Gormley 'doesn't lose sleep' over last year's final omission
Cliftonville striker Joe Gormley said that he "doesn't lose sleep" over not featuring in last year's Irish Cup final win.Gormley was the only substitute not used during the Reds' 3-1 extra-time win over Linfield in the decider at Windsor Park.Despite not making it off the bench, Gormley was one of the first players over to congratulate Ronan Hale for scoring Cliftonville's third goal and says he looks back fondly on the day."You do think about it [not featuring] sometimes, but I wouldn't lose sleep over it," he told BBC Sport NI."Even though I didn't play last year because Cliftonville won it, I won it."
'It would mean the world to score'
The 35-year-old is gearing up for his fourth Irish Cup final with the Reds on Saturday as they face Dungannon Swifts.Unlike last year, Gormley is almost certain to start the decider having scored 20 league goals as well as the winner in the BetMcLean Cup final and the opener in the Irish Cup semi-final defeat of Ards.Whilst keen to contribute in the final with his family watching on in the stands, Gormley is just hopeful the Reds can get past a high-flying Swifts side and retain the Irish Cup."I've been beaten in two Irish Cup finals, and they were still amazing days but last year we got the win, and it was an incredible day and what a feeling following the burden of 45 years," he added. "It would mean the world to me to score this year, but as I always say if Cliftonville win, I win that is the main objective."I don't care who scores, the most important thing is we win the cup."
'The man never lets you down'
Cliftonville captain Rory Hale is also eager to see Gormley have an impact in the cup final and praised the experienced forward's mentality."The man never lets you down, I can't remember the last time he missed a training session or let us down," he said."He doesn't care if he plays 90 minutes or one minute, he wants to make an impact. "It would be great to win the cup final, but it would be even better to see that man have a big say in it."Hale was named man-of-the-match in last year's final after an all-action display which helped end the Reds' 45-year wait for an Irish Cup success. He believes there is "probably a lot more pressure" on this year's cup final than last year's due to their difficult league campaign and need to qualify for Europe."Last year we had a really good league campaign, and we ended up qualifying for Europe before the split. This year it is a lot different; we've found ourselves in the bottom six which is really disappointing, so for European football this game means a lot," he explained. With the League Cup already secured, Hale has his sights set on a cup double, which he thinks would be a great achievement after a difficult campaign on and off the pitch."A lot has gone on this season, we lost so many good players and a good friend Michael Newberry, who is always in our thoughts, so to go and do a double with the circumstances this group of players has had would be amazing, but it is only amazing if we can win the trophy. We need to win."

Darwin Nunez makes Liverpool transfer exit decision after £60m offer rejected
Liverpool are keen to find a buyer for Darwin Nunez in the summer transfer window, but the Uruguay international could dictate his own future after Florian Wirtz arrives Liverpool may have to find a new buyer for Darwin Nunez, with the Uruguay international not keen on a move to Saudi Arabia at this stage in his career. Liverpool want to sell Nunez in the summer transfer window in part to help fund the club-record deal for Florian Wirtz, but face a few obstacles. The Reds are still in negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen over the structure of a deal for Wirtz. Their latest offer, submitted on Friday, consisted of £100million plus £14m in add-ons. Both sides are still confident the transfer will go through and Liverpool are looking at ways to raise funds. The sale of Nunez represents one of the best ways to do so, with the 25-year-old still having three years on his contract. He struggled for regular game time under Arne Slot last season, starting just eight Premier League games, and has hinted that he would like to leave this summer. Nunez is Liverpool's record signing, having joined from Benfica in June 2022 for £85m, made up of £64m plus add-ons, and the club are keen to recoup as much of that as possible. The Athletic reports that the club rejected an offer of €70m (£60m) from Al-Nassr in January, but have now fielded more interest from Saudi Arabia. Liverpool were reportedly contacted by Al-Hilal on Monday and would be keen to do business. However, Nunez is understood to favour staying in Europe, with a move to Spain or Italy his preference. The Uruguay international has been linked with Atletico Madrid, as well as Italian champions Napoli. It remains to be seen whether either of those clubs step up their reported interest in Nunez, who has contributed 40 goals and 26 assists in 143 games for Liverpool over the past three seasons. Earlier in the season, Slot was forced to respond to suggestions that Nunez had been benched for financial reasons, with Liverpool reportedly trying to avoid triggering a further payment to Benfica of around £4.2m. HAVE YOUR SAY! Are Liverpool right to sell Darwin Nunez? Comment below. However, the Dutchman is not oblivious to Nunez's unhappiness at sitting on the bench. 'I don't know exactly what is going to happen. One of the main strengths we had this season is that everybody accepted his role,' Slot said recently. 'And his role sometimes could be to start every single game, hardly be taken off, sometimes be taken off. It could be sometimes not starting every single game, sometimes not playing hardly minutes.' Nunez is just one of a group of players who could leave Liverpool this summer. Harvey Elliott and Kostas Tsimikas are both expected to leave in the summer transfer window, while there is some doubt over Luis Diaz, who is being targeted by Barcelona, although Liverpool don't want to sell the Colombia international. Andy Robertson has also admitted his place will come under threat if Milos Kerkez arrives in a £45m deal from Bournemouth.

