Record number of machetes seized in Victoria this year, police say
Police have seized a record number of illegal knives from Victorian streets this year, with an average of 44 confiscated every day.
As of this week, Victoria Police said it had seized 6,876 blades, machetes and zombie knives, with about three-quarters taken from people in metropolitan Melbourne.
The state police force's publication of illegal knife seizures on Friday comes amid a push by the state government and law enforcement to drive down knife crime.
This includes a ban on the sale of machetes from stores across the state, which took effect last week.
Police said the number of knives seized this year was expected to pass the 2024 total of 14,805 — an average of 40 per day.
The force said there had been a 31 per cent increase in knives it's seized and destroyed since 2015.
"Recent incidents, including the Northland youth gang fight and a mass stabbing in Bairnsdale, have understandably heightened community concern around the prevalence of knives in the community," a police spokesperson said.
The Northland shopping centre brawl involving seven young males in Preston on May 25 sent frightened shoppers fleeing the complex or hiding in stores.
In the same week, a woman in Bairnsdale in the state's east allegedly stabbed four men.
Earlier this week, two teenagers were injured in a suspected machete attack in the Victorian town of Shepparton.
Police said officers conducted regular "designated weapons search operations" at busy community locations, including 11 so far this year at transport hubs and shopping centres.
During the search operations this year, officers have seized 59 illegal knives this way, police said.
"While this is only a very small percentage of the almost 6,900 edged weapons seized this year, these operations remain integral to both preventing people carrying knives and ensuring the community feels safe," police said.

Man charged after stolen car hauling stolen vegetables catches fire on motorway
An alleged veggie bandit hauling a boot-load of ill-gotten sweet potatoes and other fresh food has been charged after the allegedly stolen car caught fire on the M1 at the Gold Coast on Monday night. Queensland Police said officers spotted the 2009 Ford Focus bearing false registration plates driving dangerously in the northbound lanes of the Pacific Motorway at Robina at about 10.20pm. The car began shedding debris from under the engine bay before catching fire. The driver pulled over around the Gooding Drive exit where he was taken into custody and officers used a fire-extinguisher to put out the flames. No one was injured during the incident. 'A subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered a significant quantity of sweet potatoes, potatoes, wraps and almond milk, which had been stolen from a fresh-food grocer at Robina shortly beforehand,' Queensland Police said in a statement on Tuesday. The car had been reported stolen from Mayfair Place at Stretton, in Brisbane's south, in the early hours of May 27. The driver, a 36-year-old from Chambers Flat in Logan, south of Brisbane, has now been charged with three counts of stealing, two counts of fraud and one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, disqualified driving, drink driving, attaching false plates and possessing tainted property.

Man pleads guilty over footage of women getting undressed at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital sleep clinic
A man who worked in a sleep clinic at a major Perth hospital has pleaded guilty to a dozen charges relating to footage of women getting undressed. Police alleged Stuart James King, who worked in IT at the clinic at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, kept the footage on his personal computer. The clients knew they were to be filmed as part of their analysis and treatment for sleep disorders, but the footage was not intended for anyone's personal use. The footage, which showed the women getting undressed and dressed, was recorded in 2019 and 2020. Police charged King with more than two dozen counts of unlawful use of a computer earlier this year, after executing a search warrant at his home. Appearing in Perth Magistrates Court via video link from prison, the 51-year-old pleaded guilty to 12 charges but the remaining charges were dropped. He is scheduled to appear in court again in September for a sentencing hearing. The man worked in IT at the hospital and was not a clinician. After the charges came to light, North Metropolitan Health Service said "immediate action was taken" as soon as it was informed of the matter and he was no longer employed.

A second person has faced court over the alleged kidnapping and torture of a 19-year-old woman in Cairns. Semias Donnelly, 23, was arrested in the Cairns suburb of Freshwater on Monday. He has been charged with three counts of common assault, and one count each of threats, deprivation of liberty unlawfully detaining or confining a person and torture.
