Can AI help Indigenous communities preserve their cultures?
Social Sharing
Indigenous communities are thinking about possibilities and concerns for how AI can help them preserve and pass on their languages and their cultures.
Today on Commotion, host Elamin Abdelmahmoud is joined by Indigenous artists Marek Tyler and Susan Blight to discuss how AI could integrate Indigenous values and provide knowledge for future generations.
We've included some highlights below, edited for length and clarity. For the full discussion, listen and follow Commotion with Elamin Abdelmahmoud on your favourite podcast player.

Elamin: Marek, talk to me a little about the most promising aspect of what AI could do for Indigenous communities.
Marek: One of the most promising aspects, in my opinion, for AI is the potential to support Indigenous self-determination by enabling data systems that reflect our values and our languages and our governance practices. Now, OK, how? Well, when ethically developed, I think an AI can manage and protect their cultural knowledge and facilitate collective decision-making, grounded in our worldview.
I think it's most important to remember that it's a tool to strengthen sovereignty, it's not just to boost efficiency. It depends entirely on who owns it, who controls the technology, who owns the infrastructure. So imagine 50 years from right now, Susan and I, our nieces' and nephews' generations coming, imagine them collaborating with their aunties and uncles who helped train that AI 50 years prior. Because their community took the responsibility to own their knowledge, to take care of the knowledge, to own the data, to care of infrastructure.
My thoughts are when — not if — Indigenous communities start training AI, we're not just going to feed it data. We're teaching it the principles of iyinisiwin [wisdom and knowledge]. We are teaching it to practice respect, humility, uphold our governance systems — all of those pieces so that it learns to learn like us, to think like us, to walk in our ways. So we decide who the helper is and how they're taught and what they're taught, and how the future generations are going to be served, not the other way around.
Elamin: Protecting the environment is a core belief for a lot of Indigenous communities. But one of the biggest concerns around AI technology is the environmental impact of so much energy, so much water, goes into maintaining large AI systems. Susan, what do you make of the risks and the benefits that come with bringing AI into Indigenous communities and thinking about using it in that way?
Susan: Yeah, I think it represents one of the main areas, or arenas, of contention as it pertains to Indigenous AI or Indigenous people using AI. And that has to do with the fact that any technology that we employ has to align with our values. And so the environmental impacts of AI not currently having a system to run it that is sustainable is something that a lot of Indigenous people are talking about. But this also goes to what Marek is talking about as well, which is how we introduce our concepts, our place-based ways of living and being, as well as frameworks that are sustainable and reciprocal, into AI. We are not going to rely on something that is not sustainable and that actually harms the environment and our non-human relations.

