Djokovic claims first clay win of the season in Geneva
Novak Djokovic secured his first claycourt victory of the 2025 season as the 24-time Grand Slam champion eased into the Geneva Open quarter-finals, defeating Hungary's Marton Fucsovics 6-2 6-3 on Wednesday.
It was the Serbian's first win on clay since he claimed the gold medal at last year's Paris Olympics, having recently suffered early exits in Monte Carlo and Madrid.
Djokovic put on a commanding performance, wrapping up the 75-minute match without facing a single break point and dictating play from the baseline with sharp groundstrokes.
"My first win this season on clay. It's great to break the ice in a way," Djokovic said on court.
"It is a very demanding surface. We all know how tricky it is to play on clay, compared to the other surfaces, you always have to expect an extra ball, an extra shot.
"Today I think that (my serve) was my strongest shot. I think it makes life on the court a bit easier, so I am very glad to be able to play the best tennis when needed."
Djokovic, who turns 38 on Thursday, continues his quest for a 100th tour title at the ATP250 event leading up to Roland Garros.
The victory comes just a week after Djokovic ended his six-month partnership with coach Andy Murray, with the former world number one confirming he will continue without a coach for now.
Djokovic will next face Italy's Matteo Arnaldi in the Geneva quarter-finals, looking to avenge his defeat to the 24-year-old in Madrid last month.

Top seed and home favourite Alexander Zverev beat Brandon Nakashima 7-5 6-4 to advance to the semi-finals of the Stuttgart Open on Friday while Americans Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton also reached the last four. Zverev is seeking his first grasscourt title and he was involved in a tight opening set which was tied at 5-5 when the German switched gears in the final two games to clinch it. But Zverev was far more dominant against his American opponent in the second set as he finished the match with 31 winners in a contest that lasted 90 minutes. "I'm in the semi-finals now and now I really want to focus on trying to do the best I can," Zverev said. "I know the opponents are going to get tougher but I'm really happy on the court right now I'm really happy in Stuttgart and I'm looking forward to the next two days." Zverev will play third seed Shelton next after the American, who was virtually unstoppable on his first serve, beat Jiri Lehecka 6-4 6-4, firing 18 aces. Shelton was so dominant in the second set that he did not lose a single point on serve while he won 100 per cent of his first-serve points in the match, with victory ensuring he will break into the top 10 for the first time in his career.
