What are the hallmarks of an elite MBA program?
Many would likely say strong alumni and networking opportunities. High on most lists are practical applications in and out of the classroom. A strong career department with the ability to launch graduates into dream positions never hurts. And offering all of that at an economic value — highly sought after.
Edgar Meyer, dean of the Birmingham Business School, says The Birmingham MBA has it all.
'Birmingham Business School works with industry partners from all over the world to enhance student experience, hone curriculum, inform our research and help us make a positive impact upon society,' Meyer says.
Highlighting those industry partners, Meyer says, is the school's Advisory Board, which is globally recognized and case-studied on what makes an Advisory Board add value. The mission of the Advisory Board — which consists of high-level executives — is to link the school to corporate partnerships.
'All our taught degree programs benefit from company engagements which include tailored guest lectures, workshops, module design, external program review and labor market testing, group company projects, and visits,' Meyer says. 'This year alone, we have involvement of more than 50 companies — ranging from world-renowned brands such as Coca-Cola to local tech startups such as Alpomi.'
DELOITTE CONSULTANCY CHALLENGE: A HIGHLIGHT OF THE BIRMINGHAM MBA
To emphasize hands-on learning, Meyer says the school runs a number of challenges geared towards immersing students in the practice of particular industries. One of those is the Capgemini Community Challenge. The weeklong challenge takes place at Capgemini's client-solutions facilities, and students actually produce consultancy projects for third-sector clients.
Another highlight of the MBA at Birmingham is the Deloitte Consultancy Program.
'An intense week of learning about consultancy and problem solving,' Meyer says of the program, also calling it a 'cornerstone' of the Birmingham MBA. 'Working on life challenges, rather than analyzing past events through case studies, enables MBA students to appreciate the adaptability they need in applying what they know. It builds resilience, but more importantly, confidence, in being able to tackle challenges in organizations.'
These industry partnerships also give students opportunities to meet with people already in the roles they might want to pursue after graduating from the MBA program. 'Meeting leaders is particularly important for MBA students to appreciate how leadership operates in practice — with all its opportunities and challenges,' Meyer explains. 'It also allows MBA students to imagine a future for themselves as we bring a diverse range of senior leaders and entrepreneurs onto the MBA program throughout the year.'

PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — The South Dakota Retirement System's investments have rebounded a bit. The estimated return, covering the 11 months through May 31, was 3.2 to 3.7%, senior portfolio manager Darci Haug told SDRS trustees on Wednesday. 'We aren't keeping up with the markets because of our conservative positioning,' portfolio manager Danielle Mourer explained. The South Dakota Investment Council oversees the SDRS portfolio. That's how the council currently sees the markets. Nonetheless, being back in the black was an improvement over the April 9 report to the SDRS trustees. On that date, SDRS investments as a whole were down between 3 and 3.5%. The very next day, they had regained some of that lost value and were down 0.5 to 1%. Jarrod Edelen, another of the portfolio's managers, said earnings by different sectors have been volatile of late and varied widely. Technology investments such as computer chips were recently up 27% while energy investments overall were down 7%, he said. The fair market value of SDRS investments was $15 billion as of May 31, Haug said. How the SDRS investments fare year to year largely determines the size of the annual cost of living adjustment paid the following year to the system's retirees and other beneficiaries. SDRS senior actuary Doug Fiddler told the board that the COLA taking effect on July 1, 2025, will be 1.71%. That was calculated using the third quarter 2024 inflation rate of 2.49%. Fiddler estimated that a 3.5% annual return for fiscal 2025 would result in a COLA of approximately 1.4% taking effect on July 1, 2026. He said benefit payments to approximately 80% of SDRS retirees have been falling short of keeping up inflation by about 10%. Fiddler presented a chart showing the S&P 500 has been in a volatile stretch lately, dropping about 20% in April and gradually rebounding since then. Fiddler said that he had planned to brief the trustees on corrective actions that might be necessary when the SDRS investments were in the red for the year. But he changed his mind after seeing the number get back into the black. SDRS executive director Travis Almond spoke about market volatility to the board after Fiddler's presentation. 'So who knows how the end of this fiscal year lands,' Almond said. He suggested that the trustees keep themselves familiar with the corrections plan. Brigham City Peach Days vendor restricted from selling beverages

