Narberth restaurant named among UK's best by national awards
The National Restaurant Awards took place on Monday (June 9), celebrating "the brilliance and vibrancy of the UK restaurant scene, honouring the best chefs and operators across the country".
Awards handed out at the annual event included:
National Restaurant of the Year
Gastropub of the Year
Chef of the Year
Cocktail List of the Year
Wine List of the Year
Opening of the Year
Best Restaurant in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (four individual awards)
A list of the UK's top 100 restaurants was also revealed, featuring one Pembrokeshire restaurant - Annwn.
The best restaurants in the UK
The best restaurants in the UK, according to the National Restaurant Awards, are:
Why Annwn is among the UK's best restaurants
Annwn was ranked the 68th best restaurant in the country at the National Restaurant Awards.
The Narberth-based restaurant describes itself as "a Welsh food movement" that pays homage to its Welsh surroundings and landscapes.
It was recommended by the National Restaurant Awards for its "hyper-local food with a sustainable conscience".
The Awards website explains: "Chef-patron Matt Powell serves a single 10-course menu that changes during the seasons using ingredients that are not only local to the area, including many that are foraged close by - often within walking distance of the restaurant - but those that support sustainable producers and the country's wild ecosystems.
"A meal at Annwn starts with a selection of snacks, that might include bread 'cooked on the planc' and seasonal offerings such as cured and air-dried meats before getting to the heart of the matter with a procession of dishes that celebrate Pembrokeshire's bounty and which feature some unusual and not often used ingredients.
"Plating is meticulous, with dishes served on a wide variety of crockery and items from the natural world to accentuate the restaurant's natural approach.
"By contrast, the dining room is less formal than the food's presentation might suggest, with wooden tables and chairs, dark slate flooring, and vintage furniture creating a rustic but comfortable space in tune with its surroundings."
Previous dishes at Annwn have included:
Kilpaison oyster with purée, estuary plants, and an oyster cracker
A broth of velvet swimmer crab, St Brides prawns, sea buckthorn emulsification, sea radish and (nicer than it sounds) scurvy grass
Mallard accompanied by damson Paste, hazelnuts, and preserved hogweed seeds
Customers agree Annwn is "one of the best in the world"
It's not just the experts who love Annwn, but customers as well, with it boasting a perfect 5 rating on Tripadvisor from 46 reviews.
It has been described by visitors as a "culinary gem", "one of the best in the world" and a "beacon worth travelling a long way" for.
Have you visited Annwn before? (Image: Tripadvisor) One person, commenting about their experience at Annwn, said: "Top 3 restaurant in the world for a special experience.

Last call for Pendine Young Musician of Wales competition
Entries are now open for the second Pendine Young Musician of Wales competition, taking place during the 2025 North Wales International Music Festival at St Asaph Cathedral from September 11 to 20. The competition is open to instrumentalists and singers aged under 21 as of January 1 this year, who are either born or living in Wales, or Welsh nationals living abroad. Professor Paul Mealor, royal composer and co-founder of the competition, said: "It's not too late for young musicians to enter the competition – there's still a few weeks left. "We've already had a load of entries but we want to make sure we reach out to rising stars in every corner of Wales. "If there's any young instrumentalists or vocalists who want to have a chance to win thousands of pounds in prize money and to perform live on BBC Radio Cymru, they need to get their skates on." The competition is funded by the festival's headline sponsor, Pendine Park, through the Pendine Arts and Community Trust. The winner will receive the silver Pendine Trophy and a £2,000 cash prize. The judging panel includes Professor Helena Gaunt, principal of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama; internationally acclaimed soprano Rebecca Evans CBE; and Alun Jones, the festival's executive vice-chair and former principal of Chetham's School of Music. Mario Kreft MBE, co-founder of the competition alongside Professor Mealor, said: "After the success of the inaugural competition last year, we're really excited about the prospects for the 2025 contest. "Our aim is to encourage and foster young, emerging talent and the Pendine Young Musician of Wales competition has all the makings of a very prestigious event. "I think in years to come it will be one of the premier competitions for young musicians and will hopefully assist them and propel them in their careers. "From our perspective it totally fits in with our ethos as an inclusive, inter-generational care group." To enter, applicants must upload a video or audio performance and complete an application form by the deadline of 5pm on Friday, July 4. If under 18, entrants must have permission from a parent or teacher. Submissions will be judged anonymously, and selected candidates will be invited to perform a 10-minute programme in the semi-final. Four will advance to the final round. More information and entry forms are available on the festival website at Tickets for the North Wales International Music Festival 2025 went on sale today Thursday, June 12.

Families have a fantastic fun weekend at Drayton Manor thanks to Wishaw's DreamMaker Foundation
Nine children travelled with their families travelled by coach down to the Midlands Children from Lanarkshire were part of a group who enjoyed a fantastic fun trip to a theme park in the Midlands thanks to the Les Hoey MBE DreamMaker Foundation. Nine children and their families travelled by coach to Drayton Manor Theme Park and Zoo in Tamworth on a summer trip for the weekend and had a magical couple of days, courtesy of the Wishaw-based charity. There were four DreamMaker children accompanied by their siblings and parents, two of the families were from Larkhall, with the others from Glasgow and Ayr. The Les Hoey MBE DreamMaker Foundation helps children with life-threatening illnesses, many of whom are going through gruelling treatments, to enjoy experiences such as days out and weekends away, and to meet celebrities. Charity Manager Angela Cook said: 'We left on Friday morning and had fun on the coach on the journey down with games and prizes and even DreamMakers Got Talent. 'After checking into the on-site Hotel, we spent all day Saturday in Drayton Manor Theme Park where the families had a ball enjoying all the activities and rides. 'We set a competition for the best photo with our wee Mr Wiz mascot and they all joined in, some of the photos were hilarious. 'On Saturday night we had a private room reserved where we had a DreamMaker party, where the real Mr Wiz and Les played games and competitions and we all ate pizza.' The families enjoyed another couple of hours in the theme park on Sunday before heading back home, happy. The charity covered all the costs for the trip, including coach, hotel, food, theme park and zoo entry and provided the kids with spending money. Angela added: 'This was one of the best trips I have ever been on. It was pure joy from start to finish. I want to thank all the DreamMaker Families for joining in the fun and games and making it so special for all the kids. 'Thanks to everyone who donated crisps, sweets, and juice for our goody bags, and to every one who donates into our buckets when we are out collecting. 'This is where your money goes and we couldn't do it with out your support.' The charity is already planning its next trip to the theme park. *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire.