Why Reddit Stock Was Moving Higher This Week
Shares of Reddit (NYSE: RDDT) were moving higher this week after the company launched two new AI-powered advertising tools and benefited from some positive analyst commentary on the stock. According to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence, the stock was up 19.4% for the week as of Wednesday's close. Reddit gets a tailwind At the Cannes Lions festival, Reddit announced Reddit Community Intelligence, a new tool that can power insights for advertisers from more than 22 million posts on Reddit. As part of the launch, it introduced two new "early stage products," Reddit Insights and Conversation Summary Add-ons. Reddit Insights is a "scalable, AI-powered social listening tool" that gives marketers proprietary data to help guide ad campaigns. The Conversation Summary add-on integrates positive user content directly below an ad, helping to get ads better placement and views. Advertising is Reddit's primary source of revenue, but the company has historically struggled to monetize its platform the way some larger social media platforms have. On Wednesday, Reddit jumped 5.5% as B. Riley said that Meta's deal with Scale AI, in which it's spending $14.3 billion on a 49% stake in the data labeling company, was a positive sign for Reddit as point to the value of the content on its platform, which Reddit refers to as its "corpus." What's next for Reddit Reddit has been a big winner since its IPO last month, but the stock has also pulled back sharply from its peak as investors seem to be doubting whether the company can maintain its strong growth rate. The launch of the AI advertising tools is a step in the right direction, as anything it can do to maintain its momentum in both usage and advertising growth should help drive the social media stock higher. After deadly year on roads, Calgary explores using drones and VR for traffic safety
After reporting an 11-year high for collision fatalities last year, Calgary is turning to new technology in an attempt to make its roads safer. Calgary is the first Canadian city to test drones and virtual reality to monitor traffic in real time. The city has purchased around seven drones to monitor traffic, and allow city staff to understand how crowd patterns are forming and whether officers are needed to control traffic. Operators at the city's traffic management centre are also piloting a virtual reality headset to keep an eye on congestion at intersections, and adjust traffic signals in real time. It's currently being tested at Macleod Trail and 42nd Avenue S.W. These new tools come after 29 people died in collisions in 2024, including 13 pedestrians. "I'm really hopeful and optimistic that we can alleviate some of the pressure on traffic, and maybe calm drivers down to some degree so that we're not experiencing the same amount of collisions that we have seen in the past — in particular the collisions between vehicles and pedestrians where lives were lost," said Mayor Jyoti Gondek. Aside from safety, Gondek said the city's goal is to use these tools to make road travel faster and more predictable. The VR headset was tested during the recent G7 leaders' summit in Kananaskis, Alta., when thousands of people from across the world were travelling through Calgary. Gondek said it was a success. "We had a lot of motorcades passing through and so we had to accommodate those, but very quickly the teams at the traffic management centre were able to reset the signals to allow for full flow of traffic again," she said. The city plans to expand the VR program to up to 15 more locations next year, said Ravi Seera, Calgary's acting director of mobility. Seera said it cost the city roughly $10,000 to bring the VR headsets online, adding that each drone costs "less than $1,000." But he said these tools should save the city money in the long run. "The whole intention behind the pilot is we want to make sure there is value behind the investment. So we are looking at low-cost, high-value investments," said Seera. Faster Google Maps updates Calgary has also landed a partnership with Google to make it the first city in the world to upload images directly to Google Street View. Gondek said that means Calgarians will get faster updates and more accurate information on Google Maps. City staff is also exploring partnerships with similar platforms like Apple Maps. "On average, it takes Google about two to three years to update their maps. We're enabling them to do it within about six months," said Gondek. Similar to Toronto, the City of Calgary is also partnering with Waze, a popular navigation app. "Calgary has created a two-way data connection with Waze, which gives drivers and the city access to live traffic updates on closures and detours, and it helps drivers to report any incidents and delays that they may be witnessing in real time," said Gondek. In addition, the city is using artificial intelligence for traffic counting. City staff are also looking into ways AI can help to prevent potholes or cracks in roads. "What we expect is in a few years, that would replace our manual data collection and inspection of our roadways. It will give us information about which roads need to be paved," said Seera. Gondek said the city has robust safety protocols in place to ensure all data is protected.

Why Nintendo Stock Surged Today
Nintendo (OTC: NTDOY) stock saw another day of big gains in Wednesday's trading. The company's share price gained 6.1% in the daily session and is now up 56.5% across 2025. Nintendo's gains today were driven by indications that demand for its recently released Switch 2 gaming console remains quite high. The Switch 2 quickly became the fastest-selling gaming platform in history following its release earlier this month, and the new system is powering a strong rally for Nintendo stock. Switch 2 continues to push Nintendo stock higher Nintendo released its Switch 2 platform on June 5, and the new console has gotten off to a fantastic start. The console, which launched at a $449 price point, sold more than 1.1 million units in the U.S. within its first week on store shelves. The performance was good enough to make it the most successful video game platform launch in history. On a worldwide basis, the Switch 2 managed to sell 3.5 million units in just four days -- a performance that also set a new sales record. Now, new shipments from Nintendo mean that retailers are restocking the red-hot console -- and reports suggest that the platform is continuing to quickly sell out. What's next for Nintendo? Nintendo appears to have a big hit on its hands with the Switch 2. Unlike some other console launches, the company did a commendable job ensuring that it had a lot of units produced -- but demand still appears to be significantly exceeding supply at some point. While there is some risk for investors that front-loaded demand for the new console may not provide a great indicator as to the platform's long-term performance outlook, the launch has clearly gone very well.
