Egypt & U.S. Form Joint Venture to Boost Global Pharmaceutical Exports
CAIRO - 28 May 2025: The Holding Company for Pharmaceuticals, Chemicals, and Medical Supplies has entered into a strategic joint venture with American pharmaceutical firm Dawah Pharma.
This partnership marks a significant step in Egypt's push to expand its pharmaceutical footprint globally, with plans to manufacture and export a broad range of pharmaceutical products and dietary supplements to international markets.
Minister of Public Business Sector Mohamed Shimi announced that the new venture will produce a diverse portfolio of products, including ampoules, sterile injections, ophthalmic solutions, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, and dietary supplements.
The joint venture structure grants the Egyptian side a 40 percent share, while Dawah Pharma holds a 60% majority stake. The newly formed company will focus primarily on exporting its products and opening new channels in global markets.
In a milestone move, the partnership's first phase will see the manufacture and export of six specific dietary supplements to the United States—marking the first time in the Holding Company's history to achieve such a feat after meeting rigorous international standards and requirements.
The agreement also leverages advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies, including the production of syrups, tablets, ampoules, pre-filled syringes, and transdermal patches.
These innovations are expected to significantly accelerate product deployment and support long-term growth for the Holding Company and its subsidiaries.
Shimi stressed that the new company will strictly follow international regulatory standards, particularly those enforced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
Adhering to these benchmarks will boost the global competitiveness of Egyptian pharmaceuticals—not only in the high-demand markets of Europe and North America but also in emerging markets across Africa and Asia.

Luxor Governor Receives US Senator Tim Sheehy to Discuss Strengthening Cooperation
Taarek Refaat Abdel Motaleb Amara, Governor of Luxor received Senator Tim Sheehy, a member of the US Congress, as part of his visit to Egypt and the accompanying high-level delegation. The meeting witnessed an open dialogue between the two sides, addressing ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. The Senator began his speech by expressing his happiness at being in Luxor for the second time after 22 years. He expressed his admiration for the positive changes taking place in the city and his amazement at ancient Egyptian civilization, emphasizing that Egypt is a country with a rich civilization dating back thousands of years. Sheehy added that Egypt is an important and ally in the Middle East region, and that it has a promising economic future over the next five years. He expressed his hope for strengthening American partnerships in Egypt and praised the country's ongoing comprehensive development efforts, particularly in infrastructure modernization and the renewable energy sector. On his part, the Governor of Luxor welcomed the US Senator and explained the governorate's economy, which is based on the cultural tourism sector, followed by agriculture and industry. He emphasized that tourist bookings have increased this year compared to last year, and that the booking rate for the upcoming tourist season is very promising and exceeds previous years, despite global events. The governor added that despite the hot June weather approaching, the continued growth of tourism in Luxor has not been affected. He attributed this to the stability and security Egypt enjoys thanks to the wisdom of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, who assumed the presidency 10 years ago. He also praised US support for the country. The US Ambassador to Cairo attended the inauguration of the new drinking water station in the village of El-Hanady, east of Esna, south of Luxor. This station will serve approximately 10 villages by 2024. The station was funded by the US Agency for International Development. Hurghada Int'l Airport Celebrates First Flight from Tashkent
Taarek Refaat Hurghada International Airport today received the first flight of Uzbekistan's Centrum Air airline from Tashkent International Airport, carrying 175 tourists. Ayman Salah, Deputy Director of Hurghada International Airport welcomed the passengers with flowers and souvenirs, along with the participation of the public relations and media team, and the traditional water salute. Laila Soueif hospitalized amid hunger strike for her son's release
Laila Soueif was admitted to St. Thomas's Hospital in central London on Thursday night as her health deteriorated due to the hunger strike she has been on for over 200 days to call for her son's release from prison. Activist and writer Alaa Abd El Fattah has been in prison since 2019, in what United Nations experts ruled earlier this week is arbitrary detention by Egyptian authorities. Soueif began a hunger strike in 2024, when Abd El Fattah's prison sentence on false news charges was due to come to an end but prosecutors refused petitions to credit the two years he served in remand detention toward his final sentence. Soueif has appealed to authorities in both Egypt and the United Kingdom, where she and her family hold second nationality. But 'nothing has changed,' Soueif said in a statement 10 days ago, announcing that she would resume the full hunger strike. At medics' advice, the assistant mathematics professor at Cairo University had lessened the restrictions on her caloric intake while maintaining a partial hunger strike in recent months following an initial hospital admission in February. In a statement on Thursday evening, her family said Soueif's blood sugar had dropped to dangerous levels. Sharing an image captured at the hospital, Soueif's daughter, Mona Seif, noted that until this afternoon, Soueif was still conscious but had declined medical intervention. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer last contacted President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on May 22 to push for Abd El Fattah's release. Though Soueif acknowledged Starmer's intentions in her announcement that she would resume a full hunger strike, she concluded that 'nothing is happening' to release her son, adding, 'we have used up more days than we ever thought we had. We need Alaa released now.'
