Woman's vintage Barbie doll bought for $11 at thrift store could be worth hundreds to collectors

Daily Mail10 hours ago

A Virginia woman bought a vintage Barbie doll from a thrift store for $10.99 - only to find it was actually worth up to $400.
The toy would have sold in the 1960s for just $2 - roughly $20 today - but can now sell to collectors online for hundreds of dollars.
Grace Caroline, 29, told Newsweek of her find: 'She is still in her original box from 1962 and looks mostly untouched.'
'She does have a case of what Barbie collectors call green ear, where the original metal earrings she once wore oxidized into the vinyl of the face.'
While the doll was missing the hand tag, the original booklet was still sealed in the box.
'I wanted to ensure that it was saved from the thrift to be in the hands of a Barbie collector where it can be cherished and appreciated after 63 years in storage,' Caroline said.
Red bathing suits were the standard outfit for Barbie dolls during the early 1960s, and some of the models cost up to $378 on eBay.
Caroline posted photos of the doll in a Reddit post that flooded with hundreds of comments, some questioning whether it was an original doll.
'I have a lot of people calling it staged because thrift stores have become very adamant in making sure the good stuff goes behind the counter,' she said.
'But with the sheer amount of daily donations thrift stores get because of our hyper-consumeristic lifestyle, it doesn't surprise me that gems like this do slip past thrift employees.'
Others could tell the Barbie was not a reproduction and congratulated the shopper on her find.
'For those in the know, you have scored an expensive Barbie. It looks genuine. Well done,' a commenter wrote.
'These are the reasons I still believe and I still keep thrifting. Well done and good on you,' a fan responded.
'That's really cool! My mom's best friend had old Barbies that I used to play with as a kid and my favorite part was that little catalog,' another person commented.
Amy McKune, a curator at the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures, was impressed with 63-year-old doll's condition.
Reaction: Some Reddit users refused to believe the doll was an original while others congratulated Caroline on her find
'She does appear to be in her original box, wearing her original swimsuit and red sandals,' McKune told Newsweek.
'Often the thin strap on the tops of those sandals has split as the plastic has aged.
'I can't see her ears to know if she still has her original earrings. The pearl earrings often have left an area of green discoloration around the ears.'
The expert revealed the exact model was a #6, the first kind of Barbie doll to wear the red swimsuit.
'Isn't it amazing that after only three years, Mattel had introduced six models?' McKune continued.
'The model number on one end of the box (Model 850) was used for all of the Ponytail Barbie dolls.'
A longtime Barbie collector claimed the doll was not as expensive as others but that it was still a major steal.
'This is a #6/7 ponytail, so not anywhere near as valuable as the first or second barbie,' the Barbie fan wrote.
'Still probably worth around $400 or so. She's in really nice condition and Titians are sought after, especially with no green ear.'
Made by Mattel, the first Barbie doll launched in 1959 and was the first mass-produced toy doll in the U.S. with adult features.
The doll became a national treasure, spawning other models that have their own adventures and jaw-dropping prices.
It's also been an inspiration for the entertainment industry, especially for the 2023 box office smash Barbie.
More than 50 million dolls are sold annually worldwide, but that could change now that prices of Barbies may rise due to tariffs.
Barbie competes with other famous dolls such as Labubus, a brand of dolls that has left fans terrified despite buyers purchasing them for $150,000.

Nicholas Hoult is unrecognisable as he shows off a new look and opts for THREE outfit changes while promoting Superman in New York City

