Mid-range Range Rover Sport HSE shows why it is the one to have

Despite the "not a true Range Rover" label continuing to be placed on it by purists, the Sport's ongoing popularity suggests otherwise.

The current third generation, or internally named L461, Range Rover Sport has been on-sale locally since 2023, a year after its world reveal, but in that time, has received more revisions than ordinarily found four years into a vehicle's lifespan.
Wait? Did we miss something?
From an improved infotainment system two years ago to a new Ingenium turbodiesel engine the year after, the Sport's most recent update came in March this year with the arrival of the SV Edition Two that now uses the BMW-sourced 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8.
A year prior to the SV, the first special edition version, the Stelath, made local landfall as mainly an appearance package modelled on the Dynamic SE that opens the Sport range up.

Given how most JLR products take their time to reach media fleets, the arrival of a Charente Grey Sport for the weeklong stay had The Citizen Motoring team perplexed.
For one, the range favourite D350 had already been sampled twice, first by editor Jaco van der Merwe soon after its market arrival and then last year by yours truly as part of the infotainment upgrade.

Jaco's Santorini Black example used the Dynamic HSE as a base, while the Eiger Grey version I ended up with was the flagship Autobiography.
Hello again, D350
On first glance, and given the bevy of plug-in hybrid Defenders and Range Rover Evoques that arrived before and after the Sport, it was assumed that the new P460e, which premiered at the same time as the new infotainment system, had been given for testing.
As it turned out, this wasn't the case, and neither was the dropped-off model the Stealth or even the SV. Instead, a quick look underneath the windscreen wiper where JLR places its trim level designations came with a sense of déjà vu.
While the engine was indeed the 3.0-litre Ingenium straight-six turbodiesel that produces 350 pferdestarke (PS), hence the D350 moniker, which equates to 257kW/700Nm, the trim grade – again – read Dynamic HSE.
The step down from the Autobiography, the HSE presented somewhat of a challenge as, apart from having already been sampled, taking it to Gerotek wouldn't have been worth it as the former had already fulfilled that role.
Renewed look at HSE
For the fear of 'copying-and-pasting' Jaco's findings, the weeklong stay with what has now become a Range Rover Sport familiarity still impressed in the environment where it will spend the majority of its life, the urban jungle.
Compared to the Autobiography, the tested HSE keeps the option of the gloss Narvik Black roof, but swaps the optional 23-inch gloss black alloys for the silver 22-inch wheels.

Also missing was the optional black styling package and, in place of the black brake calipers, the Brembo-supplied stoppers finished in a more appealing red.
While more discreet and not as over-the-top as the Autobiography that had, admittedly, been specified with nearly every optional extra available, the HSE lacks for little in presence despite the stigma of it still not being the 'proper' full-size Range Rover that has followed the Sport ever since the original's world unveiling in 2005.
As mentioned, the rear-end styling won't find favour among everyone considering the 'cleaner' and more simplified look of the previous generations.
Right, that interior
Tugging the pop-out door handles came with the biggest and most contentious surprise, the colour of the Ebony Windsor leather upholstery.
Called Caraway/Ebony, the saddle tan hue looks out of place and while different from the traditional black, grey, white or even red, won't be to everyone's preference and will likely require lots of attention to keep clean over time.
The same applies to the piano key black inlays around the toggle switch gear lever and starter button on a centre console, which remains a point of contention, as the latter could have been relocated aft of the steering wheel or on the dashboard to better optimise storage space.

That being said, hiding spaces aren't found lacking as, apart from the cubby in front of the gear lever that also houses the wireless smartphone charging pad, sliding back the lid of the cupholders reveals a deeper storage area underneath.
Capping it off, the HSE gets a pair of individual armrests for each of the front seats, plus a refrigerated centre console glovebox.
Ergonomically, the interior adheres to the minimalistic design approach in which the majority of the functions are located within the infotainment system.

In the case of the HSE, this means the upgraded 13.3-inch Pivi Pro system.
Although still easy to fathom despite appearing the complete opposite, certain buyers will still bemoan the lack of physical buttons or even dials for the quad-zone climate control.
The workings of the system, besides this, are intuitive, while the touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel, as mentioned on the Autobiography, didn't annoy as much as on other products.
Still tech packed and practical
Compared to the HSE is anything but spartan on the equipment front with the inclusion of the customisable 13.7-inch instrument cluster, a heated steering wheel with electric adjustment, a panoramic sunroof and Adaptive Cruise Control.
Further items consist of heated, ventilated and massaging front electric seats, a surround-view camera system, Head-Up Display and, admittedly from the options list, the ear-pleasing 29-speaker, 1 430-watt Meridian sound system.

