Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Proscovia Nabbanja to Showcase Uganda's Oil Investment Prospects at African Energy Week (AEW)

African Energy Week (AEW) 2025: Invest in African Energies has confirmed Proscovia Nabbanja, CEO of the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), as a distinguished speaker at this year's edition of the continent's premier energy investment event. Nabbanja stands at the helm of Uganda's oil and gas transformation, leading strategic efforts to drive national participation, fast-track infrastructure rollout and position Uganda as a competitive hydrocarbon exporter.
Under her leadership, UNOC plays a central role in unlocking the full potential of the Lake Albert Development Project – Uganda's flagship upstream venture – which remains on track for first oil by the end of 2025. As upstream activities led by TotalEnergies and CNOOC progress, Uganda is steadily advancing toward becoming a net oil producer, with an estimated 1.4 billion barrels of recoverable reserves.
Complementing these upstream developments is the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) – a 1,443-km heated pipeline that will transport Ugandan crude from Hoima to the Port of Tanga in Tanzania. Once completed, EACOP will be the longest of its kind in the world and a critical enabler of Uganda's oil export ambitions. While recent financing delays have posed short-term hurdles, EACOP remains a cornerstone project for regional integration and private sector participation in East Africa's energy future.
The strategic significance of Uganda's oil sector extends beyond national development. With EACOP connecting Uganda to international markets and the Lake Albert basin poised to anchor long-term production, the country is laying the groundwork for downstream growth, job creation and revenue generation. UNOC is also focused on building domestic refining and storage capacity, reinforcing energy security and creating a multiplier effect across the economy. For investors, this translates into wide-ranging opportunities not only not in crude oil production, but across logistics, infrastructure, services and skills development.
"Uganda is making bold moves to monetize its resources and become a key oil producer in East Africa. In partnership with major operators, UNOC is driving projects like Lake Albert and EACOP forward with clarity of vision and a strong national agenda. We are proud to welcome Proscovia Nabbanja to AEW 2025, where she will showcase how Uganda is open for business and ready to partner with global investors,' said Oré Onagbesan, Program Director for AEW.
At AEW 2025, Nabbanja will spotlight investment opportunities across Uganda's oil and gas value chain, including upstream field development, pipeline construction and local content initiatives. With UNOC actively seeking strategic and financial partners, her insights will be vital for investors looking to tap into one of Africa's most promising frontier markets.

UAE: First finfluencers hail new licence, say will reduce misinformation

Regulating financial advice given on social media will help reduce misinformation, UAE's first finfluencers said to Khaleej Times days after the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) licensed them. The region's first finfluencer license aims to regulate digital financial content. The initiative seeks to establish a governance framework for individuals offering investment analysis, recommendations, and financial promotions across digital platforms. On June 3, the SCA published its first list of 10 licensed finfluencers authorised to create financial content in the country. Many of these individuals come from backgrounds in banking, law, or finance, leveraging their expertise to educate the public and inspire informed financial decisions. Muhammad Alamer, one of the ten finfluencers listed by the SCA, noted that financial content in the UAE has significantly blossomed in recent years. 'In recent years, financial content in the UAE has matured significantly, driven by increased investor education, regulatory enhancements, and the growing presence of specialised professionals,' he stated, emphasising a shift toward prioritising quality over quantity, with a focus on credibility and actionable insights. On the SCA finfluencer license, Muhammad remarked that it would help reduce misinformation. 'This regulation will enhance trustworthiness, encourage professional standards, and ultimately benefit investors and the broader financial community,' he added. 'This regulatory initiative is expected to promote higher professionalism and mitigate misinformation, positively shaping the UAE's financial advisory landscape toward greater transparency and investor protection.' As a private wealth specialist, trader, and investor with 17 years of experience in UAE banks, his journey into financial advisory stemmed from a deep interest in understanding market dynamics and leveraging technology to enhance decision-making processes, particularly through advanced analytical tools and artificial intelligence. He works closely with ultra-high-net-worth individuals to grow and preserve their wealth, sharing insights through his LinkedIn platform. Mohammed Al Hattawi, another finfluencer listed by the SCA, entered the field of financial content out of passion. He emphasised the significance of the SCA's licensing decision, describing it as a crucial and timely measure that enhances credibility and ensures that those providing financial content are held to both legal and moral standards. 'The license boosts credibility, as it is issued by an official government agency, instilling greater confidence among followers. I appreciate the rigorous requirements for obtaining it, as they ensure that influencers are qualified and trustworthy.' He stated, 'I began my journey in financial content because of my lifelong passion for investing and my realisation that many people needed accurate information, free from misinformation.' The SCA's initiative aims to enhance transparency, trust, and regulation in the rapidly expanding world of financial content. 'My love for the field and my desire to be a trusted source of clear information motivated me to become a finfluencer,' he explained. 'As a financial influencer, my role extends beyond merely sharing information; I aim to inspire people to think critically about their financial decisions, basing them on understanding rather than emotion.' With a background in law and currently pursuing a PhD in Political Science and Economics, he observed that financial content in the UAE has evolved from basic concepts to a truly informed community. Industry experts have also welcomed this decision. While not a finfluencer himself, Ali Abuamriyeh, a Forensic Accounting & Financial Litigation Advisor, stated, 'The UAE's finfluencer license is a timely regulatory step that introduces structure, accountability, and transparency to the fast-growing digital financial content space, particularly in high-risk areas like cryptocurrency and speculative assets.' He believes this move aligns with the UAE's broader efforts to establish a resilient and well-regulated financial ecosystem. 'Similar to licensed investment advisors, finfluencers will now be required to meet clear standards. They must disclose their identity, credentials, affiliations, and the basis of their advice, ensuring that content is based on fact rather than hype or emotional persuasion.' From a forensic and litigation perspective, he highlights several key benefits: Transparency is enhanced through mandatory disclosures, providing a clearer view of a finfluencer's intentions and interests. Legal accountability is reinforced, as oversight from the SCA introduces an enforcement mechanism to deter irresponsible or deceptive advice. Additionally, licensing requirements create a digital audit trail, improving the quality and admissibility of content in legal investigations.

