Rare Roman coin found in Dudley field sells for nearly £5,000
A Roman coin that is believed to be the first of its kind found in the UK has sold for nearly £5,000.Ron Walters, 76, from Kingswinford, West Midlands, found the coin with his metal detector in Wall Heath near Dudley last year.Mark Hannam, from Fieldings Auctioneers in Stourbridge, said the coin was bought by a collector from Scotland for £4,700 on Friday."Even though it's been in the soil for over 1,900 years, he's very pleased to add it to his collection," said Mr Hannam.
The coin, which dates to AD69, is thought to be the only one of its kind to be found in the British Isles.It portrays the emperor Aulus Vitellius, who ruled for just eight months during a period of civil war known as the "Year of the Four Emperors"."To find a coin from AD69 is incredibly rare," said Mr Hannam. "Most coins we find in this country are from the third and fourth centuries, and we are talking about a time when the gold was at its purest level."
The farmer on whose land the coin was unearthed will keep half the proceeds from the sale and Mr Walters, as the finder, will get the rest."It's not just the money," he said before the sale. "It's the historic value."It's a once in a lifetime find."The coin went for considerably less than the only other similar artefact to go under the hammer, which was sold last year in Switzerland for around £50,000.But Mr Walters told BBC Radio WM he was happy with the sale."Anything's a bonus," he said. "Normally the things that you find, you put in your collection because they're not worth selling on."He is planning to put the proceeds towards some repairs to his motorhome - and to continue with his metal-detecting hobby."It's surprising what comes up – not just coins, it can be anything."Belt buckles, buttons - they've all got a story to tell."

New York chef Adrian Hernandez Farina is helming a very 2025 menu of bistro bangers, from polenta flatbreads to seabream crudo with burnt blood orange and ricotta agnolotti with cavolo nero and pecorino. The fabulous fish one Noisy Oyster, Shoreditch A fishy new spot from Madina Kazhimova and Anna Dolgushina from Soho's Firebird, Noisy Oyster is all about seafood classics from Italy, Spain, Portugal, and France but made with local, UK catches. The menu is inventive, verging on the pleasantly unhinged; oysters come with a smoked tomato water and horseradish mignonette, while scallops are dressed with pickled raspberry, chilli and basil oil, There's also a confit tuna nicoişe, pressed skate schnitzel with mixed peach panzanella, and crab, bisque and fennel orecchiette. The spruced up pub William The Fourth, Leyton Exale, one of our favourite breweries in London, is behind this revamped grand Victorian boozer. Reopening on June 12, it'll come with the arrival of Short Road Pizza – also in residence at Exale's Bethnal Green pub Three Colts – a Romana thin crust style pie with American-leaning toppings, and, yes, plenty of hot honey. Expect pints and cocktails as well as DJs, big games on the telly, quiz nights, and karaoke. 816 High Rd, Leyton, E10 6AE 10. Surf and also turf Island, King's Cross Big chef lads Brad Carter and Tom Brown are coming together to launch a new restaurant takeover at the King's Cross outpost of Mare Street Market. Island – which you'll find in the venue's Chandelier Room – is tribute to surf and turf, with the duo pushing a coastal-take on the classic American steakhouse. Expect caviar crisps, pickled cockles, oyster caesar salad, trout pastrami and quail stuffed with prawn paella on the fishy side of things, as well as a mighty mixed grill.

Family fun as Chester Racecourse hosts 'Roman Day'
Yesterday (May 31), Roman Day featured horseracing and plenty of exciting other activities for youngsters, as well as appearances from special guest Zog, the dragon from children's author Julia Donaldson's books. Above, you can enjoy a selection of photos taken at the event. The line-up at Roman Day, which was free for those aged 17 and younger, also included Roman stunt shows, archery, bootcamp challenges, inflatable slides and a bungee run. There were birds of prey, a pop-up play village, and craft camp, as well as a heritage festival, camp curiosity, racing to school, and performances from arts organisation and charity foundation, AmaSing. Chester Racecourse said: "What a day! "From non-stop fun on the Open Course, meeting our equine ambassador Dieu Vivant, to thrilling racing and all the fantastic Roman-themed excitement — it's been a great day on the Roodee! "Thank you to everyone who joined us for Roman Day. "We can't wait to welcome you back soon for our next fixtures: The White Oak UK Friday Social and The Saturday Social on June 13 and 14." Winners at yesterday's races, held from 1.35pm to 5.35pm, were Noche Clasica, Myal, Tricky Tel, State Legend, Dream Harder, Sea Emily Run, War Hawk, and Topteam. The event followed a record-breaking Boodles May Festival, which saw attendance figures up by 11 per cent on last year.
