British Airways has launched a sale on flights and holidays, with savings to be had on destinations such as Dubai, Barbados and New York.
The UK airline and its holiday counterpart, British Airways Holidays, announced on Thursday, 1 May, that it has launched 'The Original Sale', offering savings on travel for 2025 and 2026 when booked before 20 May 2025.
British Airways is handing out deals on return flights, including trips to Antigua from £419, journeys to Dubai from £455 and the Maldives, which can be reached from £599.
If you are looking at exploring the US this year or the next, flights to New York will be on sale from £389, trips to the theme park capital Orlando also from the same price, or if the illuminating sights and bustling casinos of Las Vegas are calling your name, flights can be booked from £549.
It's not just standard tickets that are subject to deals in the sale, as British Airways customers can also enjoy up to £600 off return Club World (long-haul business class) flights across the US and beyond this summer.
Passengers who opt for Club World tickets will also have access to an airport lounge, a lie-flat bed, a three-course dining experience and priority check-in and boarding.
If your sights are set on a trip a little closer to home, the airline has also announced offers on its Club Europe (short-haul business class) flights, which include lounge access and a full meal and bar service onboard.
Club Europe members could see themselves jetting off to Ibiza from £368, Tenerife from £501 and Venice from £295.

The company says a week in St Lucia can be booked from £779pp in the sale, or a trip to Orlando from £569pp.

Investments in UK tech sector will create hundreds of jobs, says Government

Hundreds of jobs are set to be created across the UK as part of a raft of investments in the technology sector, the Government has announced. It comes as Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle told an audience at London Tech Week that the UK must be at 'the cutting edge' of rapidly growing technologies, such as AI. The technology sector is a key area of the Government's efforts to accelerate growth in the UK economy, in a bid to support efforts to increase spending. On Tuesday, a number of 'significant investments' in the sector were announced in areas including AI and fintech, which will see some companies setting up in the UK for the first time. Liquidity, a US-based AI fintech business, revealed it will launch its European headquarters in London as part of a plan to invest an additional £1.5 billion over the next five years. Meanwhile, Capgemini said it will expand UK operations with a new London headquarters. Netcompany, a Danish IT consultancy, will also invest £2 million to expand its Leeds office and is launching a new site in Edinburgh, which will ultimately create 150 jobs. Other investments include InnovX AI, a major European start-up hub, investing £14.7 million in a new London technology site, creating 30 jobs. Mr Kyle said: 'We have all seen over the last few years, just how rapidly and profoundly technologies like AI are transforming the economy, and our society. 'Britain can – and must – be at the cutting edge of this change. 'The era of hesitancy is over: we can be the masters of our fate, and through the measures I am announcing today, we will harness the vast potential of our trillion-pound tech sector to help remake our country for the better.' The Government said on Tuesday that it was opening its Science and Technology Venture Capital Fellowship for a second cohort and round of applications, to increase the capacity of the UK financial sector to invest in start-up businesses in the sector. Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said: 'Securing valuable high-tech investment is an integral mission of this government and seeing global investors put billions in the UK economy shows the plan for change is working, with more and more companies choosing Britain. 'With tech being identified as a key growth sector in our upcoming modern industrial strategy, we're not only helping attract and secure investment, but delivering long-term, stable growth that supports skilled jobs and raises living standards across the UK.'

BBC travel expert Simon Reeve says this is the best city in the world blending history and culture

