No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka not interested in best-of-five-set matches in women's tennis

LONDON (AP) — Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka says she wouldn't want women's tennis to move to best-of-five-set matches at Grand Slam tournaments — like the men play — fearing higher injury risks.
'Probably physically I'm one of the strongest ones, so maybe it would benefit me. But I think I'm not ready to play five sets,' Sabalenka said following her two-set first-round victory at Wimbledon on Monday.
'I think it's too much on the woman's body. I think we're not ready for this amount of tennis. I think it would increase the amount of injuries. So I think this is not something I would consider.'
There's no widespread movement for the change, but it's an occasional talking point — if women's tennis should move to best of five at the later stages of the major tournaments.
Sabalenka was asked about the French Open final in which Carlos Alcaraz beat Jannik Sinner in a five-setter that lasted 5 1/2 hours.
'For someone watching, it's amazing to see five hours of great tennis,' Sabalenka said. 'But I'm not really jealous to stay there for five hours as a player. I don't know how many days they needed to recover after that crazy match.'

No. 2-ranked Coco Gauff expressed similar sentiments about best of five sets on Saturday.
'It would favor me just from a physicality standpoint. But I do think it would kind of be a big change for the tour. I think it would be fine just keeping it like how it is,' the American said.
Sabalenka beat 194th-ranked Carson Branstine 6-1, 7-5 in 73 minutes on Monday.

Putellas ready to lead Spain at Euro 2025 after injury sidelined her in 2022

MADRID (AP) — Alexia Putellas doesn't have fond memories of the last Women's European Championship, when she tore a knee ligament on the eve of the tournament in England three years ago. Things are different now as Spain prepares for its campaign at Euro 2025 in Switzerland, with Putellas saying she's better than ever and ready to try to lead Spain to its first title in the competition. 'I'm not going to lie, it's a competition that I had in my sights after the injury I suffered just before the start of the last Euro,' she said. 'I've been preparing for this moment for a long time and I want to enjoy it.' The two-time world player of the year was coming off one of her most impressive seasons when she injured her left knee during a practice session just days before Spain's opener at Euro 2022. It kept her out of action for nearly a year and dealt a blow to Spain's chances in the tournament, where it was ousted by England in the quarterfinals. Putellas says she has improved a lot since then, even though other Spanish players such as Aitana Bonmatí — a two-time Ballon d'Or winner herself — have emerged as top stars. 'Without a doubt I'm a better Alexia,' she said. 'I know myself a lot better, I know my qualities, I know what I have been working on. In the end, all the suffering makes you evolve as a person and as an athlete. I've learned to manage the bad moments a lot better, as well as the good moments.' Putellas has had another outstanding season and is again among the favorites for the world player of the year award. She thrived as Barcelona won the domestic treble and reached another Champions League final. 'The individual award is not something too important for me,' the 31-year-old Putellas said. 'But it would show that you've done something good and, from where I'm coming from — from the lowest of the lowest after the injury — it would give some value to the effort that it was put into the recovery. We'll see, but the most important thing is to win the Euro.' Bonmatí won the last two world player of the year awards, and she is now the one enduring an ordeal as after falling ill with viral meningitis just a few days before Spain traveled to Switzerland for the tournament. Bonmatí was released from the hospital on Sunday to rejoin the national squad, but it still wasn't clear how much she would participate. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Spain will open its tournament Thursday against Portugal. It will also face Belgium and Italy in Group B. The nation's best result in the European tournament was a semifinals appearance in 1997. Spain established itself as one of the powerhouses in women's soccer by winning the World Cup in 2023 and the inaugural Women's Nations League in 2024. It then just missed out on a medal at the Paris Olympics, when it lost to Brazil in the semifinals and to Germany in the bronze-medal match. 'It's never easy to win a Euro,' Putellas said. 'We need to have maximum respect toward the other nations. There are great teams participating. But we have a lot of faith in our team, and if we give our best we will be that much closer to winning.' ___ AP soccer:

Al Hilal stuns Manchester City 4-3 in Club World Cup on Marcos Leonardo's extra-time goal

