Gerik crash: Bus driver to be charged tomorrow
IPOH: The driver of the bus involved in the crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in Gerik on Monday will be charged tomorrow.
Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the 39-year-old man, who was apprehended after being discharged from Taiping Hospital, would be taken to the Gerik Court.
"Tomorrow, after Friday prayers, he will be charged at the Gerik Magistrate's Court," he said when contacted today.
Earlier, it was reported that police arrested the bus driver at about 5.45pm after he was discharged from hospital.
He will be taken to the Gerik police headquarters to facilitate investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
It is learnt that the man was accompanied by three policemen, believed to be from the Gerik police headquarters, when they left the hospital compound.
It was reported that the bus driver was among those injured in the crash. Noor Hisam had said the driver sustained injuries to his hand.
On Monday, the bus, carrying 42 UPSI students, was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it collided with a Perodua Alza at Km53 of the East-West Highway in Gerik.
Thirteen students died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries in hospital.
The driver, his attendant, the other UPSI students and a family of four in the Alza all sustained injuries of varying degrees.

IPOH: A retired doctor discovered that he had been scammed after 11 years, losing over RM3.9 million from a non-existent investment scheme. Perak Police Chief Noor Hisam Nordin said the 74-year-old man lodged a police report at the Ipoh District Police Headquarters yesterday. 'The suspect had offered the victim an investment scheme, and the victim was interested in joining it because the suspect was a friend of his late wife. Noor Hisam said the victim became suspicious after receiving no returns from the investment. 'The suspect kept giving various excuses whenever the victim inquired about the investment,' he added. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. 'Police advise the public not to easily trust promises of high investment returns in a short time. Always verify if an investment is registered with the Securities Commission or Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM)', he said.

Yasin recital held in Ipoh commemorating UPSI crash, other fatal incidents
IPOH: More than 300 congregants attended a Yasin recital, tahlil and doa selamat ceremony following a series of heart-wrenching tragedies that have occurred in Perak, including the recent bus crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students. Perak Rumah Ngaji chairman Robaatun Hadayiah Harun said the event was held to pray for all victims involved in the tragic incidents over the past year. 'Previously, we were shocked by the crash of two Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) helicopters that claimed the lives of 10 personnel on April 23 last year. Then, on May 13 (this year), a Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) truck accident killed nine people, including five family members from Bota who perished in Jerantut, and most recently, 15 UPSI students died in a tragic crash in Gerik. 'These incidents are deeply saddening, and we express our sympathy to all the victims and their families by holding this event as a form of moral support,' she told reporters here today. Robaatun Hadayiah added that the event was jointly organised with the management of the Sultan Idris Shah II Mosque, Pertubuhan Wanita Prihatin Perak (PWPP), and the Malaysian Muslim Women's Welfare Board (LKPIM). She said the collaboration was hoped to unite the ummah (Muslim community) in facing trials and to pray for Perak and the entire nation to always be protected from any calamities. Earlier, the event began with Asar prayers, followed by Yasin recital, tahlil and doa selamat led by the Grand Imam of the Sultan Idris Shah II Mosque (Perak State Mosque), Abd Farid Salleh, in remembrance of all those who had lost their lives.