Only blemished, no pun intended, by the choice of colour and piano black inserts, fit-and-finish remains difficult to fault – especially the Kvadrat textile material on the doors – as does practicality.
Despite the 60/40 split folding electric rear seat being a touch on the slow side when folding compared to doing the process manually, total boot space increases from 647-litres to 1 491-litres.

As a result of the test unit being fitted with the adaptive air suspension system, the rear apron can be lowered using the toggle switches integrated into the side of the boot walls to aid loading heavy items.
In addition, the cabin, up front and at the rear, isn't found lacking in space, with the mentioned glass roof making no ingress on headroom for rear-seat occupants.
On the road
As has become the norm with JLR's D350 badged models, the Ingenium straight-six, which lacks the electrified 48-volt mild-hybrid system offered in Europe, pulls smoothly from low-down, but when provoked, easily lifts the Sport's nose with a surge of muscled grunt.
All the while accompanied by an aurally pleasing straight-six soundtrack and nearly faultless eight-speed automatic gearbox, the unit shows its hand, unsurprisingly, the most in Dynamic mode, however, the quickfire punch soon stops the higher the tachometer goes.
In either Auto or Comfort modes – the supposed efficiency-focused Eco not being selected at all – the Sport becomes comfortable and, thanks to the lower profile tyres, with a slightly better ride quality than the Autobiography.
That being said, and while equipped with the Terrain Response 2 system incorporating low range, locking differential and seven off-road modes – Auto, Comfort, Grass/Gravel, Mud Ruts, Sand, Rock Crawl and Wade – taking the Sport off-road never crossed minds for fear of scratching the wheels or even worse.

A decision the majority of owners will likely adhere to as well, the HSE's on-road demeanour ultimately counts.
In this regard, and besides the adept ride, engine and road noise is found lacking thanks to what JLR calls Active Noise Cancellation technology, while the steering is quick and with relatively good feedback for a vehicle of this type.
On the consumption front, the HSE recorded an indicated best figure of 10.3 L/100 km over its seven-day and 496 km spell, 1.8 L/100 km heavier than the Autobiography, but still commendable for a package weighing 2 315 kg.
Conclusion
The phrase 'all the car you will ever' is a more than well used description when summarising a vehicle that often sits on top of its respective model range.
In the case of the Range Rover Sport D350 Dynamic HSE, the saying is anything but as the mid-range D350, arguably, makes the biggest case for being the most complete offering above Autobiography, the fire-breathing P530 petrol, the SV and the contentious P460e.

At R2 526 600 before options, the HSE is still anything but a bargain and unlikely to shake off the adage of not being a 'real Range Rover' by brand purists.
However, it simply is the Sport to have and, to quote the earlier statement, 'all the model you will ever need'.

