What is happening to the people of Gaza is 'despicable and unconscionable,' Tánaiste Simon Harris has said, as Israeli announced a new 'intensive' invasion of the enclave.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that a new offensive in Gaza will be an intensive military operation aimed at defeating Hamas, but stopped short of detailing just how much of the enclave's territory would be seized.
"Population will be moved, for its own protection," Netanyahu said in a video posted on X. He said Israeli soldiers won't go into Gaza, launch raids and then retreat. "The intention is the opposite of that," he said.
The new offensive on Gaza, could see the IDF seize the entire enclave.
In a statement on the matter, Mr Harris called for Israel to reverse course.
"The reports of a planned extension of military operations by Israeli forces in Gaza are alarming.
'Such a move would result in further deaths, casualties and untold suffering for the Palestinian population who already face a dire humanitarian situation.
'I strongly urge the Israeli authorities to exercise restraint.
'What is happening to the people of Gaza is despicable and unconscionable.
"This is a humanitarian catastrophe.
'We need to see an immediate cessation of hostilities, release of remaining hostages and the resumption of humanitarian aid at scale into Gaza,' Mr Harris said.

The new invasion includes a new plan for aid distribution though supplies will not be let in yet, according to Israeli officials.
Two Israeli officials said the plan also includes the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to southern Gaza. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing military plans.
The statement came as Israeli ministers today agreed to ramp up the war against Hamas in Gaza, with plans to capture more territory in the beleaguered Palestinian enclave and call up tens of thousands of reserve soldiers.
The plan, which the official said would be gradual, could mark a significant escalation in the fighting in Gaza, which resumed in mid-March after Israel and Hamas failed to agree on an extension to an eight-week truce.
Israel's military chief of staff, Lt Gen Eyal Zamir, said the army was calling up tens of thousands of reserve soldiers and said Israel would 'operate in additional areas' in Gaza and continue to strike militant infrastructure.

Israel already controls roughly half of Gaza's territory, including a buffer zone along the border with Israel as well as three corridors that run east to west along the strip. These have squeezed war-weary Palestinians into ever shrinking wedges of land in the devastated territory.
For weeks, Israel has been trying to increase pressure on the militant Hamas group and prompt it to show more flexibility in negotiations.
In early March, Israel halted the entry of aid into Gaza - a ban that is ongoing and which has plunged the territory of 2.3 million people into what is believed to be the worst humanitarian crisis of the war. Hunger has been widespread, and shortages have set off looting.
On March 18, Israel resumed strikes in the territory, killing more than 2,600 people in the weeks since, many of them women and children, according to local health officials.
The previous ceasefire was meant to lead the sides to negotiate an end to the war, but that end goal has been a repeated sticking point in talks between Israel and Hamas.

Israel says it will not agree to end the war until Hamas is defeated. Hamas meanwhile has demanded an agreement that winds down the war.
The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages. Israel says 59 captives remain in Gaza, although about 35 are believed to be dead.
Israel's offensive has killed more than 52,000 people in Gaza, many of them women and children, according to Palestinian health officials, who do not distinguish between combatants and civilians in their count.
The fighting has displaced more than 90pcof Gaza's population, often multiple times.

Trinity College Dublin cuts ties with Israeli organisations

The governing body of Trinity College Dublin has voted to cease links with Israeli organisations with immediate effect. It means that TCD will not sign up to future exchange or research agreements with Israeli institutions, no longer use Israeli suppliers and divest from Israeli companies. Current research partnerships and contracts will be honoured but not renewed. The move follows recommendations from a taskforce which was established as part of an agreement to end the student Gaza solidarity encampment on the university campus in May 2024. It called for TCD to divest fully from all Israeli companies, no longer use Israeli suppliers and refuse to enter any new education of research collaborations with Israeli organisations. It also recommended that TCD join with other universities to push for an end to EU research collaboration with Israel. The taskforce was made up of 26 members including students, staff unions and senior leadership, and was chaired by former High Court president Mary Irvine. It met 14 times this year. The governing body voted to accept all of the group's recommendations after receiving its report. Academia for Palestine TCD welcomed the "historic decision" and described it "as an important step towards rejecting the normalisation of Israel's decades-long occupation, apartheid, ethnic cleansing and genocide against the people of Palestine". TCD is engaged in a number of EU-funded research consortia which include Israeli partners. The taskforce recommended that the university should not submit for approval or agree to participate in any new institutional research agreements involving Israel. It also called on TCD not to enter into any further mobility agreements with Israeli universities or new commercial relationships with Israeli entities. The university has two Erasmus+ exchange agreements with Israeli universities – one which will end this year, the other next year. Participation in these programmes has been on an inbound basis since September 2023. TCD has no current supply contracts with Israeli companies and will not enter into future supply deals with Israeli firms. The university has also already divested from Israeli companies on the UN blacklist but will fully divest from all companies headquartered in Israel. In a note to staff, Chairperson of the Board Paul Farrell said that "based on the strength of the evidence shared, and in line with the principles and procedures developed by the taskforce, the Board has accepted the recommendations set out in the report regarding institutional links with the State of Israel, Israeli universities and companies headquartered in Israel". These will be enacted for the duration of the ongoing violations of international and humanitarian law" and "will be kept under review by the Board," he said.

Bono's son Elijah Hewson says it 'shouldn't be controversial' to stand up for children in Gaza

More info Bono's son Elijah Hewson has said "it shouldn't be controversial" to stand up for the rights of children "being bombed" in Gaza. The second youngest son of the U2 rock star and his wife Ali Hewson was performing with his band Inhaler at St Anne's Park on Friday night. Speaking to the crowd, Eli said: "It shouldn't be controversial to stand up for the rights of kids that are being bombed in Gaza. "We stand with the people of Palestine tonight. Any kids that are being murdered for the sake of any ideology is wrong." Crowds cheered as the band then continued to perform. It comes in the wake of Belfast rappers Kneecap's advocacy for Palestine came under intense scrutiny after they used a performance at the Coachella festival in California last month to denounce Israeli attacks on Gaza. A video emerged from a November 2023 gig appearing to show one of the trio saying: "The only good Tory is a dead Tory." Last month, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, 27, was charged by the Metropolitan Police after the incident on 21 November 2024 at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town, London. Mr Ó hAnnaidh, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, 18 June. In a statement posted on social media, Kneecap previously said: "We deny this 'offence' and will vehemently defend ourselves. "This is political policing. This is a carnival of distraction. 14,000 babies are about to die of starvation in Gaza, with food sent by the world sitting on the other side of a wall, and once again the British establishment is focused on us."
