Crossroads businesses frustrated by city's parking rules

Yahoo08-04-2025

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Business leaders in the Crossroads District are fed up. First, it was crime. Now, they say parking is a disaster, and they fear it could drive away customers and hurt their businesses.
'We need somebody to give us a break down here in this area and let us do some business,' said Nancy Smith, managing partner at Extra Virgin and operator of Farina, both popular spots in the district.

This isn't the first time a major Downtown Kansas City neighborhood has raised concerns. Less than six months ago, River Market businesses successfully changed the city's parking rules.
Now, Crossroads leaders are pushing for the same following a difficult situation during First Fridays this past week.
Smith isn't alone in her frustration. For many, parking has become a growing issue that extends beyond just customers. Smith says the situation has impacted her employees as well.
Smith says people are being ticketed even when the meters aren't working.
This past Friday marked the kickoff of the First Fridays event in the Crossroads, a monthly event that draws tens of thousands for food, art and entertainment.
But while the event brings excitement and vibrancy to the area, it also highlights the parking challenges businesses are facing.
Smith took to social media to share her frustrations, tagging Mayor Lucas in a Facebook post, saying:
'Incorrect signage still posted. People are getting tickets even after the post time. Businesses will close— is anyone paying attention?? Anyone in office going to help out businesses??'
When asked if they are running out of options she responded:
'We do, and yes, I'll say that 100% because we've tried to address things,' Smith explained.
The things she's looking to address:
Crime
Parking
Incorrect signage posting
'There's a group of us that are really running out of options and would like some help from the city.'
A major concern for Smith and others is the extension of paid parking hours pushing past the old 6 p.m. cutoff and into the weekends in some areas.
'There is plenty of dining options out in the suburbs where parking is plentiful and free in the evenings,' she said.
With their busy spring and summer seasons on the horizon, Smith is speaking out in hopes of finding a solution before things get worse.

'Daytime, nighttime customers, I just feel like we've been fighting this uphill battle with the parking and the ticketing and the incorrect signage,' Smith said. 'We shouldn't be discouraging people from coming here by having paid parking seven days a week and into the evenings. That's just hurting all of us.'
FOX4 reached out to the city of Kansas City for comment. They confirmed that they are in conversation with Smith and are working with the parking division to address the issue. They plan to provide more information later this week.

Fact Check: Bernie Sanders did not say 'Why not both?' to impeaching Trump and deporting Musk

Claim: U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders said, "Elon is calling for Trump's impeachment. MAGA is calling for Elon's deportation. Why not both?" Rating: As U.S. President Donald Trump and tech billionaire and Tesla CEO Elon Musk engaged in a war of words over social media in early June 2025, many people online attributed a quote to Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-VT. According to a Reddit post, Sanders allegedly said: "Elon is calling for Trump's impeachment. MAGA is calling for Elon's deportation. Why not both?" (Reddit user u/Pumuckl4Life) Even though he has been a critic of Trump and Musk, Sanders never said the above words. We found no evidence in his publicized statements, in the news media or on his social media accounts to corroborate the claim. As such, we rate this claim as an incorrect attribution. We reached out to Sanders for comment on whether he made the above statement. A spokesperson from his office denied the above claim. We also looked for examples of Sander's comments to the media by searching for segments of the above quote on Google News. If Sanders had said this in public it would have been widely covered by news media publications. We also found no similar statements on Sander's Senate website or his social media accounts. However, on June 5, the Facebook group U.S. Democratic Socialists did post the statement without attributing it to anyone. Sanders has used similar language. In a June 6 post from his official campaign account on X. Sanders criticized both Trump and Musk by using their arguments to bolster his point: Trump's right: The easiest way to save money is to eliminate the "Billions and Billions" in corporate welfare Elon Musk has received. Musk's right: Trump's "Big, Beautiful Bill" is a "disgusting abomination" that must be defeated. Let's do both. It'll be a win-win for America! Sanders was referring to Trump's threats to cut off federal subsidies and contracts with Musk's companies, which could cost Musk billions of dollars. He also was referring to Trump's tax and spending bill, which Musk called a "disgusting abomination" on X. Since Trump's inauguration, Sanders has been traveling the country on a "Fighting Oligarchy Tour" looking to build up resistance to the Trump administration. While Sanders did not advocate for Musk's deportation, in February 2020, he did vote to convict Trump in the Senate impeachment trial during his first administration. He also voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial in 2021. Meanwhile in June 2025, Steve Bannon, a former aide to Trump, called for an investigation into Musk's immigration status: "They should initiate a formal investigation of his immigration status, because I am of the strong belief that he is an illegal alien, and he should be deported from the country immediately." Yuengling beer expands to Michigan starting Aug. 11

It's the moment Michigan beer lovers have been waiting for — and no, you're not being punked this time. Yuengling, America's oldest brewery, is officially coming to the Great Lakes state this summer. Eastown Distributors, based in northeast Wayne County and one of the companies selected to distribute the beer in Michigan, confirmed the news on Friday, June 6. "Beer drinkers in the state of Michigan have been anticipating this for years," an Eastown Distributors spokesperson told the Free Press. Detroit is among the cities where Yuengling will be available, starting on Aug. 11. A full list of locations and availability dates across the state has yet to be announced. D.G. Yuengling & Son Inc. was founded in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, in 1829 by David G. Yuengling. It remains family-owned. The company has flirted with expanding to Michigan before, fueling hopes and sparking rumors that never quite panned out. That history made some long-skeptical Michiganders cautious even as the news broke out. More: Ferndale Project, brewery known for experimenting, to distribute its beers statewide "Hard to believe that it may happen after all the teasing that has happened over the years," one person wrote in the 'Bring Yuengling to Michigan' Facebook group on June 5. "I sure hope this is true," another person commented. Nour Rahal is a trending and breaking news reporter. Email her: nrahal@ Follow her on Twitter @nrahal1.
