Xabi Alonso on the Bundesliga's title race: "A lot can happen"
Bayer Leverkusen avoided a fourth successive defeat as the German champions came from 3-1 down to beat VfB Stuttgart 4-3 on Sunday evening.
The win saw Leverkusen close the gap on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich to six points, meaning there's still plenty to play for with eight games remaining.
"To have that great feeling again after these ten days - that was important for all of us," said Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso after the game.
As for the title race, he said all Leverkusen can do is try to win their remaining games.
'A lot can happen. We have to win game by game. It's out of our hands.'
Leverkusen midfielder Robert Andrich also made it clear that Leverkusen have not given up on overtaking Bayern at the top of the table.
"We just want to keep them on their toes until the end," he said.

Real Madrid Boss Alonso Says Team Has ‘Little Time' For Club World Cup
New Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso said that his team has "little time" to prepare ahead of the ... More Club World Cup. New Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso said that his team has 'little time' to prepare ahead of the Club World Cup. The newly-reimagined, 32-team FIFA competition kicked off on Saturday with a 0-0 draw between Al-Ahly and FC Barcelona legend Lionel Messi's Inter Miami which was enjoyed by 60,000 punters. Madrid has already landed in the Floridian city ahead of his men's own opening fixture against Neymar's former club Al-Hilal midweek, and noted that 'everything has to be accelerated because we have little time to get to know each other and train'. "We'll start to team up because we have three training sessions before the first game," added Alonso, while further staying that Los Blancos 'come with a lot of desire and with the illusion of having a good tournament to go all the way' amid monstrous prize money being on offer. With Carlo Ancelotti's mostly victorious cycle having come to an end, as the Italian now oversees the Brazil national team, Alonso noted that the club he played for as a midfielder under Carletto in the mid-2010s is 'starting a new stage' where ending domestic dominance from FC Barcelona is the first port of call. 'We have to prioritise what is important: what we want to be, how we want to play and that we feel it. We want to be able to do that from the first moment, from the match against Al Hilal. First we must recognize ourselves,' he demanded. Alonso stated that his sessions with the players have thus far 'been very positive'. 'Little by little you get to know them, you have that much-needed contact and little by little more players are arriving,' he concluded, in a nod to signings such as Trent Alexander-Arnold. Though coming home with the trophy isn't make or break for Alonso, Real Madrid isn't going to the United States and the Club World Cup to make the numbers up. This has already been communicated by the coach, striker Kylian Mbappe and even president Florentino Perez as he unveiled new signing Alexander-Arnold before the flight to Miami.

Bayer Leverkusen linked with attackers Johan Bakayoko and Justin Kluivert
Holland's Voetbal International and England's Talk Sport both have fresh news to report regarding Bayer Leverkusen transfer rumors. The 2023/24 Bundesliga champions are being linked with Johan Bakayoko and Justin Kluivert as part of their sorely needed summer restock in attack. Bakayoko could serve as a direct replacement for Jeremie Frimpong while Kluivert – in his new role as a ten – could help die Werkself absorb the loss of Florian Wirtz. Bakayoko enters the final year of his contract with PSV Eindhoven. The Eredivisie champions reportedly seek a €20m transfer fee for the 22-year-old. This could constitute something of a steal as the 18-times-capped international currently maintains a €30m estimated market value, down from a peak of €45m in May 2024. Bakayoko still scored 12 goals and registered three assists last season. Advertisement The Kluivert links prove interesting as the son of Dutch legend Patrick Kluivert does have some Bundesliga experience. The current Bournemouth man spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan with the German Red Bulls from AS Roma. Kluivert scored four goals in 27 appearances across all competitions for Julian Nagelsmann's RB that season. Memorably, he netted what would prove the match-winner in a Champions League encounter against Manchester United. Kluivert could potentially fancy a return to German football and a possible reunion with former Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag. The Talk Sport report nevertheless makes it clear that Kluivert's Premier League club aren't interested in selling him. Kluivert has more than tripled his estimated market value since moving to England ahead of the 2023/24 season. In the last six months alone, the seven-times-capped international has pumped up his value from €22m to €35m. GGFN | Peter Weis