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Marcos Leonardo scored his second goal on a rebound in the 112th minute, and Al Hilal stunned Manchester City 4-3 on Monday night, eliminating the Premier League power from the Club World Cup in the round of 16. In a back-and-forth thriller at Camping World Stadium, the Saudi Arabian club took the lead three times, including twice in extra time. Kalidou Koulibaly put Al Hilal ahead 3-2 in the 94th minute, but Phil Foden — who entered as a substitute four minutes earlier — equalized in the 104th. Leonardo finally put Man City away. Goalkeeper Ederson saved a header by Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from inside the penalty box and the ball deflected to Leonardo, who redirected it with his right foot as he fell to the pitch near the left post. Al Hilal moves on to face Fluminense of Brazil, which took down another European power, Inter Milan, earlier Tuesday. Leonardo also scored in the 46th minute to even the match at 1-1. Bernardo Silvan opened the scoring in the ninth minute for Man City. Malcom put Al Hilal ahead in the 52nd, and Erling Haaland found the net in the 55th to make it 2-2. Manchester City nearly won it regulation in the final seconds of added time on a counterattack that was thwarted by a hard challenge. Referees did not call a penalty, and Man City coach Pep Guardiola ran onto the field to argue the decision after the whistle. Wheeler strikes out 10 as Phillies beat Padres

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Zack Wheeler struck out 10 in eight innings, Nick Castellanos homered and the Philadelphia Phillies won in Bryce Harper's return to the lineup, 4-0 over the San Diego Padres on Monday night. Harper was hit by a pitch on the left foot, walked and lined into an unassisted double play as part of a 0-for-2 night in his first game since June 5. Harper returned from a nearly month-long layoff with right wrist inflammation to start at first base and bat third. Wheeler (8-3) tossed six-hit ball and did not walk a batter in another sterling outing for the NL East leaders. Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill did his part to keep the game from getting totally out of hand in the third when he reached well over the wall in straightaway center and robbed Max Kepler of a three-run homer. The rest of the game was all Philadelphia. PIRATES 7, CARDINALS 0 PITTSBURGH (AP) — Andrew Heaney carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and Spencer Horwitz powered Pittsburgh's offense as the Pirates cruised past St. Louis to match a season high with their fourth straight victory. Heaney (4-7) allowed three hits and struck out seven with one walk on 95 pitches through 6 2/3 innings. After a 71-minute rain delay, he walked Brendan Donovan to start the game before retiring the next 16 batters. Victor Scott II spoiled the no-hit bid with two outs in the sixth, lining the eighth pitch of his at-bat to left field for a single. Heaney, a 34-year-old left-hander, gave up a combined 14 runs and 15 hits in eight innings across his previous two starts. BLUE JAYS 5, YANKEES 4 TORONTO (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. broke a tie with a two-run single in the sixth inning and Toronto beat New York. Guerrero went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Ernie Clement had two hits and scored twice as the Blue Jays won for the fourth time in five games. Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a two-run homer and Cody Bellinger added a solo shot for the Yankees, who squandered a 3-1 lead. Toronto tied it on RBI singles by pinch-hitter Nathan Lukes and Clement in the sixth. Blue Jays outfielder George Springer exited after crashing headfirst into Chisholm's right leg trying to advance to third base on Guerrero's go-ahead hit off Jonathan Loáisiga. An inning earlier, Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham was removed because of a tight left hamstring. He was replaced by Jasson Domínguez. Making his second start since returning from injury, Max Scherzer allowed two runs and three hits in five innings for Toronto. He struck out seven and walked none. RED SOX 13, REDS 6 BOSTON (AP) — Wilyer Abreu hit a grand slam and an inside-the-park solo home run for Boston, Trevor Story hit a three-run homer in the first inning and the Red Sox defeated Cincinnati. Boston knocked Cincinnati phenom right-hander Chase Burns out of the game with a seven-run first inning during his second major league start. Jarren Duran went deep in the sixth with a solo shot for Boston, which won for the second time in nine games. Austin Hays had a two-run triple and solo homer for the Reds, who had won five of seven. Athletics 6, Rays 4 Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Shea Langeliers smashed a three-run homer in his first plate appearance since coming off the injured list, and Lawrence Butler broke a ninth-inning tie with a two-run triple that lifted the Athletics over Tampa Bay. The Athletics made two key defensive plays in the bottom of the eighth to keep it tied at 4. The Rays had runners on first and second with no outs when Junior Caminero hit a hard grounder to third, but Max Muncy stepped on the bag and threw to first for a double play. Josh Lowe then singled to left field but Colby Thomas threw a dart to home plate to get Brandon Lowe. Butler sent a shot to the wall in left-center field to score runners from second and third on his second triple of the season. Sean Newcomb (2-4) got the final out in the eighth, and Mason Miller worked a scoreless ninth to earn his 16th save.
