Three Bangladeshi nationals who escaped from Hazaribagh detention centre nabbed in Bengal
Three Bangladeshi nationals who escaped from the detention centre inside Jayaprakash Narayan Central Jail in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, have been arrested from West Bengal, officials said on Tuesday.
The trio -- identified as Nazmul, Reena Khan, and Nipah Akhtar Khushi -- had illegally entered India without valid passports or visas and had previously served sentences in different jails across Jharkhand.
After completing their prison terms, the trio was lodged in the Hazaribagh detention centre, pending deportation to Bangladesh.
They escaped from the detention centre on Saturday evening, when the three reportedly broke through a window grille and breached the security cordon of the facility. However, the jailbreak only came to the notice of the police and district administration on Monday, sparking a state-wide manhunt.
The Hazaribagh police launched intensive raids in coordination with law enforcement in bordering states to nab them. The successful operation in West Bengal led to their capture, and they are now being transported back to Hazaribagh under police custody.
Officials revealed that the process to deport them had been initiated earlier, but there was no response from Bangladeshi authorities, which delayed their repatriation.
The trio remained in limbo inside the detention centre, which is meant to temporarily house foreign nationals awaiting deportation after serving their sentences.
This is not the first instance of a security lapse at the Hazaribagh detention facility. On March 8, 2021, two Bangladeshi nationals -- Mohammad Javed alias Noor and Mohammad Zahid Hussain -- managed to escape using a similar method by breaking window rods.
Later that year, on September 13, 2021, Mohammad Abdullah, a citizen of Myanmar, also escaped from the same facility.
The repeated breaches have raised serious concerns over security arrangements at the Hazaribagh detention centre.

Kendrapara: Asserting that Odisha government was committed to deporting Bangladesh nationals staying illegally in the State, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday asked the police and the district administration of Kendrapara to take strict action against such persons as they may pose a threat to national security. He said deportations would be made as per the law of the land. 'The local police need to work in coordination with Central agencies to tackle the tricky the issue of illegal immigration,' Majhi said. While reviewing the implementation of government programmes in the district, he directed the police to identify the unlawful settlers with the help of the administration and initiate steps for their deportation. 'All the infiltrators -- whether from Bangladesh or any other country -- will be dealt with sternly,' he said, adding that the State government is following a zero-tolerance policy towards foreigners settling down without valid documents as they are always a threat to India's security. Majhi, who also holds the Home portfolio, had informed the Assembly in March that 3,738 Bangladeshi infiltrators have been identified in the State. Kendrapara tops the list with 1,649 people, followed by 1,112 in Jagatsinghpur, 655 in Malkangiri, 199 in Bhadrak, 106 in Nabarangpur and 17 in Bhubaneswar. As many as 1,711 Bangladeshis from coastal Odisha were served 'Quit India' notice in 2005 in accordance with provisions of the Foreigners Act. However, the exercise to deport them was put on hold by the Centre amid allegations of wrongful identification of the suspected foreign nationals, an official said. However, 21 Bangladeshi nationals were deported to their country under Foreigners Act prior to 2005, the official said. Kendrapara's development issues were discussed as the Chief Minister took stock of administrative performance, infrastructure growth and social welfare initiatives. 'Kendrapara will become a launch pad for the State government's second-year development agenda,' Majhi said, while addressing officials and public representatives. The review meeting was attended by MLAs from the district and discussions were held on strengthening water resource infrastructure, accelerating industrial growth and expanding the district's renowned mangrove cover. Majhi asked the officials to focus on eco-tourism potential of Kendrapara and put efforts to attract more tourists to Bhitarkanika National Park and Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary while preserving ecological integrity. Also, the MLAs and other people's representatives drew the attention of the Chief Minister to the long-standing demand for setting up a medical college in Kendrapara and implementing the 'parikrama' (corridor) project around the Baladevjew Temple. Majhi appreciated the district's performance in the creation of Lakhpati Didis and the success of Subhadra Yojana. He also lauded the district's performance in grievance redressal, implementation of mid-day meal scheme and distribution of allowances. The Chief Minister asked the administration to prepare a comprehensive roadmap within a month to develop Kendrapara into a model district, with a special focus on industrial growth, tourism, renewable energy and uninterrupted drinking water and healthcare access. Earlier, Majhi participated in Tiranga Yatra from Mausi Maa Temple to the historic Shri Baladev Jew Temple. He also flagged off two outreach initiatives -- Krishi Rath (Agriculture Rath) and Revenue Rath.

Cops bust drugs cartel, arrest 7, including a British national
MUMBAI: An international drug cartel was busted by the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of Mumbai Police with the arrest of seven people. The police said among the arrested is a British national, who is the kingpin of the racket and smuggled the drugs into the country via Mozambique - a transshipment point for illicit drug trafficking. 'Acting on a tip-off, our teams on May 28 arrested Kuldeep Singh Harjeet Singh Gozara, 50, a resident of De Vere Gardens, Kensington, an affluent locality in London. He was carrying a trolley bag and when that was checked, our teams found 5.02 kg of cocaine, valued at around ₹52 crore, in it,' said a police officer. Gozara was picked up from Jogeshwari East where he had come to deliver the consignment. He is originally from Punjab but settled in London, said the police officer. The Worli Unit of the Anti-Narcotics Cell started a probe after the arrest of Gozara to trace his buyers and suppliers. Following his interrogation, they arrested Shaikh Mohammad Arif Uddin, who stays in Mozambique in East Africa, and is believed to be a Bangladeshi national. 'We also arrested Mahendra Preji, who hails from Diu Island. Our teams further arrested Abdul Samad Afzal Memon, Parvez Afaq and Rishabh Edris,' said the police officer. Police also seized various codes from them related to hawala payments which are being scrutinized. 'We have found that the accused made several trips to Mozambique and Dubai. Our interrogations are at the primary stage and the seized drugs' value is around ₹52 crore,' said the officer.

Three Bangladeshis who escaped from Jharkhand detention camp arrested: Police
Three Bangladeshi nationals, including two women, who escaped from Hazaribagh's Jai Prakash Narayan Central Jail on Monday morning were arrested within 15 hours from various locations in Jharkhand and West Bengal, said police. The escape was reported at around 7 AM on June 9. The detainees were identified as Rina Khan alias Fina Devi (29) from Dhaka, Nipah Akhtar Khushi (24) from Chattogram, and Mohammad Nazmul Gang (22) from Bagerhat district The police said they escaped the detention ward by removing the barbed wire from the jail's boundary wall. All three had been held at the detention ward of the Central Jail under charges related to illegal entry and use of forged documents. A statement issued by the police said Rina Khan was transferred to the Hazaribagh Detention Centre from Jamtara Jail on February 4, 2022. Nipah Akhtar Khushi was shifted on September 28, 2024 and Gang was brought to the centre on March 1, 2025. Speaking to The Indian Express, Jail Superintendent Jitendra Kumar said that a case has been registered in connection with the escape. An internal inquiry is being conducted to examine the breach in jail security. A Special Investigation Team was formed to search for the detainees, and based on surveillance and location data, teams were sent to Tisri in Giridih and Mihijam in Jamtara. Two other teams were also sent to Bangaon and Kolkata in West Bengal. In Bangaon, with local police assistance, Nipah Akhtar Khushi and Mohammad Nazmul Gang were located and taken into custody. Based on information from the Kolkata team, Fina Devi was also arrested from Dhanbad Railway Station.
