St. Paul police name detective, officer, employee of the year

St. Paul's police chief on Thursday named a homicide investigator as Detective of the Year and a patrol officer who regularly recovers firearms and large amounts of drugs as Officer of the Year. Sgt. Jennifer O'Donnell, a St. Paul officer of more than 30 years who works in the homicide/robbery unit, was the primary investigator on 156 homicides, robberies and aggravated assaults last year and assisted on more, according to her commendation. She was the primary investigator in the fatal shooting of Nicholas Sletten, 42, in the North End in October. Murder charges were filed in January. 'This was a complex investigation that required ongoing intensive work,' said O'Donnell's commendation, which described her and her colleagues as working 'tirelessly' on the case. Chief Axel Henry named Abdirahman Dahir as 2024 Officer of the Year. He grew up in St. Paul, became a Police Explorer at age 14, and later a St. Paul parking enforcement officer before he joined the department's police academy in 2021. A patrol officer in the Western District, Dahir recovered 22 handguns, of which 3 were stolen and one a 'ghost gun,' and several thousand fentanyl pills during 18 stops last year that were either traffic or investigative, his commendation said, adding that last year 'was not an anomaly.' Dahir recovered 30 handguns the year before. Richard Bertholf, who works in the police Video Management Unit, was recognized as Professional Employee of the Year. When Andre L. Mitchell, 26, was shot and killed while two children were in his backseat in November, Bertholf 'immediately responded to multiple urgent requests to gather nearby video that may have captured the shooting,' his commendation said. He found videos that showed four people shooting at Mitchell and two suspect vehicles, and gathered information about suspects. Four people have been charged in Mitchell's murder. Sacha Jenkins, Filmmaker Who Mined the Black Experience, Dies at 53

Sacha Jenkins, a fiery journalist and documentary filmmaker who strove to tell the story of Black American culture from within, whether in incisive prose explorations of rap and graffiti art or in screen meditations on Louis Armstrong, the Wu-Tang Clan or Rick James, died on May 23 at his home in the Inwood section of Manhattan. He was 53. The death was confirmed by his wife, the journalist and filmmaker Raquel Cepeda-Jenkins, who said the cause was complications of multiple system atrophy, a neurodegenerative disorder. Whatever the medium — zines, documentaries, satirical television shows — Mr. Jenkins was unflinching on the topic of race as he sought to reflect the depths and nuances of the Black experience as only Black Americans understood it. He was 'an embodiment of 'for us, by us,'' the journalist Stereo Williams wrote in a recent appreciation on Okayplayer, a music and culture site. 'He was one of hip-hop's greatest journalistic voices because he didn't just write about the art: He lived it.' And he lived it from early on. Mr. Jenkins, raised primarily in the Astoria section of Queens, was a graffiti artist as a youth, and sought to bring an insider's perspective to the culture surrounding it with his zine Graphic Scenes X-Plicit Language, which he started at 16. He later co-founded Beat-Down newspaper, which covered hip-hop; and the feisty and irreverent magazine Ego Trip, which billed itself as 'the arrogant voice of musical truth.' Want all of The Times? Magic launch new era with throwback-style jerseys for 2025-26 season

The post Magic launch new era with throwback-style jerseys for 2025-26 season appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Orlando Magic officially unveiled a new logo and three redesigned uniforms on Tuesday as part of a rebranding initiative ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season. With rising stars Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner leading the way, the updates blend modern design with classic elements, reinforcing the franchise's identity while honoring its roots. Advertisement In a press release, the Magic announced the return of a fan-favorite franchise symbol: the star. The redesigned primary logo reintroduces the iconic star motif, which now features a 'new-look' cascading trail. The letter 'A' in both 'Orlando' and 'Magic' has also been replaced with a star, giving the updated wordmark a nostalgic yet refreshed look. The team's traditional color palette — Magic blue, Magic black and Magic silver — remains unchanged. 'The new logo fondly revisits the Magic's history making an iconic and fan-favorite franchise symbol 'the star' once again,' the team said in its statement. 'The logo evolves with a nod towards nostalgia featuring a legendary, star-centric logo displaying a 'reach for the stars' mentality to match the team's championship ideals.' The secondary logo now shows a star behind a basketball in motion, intended to reflect the franchise's forward momentum and continued growth since its founding in 1989. Magic unveil throwback-inspired uniforms with bold pinstripes and star accents Alongside the updated branding, the team revealed three new uniforms for the upcoming season: the Association (white), Icon (blue) and Statement (black) editions. The uniforms are described as 'modern classics' that pay homage to the team's most iconic looks while ushering in a new era of Magic basketball. Advertisement 'The three new uniforms… have evolved into modern classics, honoring the rich history of the Magic's most iconic jerseys while ushering in a new era of Orlando Magic basketball,' the team said. 'With the return of the bold pinstripes, the MAGIC and ORLANDO wordmarks, uniform trim and bold star on the shorts… the uniforms are a nostalgic tribute to a favorite of the Magic's fanbase.' The Statement edition stands out as the only Jordan Brand uniform in the lineup. It draws direct inspiration from the team's original on-court warm-up jackets and includes bold pinstripes and the new star icon prominently featured on the shorts. Magic rebrand reflects championship aspirations and fan-driven vision Magic Executive Vice President of Marketing and Social Responsibility Shelly Wilkes emphasized the connection between the new designs and the franchise's long-term goals. Advertisement 'The Orlando Magic's mission is to be world champions on and off the court,' Wilkes said. 'The logo and uniforms are an extension of that mission and a direct reflection of the excellence our organization strives for from our ownership to our staff, coaches and players.' Wilkes also noted the role of fan feedback in shaping the rebrand. 'Based on fan feedback, the new logo was a collaboration and really a labor of love… This logo and new uniforms signify the beginning of a new era of excellence for the Magic while paying homage to the past.' The rebrand was celebrated during a special event at Kia Center on Tuesday and will continue with a fan showcase later in the day. As the Magic gear up for a pivotal offseason, the organization appears poised to shift into 'win-now' mode. With Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner anchoring a promising young core, Orlando holds the No. 16 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, set for June 25–26 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The draft begins at 8:00 p.m. ET and will air on ABC and ESPN.