The Ineos Grenadier has been around for a while but it still turns heads. Image: Supplied The Ineos Grenadier has been with us for a while now but it still turns heads wherever it goes, especially in the off-road community and more so among those that have a soft spot for the original Land Rover Defender. How did it come about? We know that billionaire and chairperson of multi-national chemical company, Ineos, Sir Jim Ratcliff, expressed an interest in buying the tooling for the Defender when JLR stopped production, which they declined in no uncertain terms. So he and a couple of mates, while sipping on some beers at the Grenadier pub in London, drew a rough design of what he wanted on a napkin and from there the Grenadier was born. That napkin is now framed and has pride of place in the pub. He has spent a good few billion dollars in the process but he's built one of the most rugged and capable 4x4s on the market. We were fortunate enough to be at the launch in Scotland in 2022 and it's taken a while to get behind the wheel on local soil, but when we did, it was the Trailmaster, aimed at the more serious off-roader. The original brief was to create a vehicle that's durable, reliable and has extremely capable off-road abilities. The team then set about sourcing components from the world's best including BMW for the engines, ZF for gearboxes, Magna Steyr for design and engineering, Bosch, Tremec for the transfer case and the Carraro Group for the car's live axles. Next Stay Close ✕ Exterior With a combination of Defender and Mercedes G-Wagon looks, the Grenadier sports no sleek SUV lines or pretty curves, it's a statement rather than a suggestion of adventure. With mounting attachments fixed to the doors, grab handles in the roof and pre-wired plugs for lights and other outside accessories, the Trailmaster really is trail ready. That's also underscored by the old-fashioned short stick on the floor to shift between 4h, 4L and central diff-lock and the buttons mounted in the roof to activate the front and rear diff-locks. The Ineos Grenadier is purpose built to go anywhere. Image: Supplied Interior There's also something very satisfying about climbing into the Grenadier. We've become so used to smooth and minimalistic digital interiors with enormous screens that seeing an interior that's littered with switches and toggles is a delight for analogue affectionados. It looks a bit like a helicopter's interior which adds an extra bit of swagger. It also means that there's less wiring and fewer motherboards to go wrong or that things can be MacGyvered in the bush, should there be a problem. They were designed to be operated with gloves on so there's plenty of space and no likelihood of pressing the wrong button. The volume and temperature control buttons did feel a little flimsy but I haven't picked up any issues on any of the Grenadier owners forums. As you would expect, the seating position in the super-comfortable Recaro seats is commanding, providing a clear view of things ahead including cyclists. To disperse the lycra-clad crowds there is a red 'toot' button on the steering wheel that has a softer sound than the regular hooter. There's also no traditional instrument cluster, only a screen with warning lights. Speedometer, revs, fuel gauge and the rest of the driving information is displayed on the central infotainment touchscreen. It's crisp and clear and responds quickly to inputs and it's filled with useful information like consumption, system readouts, a compass with an altimeter and also its own GPS system, called Pathfinder. Because it has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, digital maps and apps like Waze can still be used. There's ample space for rear passengers and the rear load bin has a hardy floor and handy rings to keep things tied in place. Image: Supplied Driving the Ineos Grenadier The Trailmaster we had on test was the diesel version fitted with BMW's 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine with 182kW and 550Nm coupled to said eight-speed ZF gearbox powering all four corners. The software has been tweaked and calibrated to provide grunt lower down in the rev-range for optimal off-road driving. Not that it's a complete slouch on the black stuff but its forte is off the beaten track, as you would understand. The turning circle is very wide so you won't be slipping into tight parking bays easily and there's no return to centre once you're maneuvering, which requires you to manhandle the steering wheel. The steering is light, though, with not much feedback as a result of its traditional rack-and-pinion set-up but I had no problem with it and certainly it doesn't warrant any gripes. Talking of gripes, I've watched and read a few reviews and customer comments of the right-hand drive versions with its large bulge in the footwell. One even said that it was the only reason he wouldn't buy it. Sure, it is prominent, but you quickly get used to it and adjust your position accordingly, and compared to say, the old Defender and even the new Toyota Land Cruiser 79, it's positively luxurious. It hustles along nicely and, for me at least, the big BF Goodridge all terrain tyres provided a soft reassuring hum through the well insulated cabin and I could easily spend hours in it. Taking it off-road But Sir Jim didn't design the Grenadier exclusively for its on-road prowess so there will always be a compromise, especially with a ladder-frame chassis. For the off-road anoraks the numbers make for interesting reading. It has a Eibach coil springs five-link front and rear suspension setup, solid front axle, 264mm of ground clearance, a wading depth of 800mm, a 35.5-degree approach angle, a 36.1-degree departure angle and a 28.2-degree breakover angle. There's decent underbody protection and the side-steps won't bend or become crinkle-cut when tackling axle twisters. We had planned to do one of the more challenging 4x4 trails in Gauteng on a Sunday, but unfortunately in the morning the dark clouds poured relentlessly. It hardly relented throughout the day so I ended up playing around at an abandoned quarry close to where I stay the next day. The rains had made a muddy bog of it but the Grenadier coped admirably as I tried to avoid the worst of the deep soft mud. There was no need to activate the front diff-lock but in low range up a slippery rock incline with the rear one engaged, it climbed like a mountain goat. In fact, on a few other attempts I deliberately chose various incorrect lines with the same result. I had called a mate to tell him of my plans and that he may have to do a recovery in his 200 Land Cruiser, but my only discussion with him was that I was on the way for a cup of hot chocolate. the Ineos Grenadier has every off-road addition you would ever need. As most people know, the BMW 325i (Gusheshe) is usually the star of the show when it comes to spinning, and for those who appreciate the meticulousness and skill required to execute flawless drifts, this is a must-watch. Coming to Mzansi Magic, the 'Gush'Lyf' promises to deliver adrenaline-fuelled action, showcasing the lives and skills of four expert drivers, including Gift Zulu (Ngozi), Nalo Dzhivhuho (Dankie Darlie aka Queen of Smoke), Mpho Dirolo (Poroza) and Collie Golden (Mzet aka Moruti), as they push the limits of speed and agility. With its sleek design and powerful engine, this classic model is a favourite among car enthusiasts and spinners. In 2024, the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, revealed that he aims to make spinning one of the 'biggest sports' in South Africa. 'There is one promise I'm going to make ... spinning and stance (car customisation) is not a crime. I'm so excited, because I promised that spinning will be recognised and I'm going to make spinning one of the biggest sports in this country,' he said. Spinning originated in the township of Soweto in the late 1980s and was performed by gangsters at funerals to honour the deceased. It is now a recognised motorsport where people gather at race tracks around the country, where they watch car spinning take place. 'Gush'lyf' is set to premiere on Thursday, August 7, on Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 161) at 8pm.

