
Elon Musk calls for ISS to be deorbited
Elon Musk is again calling for NASA to scuttle the International Space Station (ISS) after a former engineer of the agency revealed hidden problems with its structure. Casey Handmer, a physicist and engineer who worked at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for four years, posted on X that the 26-year-old station's structure integrity is far worse than the public knows.
'We could wake up tomorrow and find, with zero warning, that it has failed catastrophically,' Handmer warned on X Thursday. Musk, the CEO of SpaceX , quickly responded, saying that even though his commercial space company makes billions from delivering cargo and astronauts to the station, it should be brought down by 2027.
'There are potentially serious concerns about the long-term safety of the [ISS]. Some parts of it are simply getting too old and obviously that risk grows over time,' Musk posted early Friday morning. The renewed push to decommission ISS came hours after NASA delayed a private astronaut mission by Axiom Space Inc because of a pressure leak in one of the station's Russian-built sections, meaning there could be less air to breathe.
The billionaire leader of SpaceX, Tesla, and X has been calling for NASA to scrap the $150 billion project since February. At the time, Musk was also the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and recommended to President Trump that the station be brought down 'as soon as possible.'
In his post, Handmer warned that these leaks are becoming more frequent and taking place in multiple sections of the ISS. He added that as the station's aluminum shell flexes, the metal fatigues and gets harder, which increases the risk of it cracking.
The former NASA employees revealed that 'multiple cracks have been discovered,' even though none of these pressurized sections were meant to crack. First launched in November 1998, the ISS is nearing the end of its operational lifespan and has been showing signs of wear and tear for years.
Last November, another leak in the Russian segment that had been worsening for five years sparked fears that the astronauts on board may need to evacuate , causing NASA to warn that this could lead to a 'catastrophic failure' of the space station. Astronauts have been patching the leak and keeping the module it's located in mostly sealed off to eliminate any immediate threat to their safety.
The new issue this month emerged shortly before the launch of Axiom Mission 4, a private spaceflight to the ISS operated by Axiom Space, in partnership with SpaceX and NASA. The mission was set to deliver four astronauts to the ISS for a 14-day stay. The crew aimed to conduct approximately 60 scientific studies, focusing on microgravity research in technology, life sciences, and other fields.
In a statement , NASA said that a new launch date has not been scheduled as the investigation into the pressure leak continues. The growing list of alarming maintenance issues is partly what drove NASA and its ISS partners - Russia, Japan, Canada, and 11 European countries - to make plans to retire the ISS by 2030.
However, Musk declared on Friday that he 'would like to go on record recommending that it be de-orbited within 2 years.' Musk's SpaceX was tasked with building the spacecraft that would assist in the deorbiting of the station. In June 2024, NASA awarded SpaceX a $843 million contract to build the deorbit vehicle, or USDV, that will be used to safely guide the ISS back into the Pacific Ocean in 2030.
That being said, decommissioning the ISS ahead of schedule is not that simple and would require agreement from all the space station's partners, not just the approval of President Trump. Trump could propose shutting down the space station before 2030, but in addition to getting the other ISS partners on board , funding for the deorbit mission has to come from Congress. Moreover, the SpaceX contract only covers the cost of building the USDV, not the entire deorbit mission. Last summer, former NASA Administrator Bill Nelson was seeking $1.5 billion from the US government to cover the entire project.

A Nazi rebranded as a Space Race hero – but you probably knew that already
Nasa, Nazis and the Space Race (Channel 4) is a strong, if misleadingly titled, one-off documentary. It tells the story of Operation Paperclip, one of the most controversial operations of the 20th century in which 1,600 former Nazi scientists were pardoned at the end of the war and then taken to the USA. There they were recruited to develop rockets, both for weapons and later space flight. In the meantime their reputations and history were conveniently whitewashed in the service of a new moral imperative: defeating the Russians in the space race. The film's title is misleading, however, because it quickly becomes apparent that this is really another chapter in the Wernher von Braun story. Von Braun was a member of the SS who worked under the Nazi regime and developed the V-2 rocket. How and why his past was forgotten and he was allowed to rebrand himself as an all-American hero – a space visionary rather than a war criminal – soon becomes the main point of interest in Nasa, Nazis and the Space Race. You can see why all the iron filings cling to Von Braun: his story is revealing and disconcerting, and here it is very well told. In the age of Netflix documentary series that go on forever and use all the bells and whistles as padding, a straight-down-the-lens history using only expert testimony and archive footage is intellectual balm. Splicing in Super-8 films of can-do, Roger Ramjet America in the 60s makes for great television. Von Braun himself, with his Aryan visage and bizarre helium voice, knew that he was telegenic before the term had even been invented. He cleverly utilised television, including through a Disney family programme called Man and the Moon; reputation veneering was one of his greatest achievements. But in focusing on the WVB story the film also undermines its own footing. The early voiceover promises newly declassified documents and exclusive footage, but by part four it's not clear what here is new. Only those who know nothing of von Braun – how he used to be perceived; how history judges him now – will be surprised at the documentary's conclusion. (That von Braun was allowed to outrun his Nazi past because of his scientific achievements.) And that takes some doing: von Braun crops up time and time again in popular culture, from Apple TV's space race drama For All Mankind to the Sixties satirist Tom Lehrer's song Wernher von Braun ('A man whose allegiance / Is ruled by expedience'). At the same time, here we have author Wayne Biddle on camera reminding us that his book Dark Side of the Moon, which came out in 2009, told us all of this 15 years ago. 'If he [von Braun] survives as a hero it's out of ignorance,' says a slightly tired-of-all-this Biddle. The question, then, is that if the von Braun story is old news, what in Nasa, Nazis and the Space Race is new? The answer is not much. Like re-reading a newspaper, it's an enjoyable, accomplished, but never revelatory way to pass the time.