BBC travel presenter Simon Reeve has explored more than 130 countries during his career, and now he has named his favourite city in the world. BBC explorer Simon Reeve has named a city straddling the East and West as his favourite destination worldwide. He expressed his profound connection to a place where, he feels, history and culture can be felt in the air. Having travelled to more than 130 countries, Simon recently wrapped up his latest journey, 'Scandinavia with Simon Reeve' – a breathtaking three-part series for the BBC, reports the Mirror. ‌ Now, he has revealed his most cherished city. His selection is based on a sprawling metropolis that bridges the European and Asian continents and is home to what he describes as "one of the most stunning buildings on the planet". ‌ Speaking to The Express, he said: "In terms of a city, I think Istanbul is not just spectacular, but you can't go there and not smell the history and the culture there. You know, I love how it's clearly divided. You've got your old bit. You've got your modern bit. You've got your Eastern area, as well - the other side of the Bosphorus, Asia, basically. It is the point where, for a thousand years and more, the East and the West have met." He also shared his "favourite little quirky thing" about the city, which is Hagia Sophia – the ancient basilica turned mosque that stands as a testament to history at 1,600 years old. Simon elaborated on how this emblematic monument continues to captivate visitors as a magnificent structure that remains an active site of worship. He shared: "I'll tell you my favourite little quirky thing actually, in many a way; there's a building in Istanbul called Hagia Sophia, which was a church, then a mosque, is now sort of a museum, just open as an attraction." ‌ Simon went on to say: "But it's an incredible building - one of the most stunning buildings on the planet, and up at the top, inside on the upper balcony, there's a bit of graffiti carved into the balcony." He was referring to ancient Viking runes inscribed into the Hagia Sophia during its tenure as a church. The National Museum of Denmark has identified the Viking visitors as Halvdan and Are. ‌ According to Atlas Obscura, the inscription likely reads "Halfdan carved these runes" or "Halfdan was here", a detail that Simon found particularly captivating, dubbing it his "favourite little bit". For the presenter, uncovering the story of the rune-carving Vikings was a "chill down the spine moment", underscoring that people have been explorers since the dawn of humanity. He noted that throughout history, humans have always felt compelled to leave their mark and connect with these "incredible sights". He concluded: "It's just a reminder that our ancestors travelled, and they were quite similar to us, actually. They probably wanted a beer, a selfie, and to leave a little bit of a mark behind." All three episodes of Scandinavia with Simon Reeve are available for streaming on BBC iPlayer NOW.

Gorgeous Greek island is 'best place to avoid crowds' in Europe during summer

Symi is a hidden gem known for its brightly coloured harbour, historical architecture and turquoise waters - making it a must-visit for anyone looking for a holiday away from the crowds If you're seeking a seaside holiday this summer and wish to dodge the tourist crowds, consider venturing to one of Greece's lesser-known islands renowned for its stunning landscapes. Symi, a small island near Turkey's coast, is famed for its vibrant harbour featuring rainbow-coloured homes set against green hills. The island boasts well-preserved historical architecture, a tranquil ambiance, and numerous beaches encircled by crystal-clear turquoise waters, making it an idyllic holiday destination. In 2024, travel expert Sarah Kingdom from Travel Awaits named this charming island as the top European destination for those wanting to avoid crowded places. ‌ READ MORE: 'I'm a fashion writer and found an unlikely retailer selling glitzy festival-ready outfits' She stated: "Fortunately, there are so many Greek islands that it's relatively easy to find one free from crowds. Tucked between Rhodes and Kos, Symi is a world away from those tourist hotspots.", reports the Express. ‌ "Accessible only by ferry, you'll arrive at one of the prettiest harbours in the world, with stunning pastel houses sprawling up the hillside." Symi is a tiny island composed of two towns, with Gialos being the main port at the waterfront's base while Chorio, perched higher on the hilltops, offers breathtaking views to all who visit. Upon arrival in Symi, most visitors are likely to be found snapping photos of the picturesque Gialos harbour, but there's plenty more to explore including local tavernas, bakeries and shops for those feeling peckish after their journey. For history buffs, a visit to the museum and stunning church in Gialos is a must, while boat taxis offer guided tours and snorkelling opportunities for the more adventurous. The bus service to Chorio is convenient, but for the daring, the historic Kali Strata stairs - a bright blue staircase originally built for the island's wealthy inhabitants - offers a unique way to explore the island. ‌ Climbing the roughly 500 steps of the Kali Strata may sound daunting, but with plenty of spots to rest and grab a refreshing drink, it's an hour well spent. Symi boasts several stunning beaches, from bustling spots complete with taverns, bars, restaurants and sunbed hire, to secluded coves perfect for a peaceful day out. For a breathtaking view of the sunset, head to the ruins of a Byzantine castle, constructed by the Knights of Saint John in the 14th century, which provides a panoramic view of the harbour. ‌ Pontikokastro, with its ancient tomb and windmill ruins set against a backdrop of lush pine forests, offers hikers stunning views of the island's natural splendour. Symi remains an undiscovered jewel compared to its bustling Cycladic neighbours, promising tranquil beach holidays for those in the know. A Tripadvisor user gushed: "Absolutely excellent place. A proper Greek feel to it. A million miles from the hassle and bustle of Rhodes even though it is only a 50-minute (fast ferry) ride away." Another enchanted visitor shared: "Symi was is very picturesque and my camera was working overtime. It is quiet and peaceful and the local shopkeepers are so friendly and don't force their goods on you. A cold beer and lunch looking out onto the harbour was idyllic."
