New Detroit businesses awarded $450K by Motor City Match

New small businesses in Detroit were given a boost by the Motor City Match.
Many of these entrepreneurs admit that without the Motor City Match grant, it would be difficult to move forward.
DETROIT (FOX 2) - The small business landscape in Detroit is set to receive a major boost.
Earlier Wednesday, Motor City Match's Round 28 cash grant recipients were celebrated at an awards ceremony. Thousands of dollars in grant money were awarded, helping these entrepreneurs keep their dreams alive.
Local perspective
Eduardo Salas calls himself an entrepreneur with his vision of a coffeehouse in SW Detroit, and a Motor City Match grant is making it possible.
"I will be using the $30K that'll be going toward that build-out design services, getting permitting from the city," he said.
Salas joined other Motor City Match winners on Wednesday at an awards ceremony, where over $450,000 was awarded to 12 businesses.
The backstory
From restaurants and fitness centers to a business that can change the way one sees themselves. For one Motor City Match winner, the path to starting a doll business grew from an experience with her own daughters.
"It was actually a trip to a popular doll store that we saw that the images that were projected on us as black and brown women and girls were really harmful, and we decided to create our own doll line called the Pretty Brown Girl Doll and the doll sparked an entire movement," said Motor City Match recipient Sheri Crawley.
That movement went global, but as Sheri Crawley looked to purchase a building in Detroit, she needed help. Motor City Match heard the call and awarded Crawley $50,000.
"It was already a stretch to purchase the building, so this will be able to allow us to close the gap for the renovations," she said.
What's next
Many of these entrepreneurs admit that without the Motor City Match grant, it would be difficult to move forward.
"That $30K just helps us continue moving forward now, as opposed to thinking one day, maybe next year, really makes that dream a possibility today," said Salas.
"There's not many cities in urban America that this opportunity is afforded, so we are so lucky to have this opportunity here in Detroit," said Motor City Match recipient Angela Wright.

Eastern Market has always been a showcase for entrepreneurs - standing the test of time
The Brief Detroit's Eastern Market started in the 1800s and is as relevant to the metro area as ever. In addition to produce and food, it has provided a platform for entrepreneurs and vendors. Vendors are always welcome and the application process can be done online from mid-February to May 1st. DETROIT (FOX 2) - Best known for flower days, farmer's markets and Lions tailgates, Detroit's Eastern Market has a rich history dating back to the 1800s. If you've been there before, you likely think of the sheds - a hub for vendors to set up shop looking for fresh and local goods. The backstory "On a busy Saturday during the summer months, you will see several hundred businesses or vendors in the sheds," said Katy Trudeau. The market itself has always been a way to get fresh food to an area that is often underserved - and while much has changed in the past century, some things remain. "One of the things that all types of entrepreneurs are attracted to at Eastern Market, is that entrepreneurial spirit that started over 100 years ago," she said. That same spirit drew business owner Bethany Shorb to open Well Done Goods. "It started here just as a workshop," Shorb said. "We do all of our screen printing in-house too." Now, 20 years later, the workshop evolved to a brick and mortar location. "We just continued to grow as demand arose," she said. It's a similar story for the owner of Shops on Top, Deron Washington, he jumped at the chance to be a part of the rich history. "I used to come to Eastern Market as a kid and I'm like wow, now I've got a business here in Eastern Market," said Deron Washington. "What a blessing." Both Washington and Shorb have learned, it's easy to get customers when the sheds are open - the trick is giving people a reason to come back when they are closed. "I definitely lean into the customer service, but I do have some nice merchandise too," Washington said. "We (asked) what can we come up with in terms of our brand and we say, 'Y not Detroit'?" Whether it is building a brand, or being able to pivot to meet a need, success at Eastern Market is about carving your own path. "We constantly adapted. During Covid we made wild screen-printed ties and T-shirts and no one was wearing ties when they're in front of their Zoom computer, they are wearing sweatpants, so we started making masks." As for the bread and butter at Eastern Market, you can find it, and so much more, at one of the many sheds which are transformed during the weekends and summertime. "We brought back our Tuesday Summer Market and kicked off the Sunday Summer Markets on Sunday," Trudeau said. Market Days are a staple and something customers have come to rely on. "It's a really important commercial district to Detroit and the region's economy, but we also have to be attracting more residents in and around the area," she said. Right now Eastern Market has plans to grow right alongside the neighborhood starting construction on Shed 7 this summer. Shake Shack opens new St. Louis County location
ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — The popular burger chain, Shake Shack, is gearing up to open their seventh St. Louis-area location next week. A Shake Shack spokesperson told FOX 2 in April the new location will open at 10752 Sunset Hills Plaza in St. Louis County. The new restaurant will open inside a former Fuddruckers on Wednesday, June 18. The location planned for Shake Shack previously housed Fuddruckers, a longtime chain known for its build-your-own burger concept. It was the last Fuddruckers in the St. Louis region, and it recently closed its doors. Police: Suspect tracked obituaries, stole from dead St. Louis County residents Shake Shack is known for its burgers, hot dogs, crinkle-cut fries, and hand-spun milkshakes with an elevated experience compared to traditional fast-food chains. The Sunset Hills Plaza location will join six other locations in St. Louis' Central West End neighborhood, Ladue, Des Peres, and Chesterfield, in addition to stands at the Enterprise Center and Lambert International Airport. Detroit man arrested for shooting gun from Lamborghini on Ford Road to celebrate wedding
The Brief A Detroit man was arrested after shooting a gun from a Lamborghini. The car was rented and it happened during a wedding celebration Sunday. Dearborn police said the suspect is out on bond. DEARBORN, Mich. (FOX 2) - A passenger inside a purple Lamborghini Huracán was caught on camera firing gunshots out the window Sunday in Dearborn. The backstory The shooting took place on Ford Road near Evergreen, which was recorded by a witness, and another driver's dashcam. A Detroit man, Hasan Rabat of Detroit, was arrested given a citation for a reckless discharge. Rabat is a CPL holder and the shooting was celebratory in connection to a local wedding. Dispatch: "911 was your emergency?" Caller: I'm on Ford Road. This guy is shooting guns in the middle of Ford Road." "There's this habit of people renting vehicles and celebrating on their way to weddings," said Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin. "They stop and block traffic and fire a gun out of the window in celebration." Responding officers tracked the vehicle down. "We tracked the vehicle at a local hall where they were celebrating the wedding and impounded the vehicle," Shahin said. Rabat who was related to the wedding party, is currently out on bond. "We issued them a citation for a reckless discharge," Shahin said. Police say it is not just wedding parties they're concerned about. "I would encourage parents as well - don't rent these cars for your kids for graduation because nothing good is going to come out of it," the chief said. Shahin is now using social media to spread his message about renting high-end vehicles and committing crimes. "This Lamborghini was impounded because it was driving recklessly and people were shooting out of the windows," Shahin said in a social media post. "If you rent cars and drive recklessly anytime in the city wedding or not, your car will be in the same spot." Shahin said it's a warning.
