NAMM 2025: The NAMM show where music's big gear manufacturers wheel out their big guns for the year ahead and, of course, Roland is never one to miss the opportunity to launch a major new keyboard line.
In our video above, we caught up with David Ahlund, Roland's global synth product specialist to find out more about their new performance-focused V-Stage line. So where does V-Stage fit in with Roland's already burgeoning synth line up, we wondered?
'It's basically an all-in-one gig rig but it has a complete focus on keyboard sounds, so that means organ, acoustic piano, electric piano. We do have a synthesizer section as well but the main focus is keyboard sounds with a dedicated section for each. It's also designed to be very quick to operate, to set up your scenes and your patches,' Ahlund explained.
Of course, by now Roland have got their synth development and technology back-end thoroughly fettled with all of their current instruments featuring their Zen Core engine, a shared technology both able to accurately emulate their classic synths and be the backbone for future-focused synth developments.
It's the power behind the Jupiter, Juno, JX and SH emulations on board their Fantom, Jupiter and Juno hardware keyboards, and is also what drives the plug-ins (both old and new) within their Roland Cloud digital service.
It comes as no surprise therefore to find that the new V-Stage has Zen Core inside too.
'It does have the Zen Core sounds but that's not the focus,' corrects Ahlund. 'The focus is the organ, acoustic piano and the EP which have different technologies. The organ and acoustic piano are all modelled and the EP is a new, we call it 'enhanced supernatural' with brand new samples of tine EPs, reed EPs.'
And there's Roland's V-Piano tech on board, the digitally modeled infinitely variable piano that offers precise control of every parameter from frame size to degree of lid opening. 'Because it's modeled you can really tweak the piano and make very detailed adjustments to it,' says Ahlund.
So who is the new V-Stage – available in both 76 and 88-note piano-weighted versions – aimed at?
'It's largely aimed at professional players who mainly focus on keyboard sounds. Like if you're in a soul-funk band, or a church band... the synthesizer is still there if you want a nice pad layer on the acoustic piano,' explains Ahlund.
And, having got hands-on with both new keyboards we can testify as to their quality of build and road-worthiness – right down to those cheeky Nord Stage-emulating wooden red end panels…
V-Stage will be available this Spring priced at $3,500 for the 76-note version and $3,999 for the piano-weighted 88.

Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite variant rumored to have 50% more CPU cores — New chip with 18 cores and 64GB RAM is reportedly already in testing

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. A seasoned tech tipster has stated that Qualcomm is testing Snapdragon X2 Elite devices in configurations with 64GB of RAM. Roland Quandt, best known for his exclusives published via Germany's stated this weekend that the 'SC8480XP aka SD X2 Elite [is] in testing with 64GB RAM.' He is also more convinced than ever that this upcoming Oryon V3 CPU architecture chip will come packing 18 cores. PC enthusiasts are hopeful that Qualcomm has learnt some lessons from its initial Snapdragon X Elite venture. It had a lot of help from Microsoft to spearhead Copilot PCs using the first Oryon architecture processors last June. However, interest in them fell sharply as AMD and Intel responded rather swiftly with their own power-sipping but potent AI/NPU-enhanced laptop processors. The last time we heard murmurings about the touted SC8480XP was back in March. At the time, we highlighted that 18 cores would increase the CPU core count by 50% vs the first-gen Snapdragon X Elite. Moreover, the newer architecture is expected to deliver its own performance boost. Rumors also point to the Snapdragon X2 Elite looking to push into the desktop side of the market, or even servers. This notion comes from chatter about Qualcomm testing chips like the SC8480XP with advanced cooling solutions, including a 120mm radiator toting AiO. That would mark quite an intergenerational change. Moving on to other SoC specs, like onboard RAM, the last we heard, the SC8480XP was being tested in Qualcomm SiP (system in package) format with 48GB RAM on board, as well as a 1TB SSD storage on board. Now it looks like options with up to 64GB of RAM on board may be offered. Quandt was at Computex 2025 and kept a keen eye on Qualcomm developments during the show. If his leaked info didn't come via a Qualcomm contact, perhaps a device partner talked about upcoming SC8480XP configurations behind closed doors somewhere in Taipei. Whatever the source, please add a touch of salt to these leaks until we hear directly from Qualcomm or a device partner. Since we've sailed by Computex without any official Snapdragon X2 Elite, or what might be called Snapdragon X2 Ultra Premium, news, we are most likely looking at the Snapdragon Summit 2025, in September, for Qualcomm to take the wraps off its next-gen processors. We will also hopefully see designs that Qualcomm's partners have come up with to sell these Windows-on-Arm devices to us. Gibson brings back its wild Les Paul acoustic hybrid for the first time in more than 20 years

There's no doubt that the Gibson Les Paul is one of the most iconic electric guitars ever produced, but does it work as an acoustic guitar? That's a question Gibson is clearly keen to answer with the launch of the Les Paul Parlor. It's likely to divide fans (similar to how Fender's Acoustasonic range split opinion) but it's certainly an interesting concept. Gibson is approaching cautiously here. Unlike its previous Les Paul acoustic iterations – which came in 1969 and 2000 for three and four-year runs, respectively – the body shape is a lot smaller this time around. Featuring a parlor-sized body 'reminiscent of a scaled-down SJ-200', its compactness may just sway those on the fence about this hybrid aesthetic. Taking tonewood cues from the source material, its back and sides are crafted with solid mahogany, and there's a AAA flame maple top for 'a bit of bite and note definition to the warm tone from the mahogany body'. The bookmatched top also benefits from traditional scalloped X-bracing with single-ply cream binding found all over to ensure the Les Paul's legendary chic carries across. Mahogany is also employed for the neck, which has a notable Advanced Response profile. Expect a neck that's not 'too beefy nor too slim', while its 12"-radius, 19-fret fingerboard is made from rosewood. Pearloid trapezoid inlays harmonize with the guitar's cream binding (and continues the LP vibe, naturally) and the neck attaches to the body with a compound dovetail neck-to-body joint. Rosewood returns for the bridge, which is installed in a belly-down orientation. TUSQ is the material of choice for its nut and saddle, and its Grover Rotomatic tuners are nickel-plated. Another hint of the parlor's electric lineage comes via the mother-of-pearl Gibson logo and gold Les Paul Model decal on the headstock. And, seeing as it's part of the LP family, it would be remiss not to saddle this thing up with some pickups. An L.R. Baggs VTC +4 under-saddle piezo pickup and active preamp are the electronics of choice here. As the system's name implies, this model has an output 4dB hotter than the standard VTC system. Still, we can't imagine this guitar is going to be hooked up to a Marshall stack. There are two finish options available, Vintage Sunburst and Vintage Cherry Sunburst, and both are available as left-handed models too. The Gibson Les Paul Parlor is priced at $3,999 and comes with a hardshell case. Head to Gibson to oggle it some more. Gibson has been evolving its acoustic range in 2025, with top picks including a new Acoustic Specials series that brings its most beloved (and expensive) designs to lower price points, a downsized, single-cut take on the SJ-200 via the Parlor Rosewood EC, and a signature, twist-laden take on the J-45 for Margo Price.
