Woman, 30, Killed In Air India Plane Crash Was Flying To London For Husband's Birthday

Harpreet Singh (30), a resident of Indore was among the 241 passengers of the ill-fated Air India flight AI-171 that crashed in Ahmedabad on Thursday. Harpreet Singh was going to celebrate her husband Roby Singh Hora's birthday, in London on June 16.
Roby Singh Hora is a software engineer in London and Harpreet was also an engineer, and she was working in a software company in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
Her father-in-law Harjeet Singh Hora told IANS on Friday, "Harpreet had booked a flight ticket from Ahmedabad to London. She had planned to celebrate my son's birthday on June 16. She often used to visit him, but this time, this unfortunate incident occurred and now she is gone forever."
Rajendra Singh Hora, another relative of Harpreet revealed that she was allotted seat number 22 E on the Boeing Dreamliner that crashed within 38 seconds after take-off, resulting in the death of 241 people on board and many others on the ground.
"Roby and Harpreet had got married in 2020, but they had no child. Earlier, Harpreet was also with Roby in London, but she lost her job there a few years ago, and had joined a software company in Bengaluru," Rajendra Singh told IANS.
A few family members have reached Ahmedabad to receive Harpreet's body.
When asked, if they had got the remains, Rajendra Singh said, "Not yet".
Meanwhile, family members and relatives have gathered at Harpreet's ancestral home in Indore.
The plane had crashed shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon.
Apart from the 241 people aboard the ill-fated aircraft who perished in the crash, many innocent people on the ground were feared killed as the Boeing plane crashed into a residential building and mess of BJ Medical College and burst into a ball of flames, triggering an immediate emergency response.
The flight was heavily fuelled for the long-haul journey, adding to the intensity of the explosion and fire that followed the crash.
Senior BJP leader and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was going to meet his daughter in London, also died in the crash. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves across the world.

New PCMC initiative to rank housing societies that promote eco-friendly living in Pimpri Chinchwad
Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has rolled out a citywide programme to encourage housing societies to adopt sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The stated aim of the 'Green Society Initiative' is to rate and reward societies based on their performance across multiple areas — waste segregation, in-house composting, solar energy adoption, rainwater harvesting and wastewater recycling. Under the programme, societies would receive a 'green star' rating for each criterion they meet. A senior PCMC official said the initiative would not only promote sustainability but also help the corporation compile comprehensive data on environmentally conscious housing societies. "This data would enable us to support these societies in various ways and strengthen decentralised sustainability efforts across the city," he said. Municipal commissioner Shekhar Singh said the initiative is aimed at empowering communities to become green ambassadors. "Every society has the potential to significantly reduce its environmental impact. Through 'green star' ratings, we aim to celebrate those who lead the way and inspire others to follow," he said. "Societies that fulfil all criteria would be honoured by the civic body." The civic body would implement the programme in phases, beginning with awareness sessions, followed by registrations, training, and on-ground assessments. Deputy commissioner Sachin Pawar, who is leading the initiative, said, "This programme provides a framework for societies to turn intent into action. It is expected to create a culture of environmental responsibility, driven not just by policy — but by the people themselves." The parameters include systematic separation of wet and dry waste at the source, managing organic waste within society premises, use of rooftop solar systems for common area electricity needs, capturing and storing rainwater to reduce water scarcity, and recycling grey water for gardening or other uses. However, environmental experts have stressed the importance of setting up a continuous monitoring mechanism, as many societies reportedly initiate green projects to qualify for benefits but later fail to maintain them. "Without regular audits or follow-ups, there's a risk that these practices might become symbolic rather than impactful," one expert said. 90,487 FYJC students confirm admission
Pune: A total of 90,487 students have confirmed their admissions of 1,13,048 applications for FYJC admissions under three quotas (minority, in-house and management), data with the office of the state director of secondary and higher secondary education showed on Saturday. For the first time, Maharashtra is conducting Std XI admissions through a centralized online system. Over 9,400 junior colleges have registered, offering 21.23 lakh seats. Of these, 22.55 lakh seats are under various quotas. This year, 12.71 lakh students have registered for the admissions. Quota admissions are held before round one of the centralised admission process. This year, students were given time from June 12 to 14 to confirm their admissions under the different quotas. The in-house quota received 52,468 applications, of which 26,521 students confirmed their admissions, while the management quota received 23,589 applications, of which 7,756 students confirmed admissions. The minority quota received 36,991 applications, of which 26,210 students confirmed their admissions across the state.
