Dalhousie University using 3D printing technology to make replacement parts for navy vessels
Halifax's Dalhousie University is partnering with the Department of National Defence to extend the life of Canada's aging naval fleet.
The project uses an industrial-grade form of 3D printing to produce critical parts for vessels, like submarines.

Paul Bishop, a materials engineer at Dalhousie and lead researcher on the project, says the process is much faster than typical repairs or replacement.
'Which means to get a replacement part it costs many, many dollars and can take months just to get a singular part,' he says. 'Whereas with 3D printing, once you have the acquired approach nailed down, which is what we do at Dalhousie, you can print a part in a matter of hours or days.'
A gas atomizer is among the pieces of equipment Bishop and his team uses.
'(It) is where we convert solid metallic materials into a powder form that we need as the feed stock for the 3D printing process,' he says.
The powder is a copper-based alloy. Bishop says it comes from pieces of decommissioned naval vessels that his team is essentially recycling into powder, to then recycle into new vessel parts.
The next step in the process is done at the university's Advanced Manufacturing Hub where the metal 3D printing research is done.
'The level of detail and resolution is pretty amazing. We have three different technologies here that we're using,' says Bishop.

Directed energy deposition is among them.
'The navy's interest in this technology is that we can use it to repair worn or damaged components so they can be put back into service in a fraction of the time and a fraction of the cost,' Bishop says.
'This is a gamechanger for the navy and a lot of different circumstances and we can really get that vessel back in service in a very short period of time.'
The team then designs and develops parts, like impellers, from the metal powder from the gas atomizer.

They also use different technology to repair existing parts, like pipes.
'With this technology you can overlay different materials that have different properties, better corrosion resistance, or rebuild a worn surface, so that part can be put back into service,' explains Bishop.
He says one the main benefits of this technology for the navy is to keep everything in Canada.
'To keep everything secure and hopefully to grow an ecosystem within the defense sector where they'll be many, many companies doing this sort of work for the Canadian navy,' Bishop says.
'It's been a great development for the university and with our proximity to the Canadian armed forces and the naval base of course it's been a real win-win situation for everybody.'

Cornish Metals Provides an Update for the South Crofty Tin Project
VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 04, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Cornish Metals Inc. Winder Orders Orders have been placed with Qualter Hall & Company Limited ('Qualter Hall') for the design, manufacture, supply, installation and commissioning of the production and service winders to be used at South Crofty's New Cook's Kitchen ('NCK') shaft. The two winders are long-lead items and constitute an important use of proceeds from the recently completed fundraise. Qualter Hall is a UK-based company with a history spanning over 160 years, specialising in engineering solutions, particularly in the fields of bridges, water and flood control, mining, and shipbuilding. They provide comprehensive engineering services, including design, manufacture and installation and have a longstanding relationship with South Crofty. The 3.2 metre ('m') single drum 1,200 kilowatt ('kW') service winder has a maximum hoisting capacity of 12,500kg gross at a speed of up to 7.3 metres per second ('m/s') and will be used for production personnel and equipment. This winder will replace the existing 2.3m single drum 132 kW winder currently in-place and used for pre-production access and shaft refurbishment activities that will be relocated to the Roskear shaft. The 3.2m single clutch, double drum 1,200kW production winder will be used to hoist rock from depth to near-surface. With a maximum hoisting capacity of 11,500kg gross at a speed of up to 7.9 m/s, it is designed to handle the hoisting demands required for the proposed production rates as detailed in the South Crofty Preliminary Economic Assessment. TMG Appointment TMG has been engaged to provide project management consulting services to Cornish Metals to further the development of South Crofty by supplementing the Company's owner's team resources through the construction phase and ramp-up to full production with experienced project management, project controls, procurement and engineering professionals. New app to track and protect birds A new app developed for Birds Canada is designed to help scientists and volunteers collect information about birds and their population, faster and with greater precision. The charity teamed up with Punchcard Systems to create the NatureCounts mobile app. Whether it's a tree swallow or a yellow-headed blackbird, all species play a critical role in helping scientists monitor environmental health. 'They're a great canary in the coal mine, the first indicator that will tell us, 'Oh, something might be wrong here,'' says Catherine Jardine with Birds Canada. For decades, bird counts were conducted with pen and clipboard, a method that was not only time consuming, but hardly foolproof. 'That introduced a lot of potential for errors,' says Kyle Horner of Birds Canada. 'At some point somebody has got to interpret that handwriting, or maybe it's rained on the data sheets,' he said, giving examples of how the old-school method impacted the results. Now, that's changing, because new data can be entered on the spot. Birds Canada told CTV News that NatureCounts, is already having an impact with five years of research all digitized and easily accessible. 'We're reducing errors,' Jardine explains. 'We are making things faster and more efficient. We're eliminating tedious data entry so that conservation happens faster.' Even better, the app isn't just for scientists. It includes features that let the public join in as 'citizen scientists", contributing to bird monitoring and helping expand the reach of environmental research.