Liverpool fans in agreement about Luis Diaz transfer after Argentina wonder goal
Luis Diaz has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona this summer, with the winger proving exactly why he is being chased with an incredible goal against Argentina on Tuesday night Liverpool fans have urged the club to keep hold of Luis Diaz after his wondergoal against Argentina. Diaz started as Colombia travelled to Buenos Aires for a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night. The winger enjoyed another strong season at Liverpool, scoring 17 goals and notching eight assists as the Reds won the Premier League title. But he has been heavily linked with a move this summer. Barcelona are keen to sign the 28-year-old, despite Liverpool insisting he is not for sale and the fact he has another two years to run on his contract. Diaz proved exactly why Barca are chasing him on Tuesday. He opened the scoring for Colombia 24 minutes into Tuesday's game at the Estadio Mâs Monumental. It was an incredible goal, with Diaz picking up the ball midway into Argentina's half. He then drove forward, past Tottenham star Cristian Romero and three other Albiceleste defenders. That run also saw him cut inside the box to the penalty spot and he then slotted a finish low past Emi Martinez. It was a stunning goal and one which saw Liverpool fans urge their club against letting him go this summer. One fan said: "He deserves a new contract and better salary. Another added: "Quality player, if he played for someone else we'd be saying sign him. Fans shouldn't be forcing him out." A third claimed: "The price tag just went up to 100 million." A fourth joked: "And some of you want Anthony Gordon." A fifth added: "How people want Luis Díaz sold I will never know. A sixth insisted: "Keep Lucho beyond this summer. He's still got it all." While a final fan concluded: "If we didn't already have him, we would be in here calling for the club to sign him." Unfortunately for Diaz, his side were unable to see out the win. Thiago Almada rescued a point for the hosts with nine minutes to play, leaving boss Lionel Scaloni cutting a relieved figure. "I think the best thing about the team is their constant desire to try, which is always valuable," he said. "Beyond the fact that the opponent always makes things difficult for you, keep trying and looking to recover the ball quickly. "Everything that is the desire in the divided ball, not giving up any for lost... From that point of view it is something to be very, very satisfied. it is something that in football today is very important. "Especially if they are going to present us with games like this. We have to be alert, face them and I think that in that the team was present. Happy." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. 'I would love that' - Liverpool urged to hijack £60m Manchester United transfer
Emile Heskey wants Liverpool to hijack a Manchester United transfer deal as the Reds look to bolster Arne Slot's squad this summer. Liverpool have already signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and are closing in on a huge deal for his former teammate Florian Wirtz. The Anfield club are also pushing to sign Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth and want to sign another attacker to strengthen Slot's attacking firepower. Liverpool won the Premier League by ten points last season but know reinforcements are needed ahead of their title defence with Manchester City expected to come back stronger and Arsenal well-placed for another title tilt. At the other end of the table, Manchester United made Matheus Cunha their first summer signing and are now working on a deal for Bryan Mbeumo. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. Mbeumo has verbally agreed a move to Old Trafford but United are yet to meet Brentford's £60m valuation for a player who scored 20 Premier League goals last season. The Cameroon international was linked with Tottenham and Newcastle United before Manchester United emerged as the frontrunners to secure his signature. But Heskey wishes Mbeumo was heading for his former club Liverpool, insisting he would have been a perfect addition to Slot's squad. 'It's hard to ever say Liverpool make mistakes in the market, because their strategy is usually just so solid,' the former England striker told Prime Casino. 'I would have loved to have seen Bryan Mbeumo at Anfield with Liverpool though. He's got loads going for him. Manchester United In: Matheus Cunha Out: Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof Liverpool In: Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi Out: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher 'He was someone that is tried and tested in the Premier League for a few years as well. His work rate's astounding. He knows where the goal is. He's very, very technical and understands the way that Liverpool would want to play. 'So it was interesting to see that they never really went in for him.' Mbeumo looks set to join a Manchester United team that finished just 15th in the Premier League last season and will not be involved in any European competition next year. Asked how United were able to attract Mbeumo and Cunha despite their dismal 2024-25 campaign, Heskey added: 'The thing is with United is that they still have the pull to attract players. 'Normally, Mbeumo would be wanting Champions League football, knowing what the club are going to do. 'Even now, without Europe, in a transitional phase, United can still get hold of players like him and Matheus Cunha. More Trending 'It's a bit like when I chose Liverpool, who weren't yet at their best. I always supported Liverpool, but I always wanted to be in on the ground floor on their comeback. 'I understood the assignment, and I saw where things were going if they went well. 'Mbeumo probably feels the same. He can be part of something that can be great again. 'Let's be honest, it's Liverpool and Manchester United when you're abroad. They're the only two clubs who matter to the rest of the world.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