Waking up at the same time each night can send you into a panic and leave you wondering why but the real reason is more surprising than just a racing mind. A good night's sleep is crucial for daily life, yet waking up suddenly during the night or early morning - typically 3 to 4am - is surprisingly common, with one US study finding that 35.5 percent of people reported jolting awake more than three times a week, as reported by Many restless sleepers believe their nightly wake-ups are caused by an overactive mind - reliving embarrassing memories from the past or simply overthinking - and often aren't sure whether they should seek help. 'As a cognitive therapist, I sometimes joke that the only good thing about 3am waking is that it gives us all a vivid example of catastrophizing,' Greg Murray, a sleep expert, wrote in an article published by The Conversation. 'Waking and worrying at 3am is very understandable and very human,' he added. However, the reason behind this phenomenon isn't rooted in anxiety or the stress that often creeps in during the quiet, dark hours of the night. Instead, the collective experience of a 3am wake-up call is intricately tied to how our bodies function on a day-to-day basis. Murray, the Director of the Centre for Mental Health at Swinburne University of Technology in Australia, tied the strange phenomenon to our body's neurobiology and hormonal rhythms. During a normal night's sleep, our neurobiology - the study of our nervous system's structure, function, and development - typically hits a critical turning point between 3am to 4am. Around this time, our core body temperature begins to rise, sleep pressure eases since we've already rested, melatonin - the sleep hormone - has peaked, and cortisol - the stress hormone - starts increasing, gearing the body up to wake and face the day ahead. This experience surprisingly happens without outside signals - like bright light peering through our bedroom windows - as our bodies are built to predict both sunrise and sunset thanks to our natural circadian rhythm. However, rising cortisol levels can play a key part in whether or not you fully wake up during the wee-hours of the night, as it mainly helps regulate your body's response to stress, The Cleveland Clinic explained. This stress hormone plays a massive role in making you feel on high alert and 'triggers the release of glucose (sugar) from your liver', giving your body a quick burst of energy during stressful moments. Simply put, if you're more stressed than usual, your body likely releases more cortisol during the night - leading to those abrupt, middle-of-the-night wake-ups. Although about one in three people report jolting awake in the middle of the night, the truth is we all wake up several times - we're just not usually aware of it until stress comes to play. According to Murray, when sleep is going well, 'we are simply unaware of these awakenings'. But with added stress, there's a good chance those brief wake-up moments turn into fully self-aware moments. Stress can also cause hypervigilance - feeling anxious or on edge about being awake during the night - which often leads to insomnia. External supports are also missing in the depths of night - no social connections or cultural comforts. 'With none of our human skills and capital, we are left alone in the dark with our thoughts,' Murray explained. 'So the mind is partly right when it concludes the problems it's generated are unsolvable - at 3am, most problems literally would be.' Once the sun rises, familiar sounds, smells, and sensations help put things in perspective. Problems that felt overwhelming just hours earlier suddenly seem much smaller, and people often wonder why they couldn't calm themselves down the night before. 'The truth is, our mind isn't really looking for a solution at 3am,' Murray wrote. 'We might think we are problem solving by mentally working over issues at this hour, but this isn't really problem solving; it's problem solving's evil twin - worry,' he added. The revelation stunned people across the internet, many of whom had long believed they were alone in their mysterious, late-night awakenings. 'So true. Reading this at 4am,' one user wrote to Facebook. Another added: 'My 4am issue is finally explained.' 'The Bain of my life,' a third chimed in. 'Interesting read.' 'I don't know about fears and shortcomings, but my brain goes off in all directions when I awake in the middle of the night,' wrote another. Joining into the conversation, another user wrote: 'These might be the answers to my waking most nights.' So, for those who wake up at the same time every night, the big question remains: What do you do about it? 'Buddhism has a strong position on this type of mental activity: the self is a fiction, and that fiction is the source of all distress,' Murray explained. As a helpful tip, Murray recommended practicing Buddhist-informed mindfulness during the day to manage stress - making it easier to use the same technique during those quiet, restless hours at night. If all else fails, traditional cognitive behavioral therapy advice can help - getting out of bed, turning on a dim light and cracking open a book to distract your mind and ease back into sleep. 'One last tip,' Murray wrote. 'It's important to convince yourself (during daylight hours) that you want to avoid catastrophic thinking.'
