Prof Dr Adib Rizvi, founder of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), has received the British Medical Journal (BMJ) award for his outstanding contribution to medical sciences in South Asia.
The award, conferred during a ceremony in New Delhi, was accepted on Dr Rizvi's behalf by Dr Sanjay Nagra, co-chair of the BMJ Advisor Board.
Dr Nagra praised Dr Rizvi's efforts in establishing a healthcare system offering free, accessible, and equitable treatment in Pakistan, calling it a model for developing nations.
Addressing the audience via Zoom, Dr Rizvi expressed gratitude for the honour and commended BMJ's role in promoting medical education and research.
He urged countries in the region to look beyond political differences for the betterment of marginalised communities and improved public health outcomes.
Dr Adib Rizvi is a distinguished Pakistani transplant surgeon, humanitarian, and the founder of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT). His pioneering efforts have significantly transformed Pakistan's healthcare landscape, particularly in the fields of urology and organ transplantation.
In 1970, Dr. Rizvi initiated an eight-bed urology ward at Karachi's Civil Hospital, which laid the foundation for SIUT. Over the years, SIUT has evolved into South Asia's largest urology, nephrology, and transplant center, offering comprehensive services entirely free of cost.
The institute now treats over a million patients annually, providing services such as dialysis, lithotripsy, oncology treatments, and organ transplants.
Dr. Rizvi has been a staunch advocate for ethical medical practices. He played a pivotal role in the enactment of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act in 2010, which legalised cadaveric organ donation and curtailed the unethical organ trade in Pakistan . His efforts have been instrumental in normalizing organ transplantation in the country.

Safer, smarter healthcare services: Federal, Punjab Health ministries to launch joint initiatives
ISLAMABAD: The Federal Health Ministry and the Punjab Health department have decided to join hands for stronger, safer, and smarter healthcare services. The major development for national health collaboration came here on Thursday during a high-level meeting between Federal Minister for Health Mustafa Kamal and Punjab Minister for Primary and Secondary Healthcare Khawaja Imran Nazir. The meeting focused on strengthening coordination between the federal and provincial governments to address critical healthcare challenges and launch joint initiatives across key health areas. The meeting decided taking joint action against counterfeit medicines, coordinated efforts on polio eradication and dengue prevention and advancement of digital health systems and regulatory reform. The meeting was also attended by Special Secretary Health Syed Waqarul Hassan, Additional Secretary Health, Chief Information Officer of DRAP, Director General Health, and the President of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC),Dr Rizwan Taj. Kamal reiterated the federal government's resolve to address healthcare issues with urgency. He stated that under the direction of the prime minister, particular focus is being placed on eliminating polio and ensuring timely implementation of health programmes. 'The fight against polio continues with full zeal, until the virus is eliminated, our children remain at risk,' he emphasised. He shared plans for a new national strategy for polio eradication and urged parents to disregard negative propaganda and ensure their children are vaccinated. 'In Palestine, even during war, mothers call for vaccinators with whistles. Pakistani mothers must also play their part in protecting their children,' he said. Kamal highlighted steps being taken by DRAP to combat counterfeit medicines, including the rollout of a modern barcode system. This will enable every medicine to carry a unique code that patients can scan to verify authenticity and price. Additionally, export certifications such as GMP, CoPP, and NOCs are now being processed online via the Pakistan Single Window, and all regulatory submissions are handled through the new 'e-App' online platform. Provincial Minister Khawaja Imran Nazir reaffirmed Punjab's full support for the federal government's health agenda. 'Punjab has greater capacity and resources, and we are ready to share these to benefit all provinces. The health of our people must come before all else,' he stated. He also praised DRAP's initiatives under the leadership of Minister Kamal, particularly, those targeting counterfeit pharmaceuticals. The two ministers agreed on the importance of coordinated measures to prevent dengue outbreaks in Islamabad and Rawalpindi and committed to united efforts in disease prevention, vaccination campaigns, and health system strengthening. Govt vows full support for pharma sector, announces export issues desk
Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan on Wednesday reaffirmed the government commitment to boosting pharmaceutical exports, announcing the establishment of an empowered Pharma Export Promotion Council, PharmEx Pakistan, under the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, according to a ministry statement. The minister's remarks came during a presentation by Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Association (PPMA) Chairman Touqeer ul Haq, who briefed him on the formation of Pharmax Pakistan, a public-private initiative to promote and manage pharmaceutical exports, the Commerce Ministry said. 'The pharmaceutical sector has huge export potential, and PharmEx Pakistan is just one or two steps away from becoming operational,' the minister said. He appreciated the industry's rapid progress and assured continued government facilitation to achieve global export targets. Centralised fund: pharma sector urges govt to let it utilise 1% of profit on in-house R&D activities On trade with Afghanistan, he stated, 'With every passing day, our relations are growing stronger and more streamlined – pharmaceutical exports will rise accordingly.' Chairman Touqeer ul Haq praised the minister's prompt action in addressing critical issues, stating it helped the industry avoid major financial losses. He added that Pharmax Pakistan has the potential to raise pharmaceutical exports from USD 700 million to USD 3 billion. The initiative builds on strong sectoral growth, with exports rising from USD 270 million in 2020–21 to USD 355 million in 2024–25, as noted in the latest industry figures. Pharma bodies decry being ignored by SCQB Touqeer ul Haq also called for better facilitation of exports to Afghanistan, a key market, and welcomed the minister's assurance of focused policy coordination. Pharmax Pakistan is expected to serve as a dedicated platform to enhance regulatory compliance, market access, and international outreach for Pakistani pharmaceutical products. The minister assured the association of the Ministry's commitment to resolve the issues faced by the exporters and announced the establishment of a dedicated Exporter Facilitation Desk in the Ministry to help the export industry with critical matters requiring urgent intervention of the Government.