BRIGHAM CITY, Utah () — Brigham City's Peach Days draws a large crowd every year, but vendors are concerned about a new restriction on beverage sales. Previously, vendors could sell their own beverages, but this year they're being told that's not an option. In a statement to ABC4, the Box Elder Chamber of Commerce said that this decision was made to 'align with the terms outlined in its existing beverage contract.' The current contract with Swire Coca-Cola requires that other vendors not sell beverages at the event, though they have 'opted not to enforce these restrictions' in previous years. One of those vendors, Cory Anderson, said that this is not the first time they've had trouble with the Chamber of Commerce, and this decision will impact his business. Anderson is the manager and co-owner of Anderson's Art and Antiques in Brigham City. During Peach Days, they've sold 'lemon shakers' and kettle corn at the celebration. For several years, Anderson worked to be able to sell their lemonade — which they turned into lemon shakers due to restrictions — at the event, but they were often told 'no' due to noncompetes. Instead of selling at Peach Days, Anderson began selling beverages at the car show that was attached to but not part of Peach Days. When the car show became part of Peach Days, Anderson pushed to stay part of the vendors at the car show, even though it was now overseen by the chamber. In response, he said that they sandwiched his booth between two Coca-Cola trailers. And that didn't make sense, because you're running an event with 70,000 people in the summertime… it's just kind of disaster waiting to strike,' Anderson said. 'But those were the rules, we were threatened that we would get kicked out if we didn't follow everything.' Not only was Anderson told he couldn't sell regular lemonade, they were also told not to sell or give out water, even in the event of an emergency. The chamber only allows EMS to give out water at Peach Days, and Anderson said it's roughly a mile from where he's located at the car show. 'If there were other competitors at Peach Days that sold the same things as us or they gave out water or anything, we'd really feel like there's not competition to us. We sell as many lemonades as we can possibly pump out… we do 800+ lemonade sales,' Anderson stated. This year, Anderson said the Box Elder Chamber of Commerce has completely disallowed the sale of beverages of any kind. Anderson said he struggles to understand why they would pull away profit for local businesses who depend on Peach Days. His father attended a board meeting to find out why this year was different, and Anderson said that Councilman Dave Jefferies heard their problems and said he would try to help them get back into the show. A little while later, he said that he couldn't help them anymore. 'It just doesn't even make any sense. We're not looking to make a big problem out of this, we've just asked so many times … and never get an answer that makes sense,' Anderson said. Community worried about poaching at a Brigham City park Anderson said that they have felt singled out by the Chamber of Commerce over the years, and this felt like a furthering of that. He hopes that the chamber will reverse this decision, and that all they really want is to sell their lemon shakers at the car show, and their exclusion will cost them $6,000 in revenue. Wall Street Bulls Look Optimistic About Coca-Cola (KO): Should You Buy?

Investors often turn to recommendations made by Wall Street analysts before making a Buy, Sell, or Hold decision about a stock. While media reports about rating changes by these brokerage-firm employed (or sell-side) analysts often affect a stock's price, do they really matter? Before we discuss the reliability of brokerage recommendations and how to use them to your advantage, let's see what these Wall Street heavyweights think about Coca-Cola (KO). Coca-Cola currently has an average brokerage recommendation (ABR) of 1.17, on a scale of 1 to 5 (Strong Buy to Strong Sell), calculated based on the actual recommendations (Buy, Hold, Sell, etc.) made by 24 brokerage firms. An ABR of 1.17 approximates between Strong Buy and Buy. Of the 24 recommendations that derive the current ABR, 21 are Strong Buy and two are Buy. Strong Buy and Buy respectively account for 87.5% and 8.3% of all recommendations. According to several studies, brokerage recommendations have little to no success guiding investors to choose stocks with the most potential for price appreciation. Are you wondering why? The vested interest of brokerage firms in a stock they cover often results in a strong positive bias of their analysts in rating it. Our research shows that for every "Strong Sell" recommendation, brokerage firms assign five "Strong Buy" recommendations. This means that the interests of these institutions are not always aligned with those of retail investors, giving little insight into the direction of a stock's future price movement. In contrast, the Zacks Rank is driven by earnings estimate revisions. And near-term stock price movements are strongly correlated with trends in earnings estimate revisions, according to empirical research. Furthermore, the different grades of the Zacks Rank are applied proportionately across all stocks for which brokerage analysts provide earnings estimates for the current year. In other words, at all times, this tool maintains a balance among the five ranks it assigns. There is also a key difference between the ABR and Zacks Rank when it comes to freshness. When you look at the ABR, it may not be up-to-date. Nonetheless, since brokerage analysts constantly revise their earnings estimates to reflect changing business trends, and their actions get reflected in the Zacks Rank quickly enough, it is always timely in predicting future stock prices. In terms of earnings estimate revisions for Coca-Cola, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for the current year has increased 0.1% over the past month to $2.96. Analysts' growing optimism over the company's earnings prospects, as indicated by strong agreement among them in revising EPS estimates higher, could be a legitimate reason for the stock to soar in the near term. The size of the recent change in the consensus estimate, along with three other factors related to earnings estimates, has resulted in a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) for Coca-Cola.
