star Trek' doors by Anderson when the RV was first unveiled in the early 2000s. Will used to own 'The Heat' for decades and famously lived in it while filming Ali, Men in Black III, and The Pursuit of Happyness. If you're willing to pay for the experience, this luxurious 22-wheeler is now available for hire at a rate of $13,800 per night. Will Smith is currently residing in a $66m custom-built compound in Calabasas, California, which he has owned for several years. The house was designed by architect Stephen Samuelson, who collaborated with Will Smith and Pinkett Smith in 1997, inspired by the work he had done on the home of Carol Burnett, according to Architectural Digest. The property boasts nine bedrooms and 13 bathrooms. The residence features a meditation lounge, a recording studio, a sunken trampoline, and courts for basketball, tennis, and volleyball. The home graced the cover of Architectural Digest in 2011 and was briefly listed for sale for $42 million in 2014. In September 2021, the couple had to renovate the property after a basement fire caused smoke damage. The family was home when the fire broke out, but no injuries were reported, according to the New York Post. Pinkett Smith reportedly filmed her former talk show 'Red Table Talk' inside the Calabasas home. Last year, the pair parted ways with one of the more modest properties in their robust real estate portfolio.

Sophie Monk lands big US TV gig

Love Island Australia host Sophie Monk has landed a big US TV gig, hosting a talk show offshoot for the American version of the show. Monk will be the new host of Love Island USA Aftersun, a weekly talk show featuring interviews with contestants and behind-the-scenes gossip from the show. She replaces current Aftersun host Maura Higgins, a former Love Island USA and UK contestant. Love Island USA announced the new appointment on its socials over the weekend, earning a positive reaction from fans and even the show's outgoing host: 'Yesss Queen,' wrote a supportive Higgins. It marks a big career leap for Monk, 45, who has hosted Love Island Australia across all six of its seasons. The US television role will mark Monk's return to the market, following a successful LA stint in the early noughties that saw her appear in films like Date Movie, Click and in an episode of the TV show Entourage. The TV host, who first shot to fame as one-fifth of the Popstars girl group Bardot, spent 10 years living in the US and trying to make it big as an actor before returning home to Australia in 2015. Monk's career news comes days after she made another big move – selling what is believed to have been her first ever home on the Gold Coast for $595,000. She'd purchased the unit in 2003 for just $165,000. It's the second home sale Monk's made in the past 12 months: She'd earlier sold a five-bedroom, three-bathroom Helensvale home for $1.76 million in 2024. Monk's also making a return to the big screen with her next project: She'll appear in the horror-comedy film Zombie Plane, alongside a slew of other stars including Vanilla Ice, Chuck Norris and Joey Vieira, all playing fictionalised versions of themselves.