Now two months into its time as the Leisure Wheels long-term test vehicle, the seven-seat, ladder-frame SUV has been tasked with more city driving than open-road exploration, and it has responded with grace. Cederberg trails to urban daily duties When we received the Everest Sport to test, we had a solid month of driving lined up, including an Easter weekend in the Cederberg. The Sport variant hits a sweet spot for adventure-minded buyers who are happy to forgo the luxury trimmings of the Wildtrak or Platinum, but still want serious off-road capability. While the Sport doesn't include Ford's '4A' automatic all-wheel-drive mode (available in the higher-spec trims), it does offer selectable four-wheel high and low modes via the rotary dial next to the gear shifter. An electronic rear differential adds confidence for trickier trails. We've yet to take the Everest Sport into technical 4×4 territory, but the gravel roads of the Cederberg proved a good test of its light off-road ability and comfort. Fully loaded with passengers and camping gear, the SUV handled the terrain with ease. The suspension absorbed dirt road imperfections well, and the light all-terrain tyres delivered stable performance over corrugations and loose gravel. Related: Ford Everest Sport 4×4: Long Termer Introduction – Leisure Wheels Real-World Fuel Consumption One of the 2025 Everest Sport's highlights remains its drivetrain: the smooth, 10-speed automatic paired with Ford's familiar 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel. Last month, fuel consumption averaged 9.2L/100km. This month, largely limited to short city trips and uphill commutes in Cape Town, we're sitting at 10.8L/100km. While that's up, it's still respectable for a vehicle of this size and weight. Ford claims a combined fuel economy of 7.5L/100km, which we'll aim to test more accurately with some longer highway trips scheduled next month. Refined, Understated Design Two months in, I remain a fan of the Everest Sport's appearance. Finished in Aluminium Metallic with subtle black 'Sport' detailing, it strikes a clean yet assertive look. If you want to stand out a bit more, 'Blue Lightning' is the boldest option in an otherwise grey, black, white, and bronze-inspired colour palette. Three Highlights of the Ford Everest Sport 4×4 Even beyond the capable drivetrain and composed ride, there are a few standout details that make this SUV a strong daily driver. Quick-Access Lane Departure Control Being able to turn off the lane-departure prevention with a quick double click of one's left thumb on the steering wheel is such a pleasure. Many vehicles have overly-aggressive lane-assist safety features, which you have to dig around in the central infotainment system or digital display behind the steering wheel to turn off. Being able to do it on the fly is a massive bonus. Refinement and Responsiveness The sport's well-tuned suspension and responsive drivetrain make it an awesome daily driver, and it transfers this on-road elegance to off-road conditions too. Along with the drivetrain, the pedals are responsive and well-balanced, never lagging on acceleration nor too sensitive in stopping. The steering remains composed and precise for a vehicle of nearly five meters long. Well-Mannered Safety Features While some modern SUVs overwhelm drivers with overly sensitive warnings and interventions, the Everest Sport's safety features are intuitive and restrained.