Adnoc Gas awards $5bn in contracts for Rich Gas Development project

Abu Dhabi's Adnoc Gas has awarded contracts worth $5 billion for a key project that is part of its major operational expansion and self-sufficiency strategy. The final investment decision is the first of three phases for the Rich Gas Development project, which is expected to boost the company's Ebitda by 40 per cent through 2029, Adnoc Gas said in a statement on Tuesday. Ebitda – or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation – is a key metric used by companies to measure core profitability. The contracts are part of what Adnoc Gas, a unit of state-owned energy major Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, said is its biggest ever capital investment. They involve boosting key processing units to increase efficiency across its four gas facilities in Asab, Buhasa, onshore Habshan and Das Island, the company said. The engineering, procurement and construction management contracts were awarded in three tranches: Scotland-based professional services firm Wood secured $2.8 billion for Habshan, while a consortia of London-based Petrofac and Dubai's Kent received $1.2 billion and $1.1 billion for Das Island, and Asab and Buhasa, respectively. Adnoc Gas first hinted in November that it would make the investment decision for the Rich Gas Development project in 2025. A decision for another major project, the Bab Gas Cap development, is expected in 2026. The Rich Gas Development project will help develop new gas reservoirs, which in turn, would increase liquid gas exports, support the UAE's gas self-sufficiency agenda and provide feedstock to the country's growing petrochemical industry, the company said. The first phase of the project will focus on optimising and removing bottlenecks in existing Adnoc Gas assets while unlocking new and valuable gas streams, in addition to future-proofing its business. The company plans to decide on the next two phases of the project at Habshan and Ruwais to 'enable the delivery of greater production capacity to meet growing market demands', but did not give a timeline. The investment in the Rich Gas Development project marks a 'significant milestone' for the company, Fatema Al Nuaimi, chief executive of Adnoc Gas, said in the statement. 'This strategic investment is expected to deliver significant new value for our shareholders and enable continued sustainable growth for the company, our employees and the UAE,' she added. Adnoc Gas, which has access to 95 per cent of the UAE's natural gas reserves, is looking to boost exports of products such as liquefied natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas and naphtha. Its customers in the Emirates include utilities and industrial companies, which are supplied commercial quantities through an extensive network of pipelines. Adnoc Gas, alongside other Adnoc units, has been boosting investments to expand its geographical and operational reach. In May, the company reported a 7 per cent year-on-year increase in net income to $1.27 billion, driven by strong domestic demand for gas and continued economic growth in the UAE, the Arab world's second-largest economy. Adnoc Gas is also eligible for potential inclusion in the Morgan Stanley Capital International and Financial Times Stock Exchange emerging market indexes as early as June and September respectively, it said. Adnoc sold part of its stake in the subsidiary to institutional investors as it looks to improve liquidity and raise capital. The recently completed offering of 3.1 billion shares in Adnoc Gas increased the free float by 4 per cent to 9 per cent.