Nicholas Hoult was unrecognisable on Monday as he strolled through New York City on the Superman press tour. The British actor, 35, plays Lex Luthor in the new Superman movie and has been promoting the film over the last few days. But there was a striking difference to the Skins star's appearance as he rocked a bleached blond hair do. Since his breakout E4 role 2007 Nicholas has sported dark, short hair - but the father-of-two has switched up his look for bleached locks. Nicholas was first seen walking around Midtown looking dapper in a brown tailored suit and a tan sweater underneath before he was seen leaving ABC Studios having changed into a white vest and light brown short-sleeved shirt. In his third outfit change of the day, Nicholas was then seen in SoHo in an all-white ensemble, showing off his toned physique in a white vest with a sweater draped over his shoulders. It comes just days after Nicholas revealed his 'worryingly' dangerous hobby of racing Ferraris and said he has to often reassure film bosses. Nicholas explained just how terrifying his love of speed can be. The father-of-two told The Daily Mirror: 'The fastest I drove was at the Circuit of the Americans in Texas, we hit about 170mph'. 'I was trying not to glance down because you might miss something. Going in a straight line fast isn't the worrying bit. It's going around the corners, that's when things can go wrong'. Nicholas often shares his love for racing to Instagram alongside snaps of himself posing alongside numerous Ferrari supercars. In one gushing post he said: 'Since I was a kid I loved racing, I grew up watching F1 with my dad and now I get to share the passion with my boy. Never thought I'd get the chance to drive myself, dream come true.' Nicholas is wed to stunning model Bryana Holly, 31, and together the fiercely private couple share son Joaquin, six, and another child born in 2022. Last year he confirmed the couple were married after sparking speculation when he referred to her as his 'wife'. Since his breakout E4 role 2007 Nicholas has sported dark, short hair - but the father-of-two has switched up his look for bleached locks The couple, who rarely make public appearances together, officially began dating in 2016 after meeting in Los Angeles. Warner Bros. released a new trailer for Superman earlier this month, as fans flocked to pick up their tickets just as they went on sale, seemingly at a record pace. Amazon announced also a special offer for Prime members to see Superman a few days before its July 11 release, with early screenings on July 8. With the trailer's debut on Wednesday, it was also announced by Fandango that the Prime early screenings were the ticket retailer's best first-day ticket pre-sales of 2025. Fans have not been hesitating to scoop up their own tickets for the July 11 release, with many taking to social media to show off their ticket purchases. Early box office projections have already been quite huge, with early numbers suggesting it could open between $154 million and $175 million. If this record pace continues, it could be even higher, as fans have continued to express their excitement on social media all day on Wednesday after the new trailer dropped. The trailer begins with a massive skyscraper falling and Superman (David Corenswet) swooping in to stop it from hitting the ground as we hear Lex Luthor (Nicholas) detailing his plan to destroy the Man of Steel. Luthor and his minions are seen destroying Superman's Fortress of Solitude, while we also see Superman/Clark Kent making out with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), along with shots of his parents (Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell). Droids are seeing picking up a battered Superman and taking him to the Fortress, along with shots of Superman in battle with Luthor's various henchfolk. One particular shot fans have been cheering for shows Superman and his beloved dog Krypto the Superdog battle an enemy, literally punching his teeth out and hitting the camera lens, breaking the proverbial 'fourth wall.' Superman is also see clashing with the abrasive Green Lantern character Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), who challenges him to, 'make a move, big blue.' More shots show people all over the world rooting for Superman, which infuriates Luthor, who says, 'They chose him, let them die.'

Olivia Munn makes surprise statement about ex Aaron Rodgers after she was blamed for his family's estrangement

Olivia Munn spoke out about her ex Aaron Rodgers - whom she dated from 2014 until 2017. The 44-year-old actress, who is now married to John Mulaney, appeared on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast, and was asked if she watched Aaron's documentary on Netflix. 'I didn't watch it. I knew what it was going to be,' she told Dax on the Monday episode. Adding: 'It was going to push a narrative that during my time with them, never would ring true... There was this narrative that took hold because if you remember, back in the day, Jessica Simpson was hung out to dry for the Cowboys failures,' referring to Jessica's relationship with then-Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. At the time of Olivia and Aaron's relationship, Aaron was in the midst of an estrangement with his parents Ed and Darla and brother Jordan - an estrangement which many believed was Olivia's fault. The actress, who is now married to John Mulaney , appeared on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast, and was asked if she watched Aaron's documentary on Netflix; seen with Aaron in February 2016 When Jessica dated Tony from 2007 until 2009, many fans unfairly blamed the singer when he didn't play his best - but never said anything to her when he played well. 'During the time I was with him, he had three hail marys, I think two NFC championships - not wins - but he made it into the NFC championship, which is very hard,' Olivia said. 'No one would want to talk about that. I didn't get credit for any of the wins,' she said. Olivia said: 'There's this whole big narrative that stayed with me for so many years, but there was just this dynamic in the family that had nothing to do with me. It became this whole big thing, and people were like, "I can't with her, she's keeping this family apart."' 'People have speculated for many years what was the rift, and I know, but I'm not saying because it's not my story to tell,' Olivia revealed. In 2024, Aaron finally cleared the decade-long rumor that she caused his estrangement with his family. In an interview for the book Out of the Darkness: Mystery of Aaron Rodgers by Ian O'Connor, he said that his 'deep-rooted' family issues have 'nothing to do with' Olivia. Olivia said when he had made those statements, she was in the midst of her cancer treatment for breast cancer, and that she appreciated he said it. 'Thank God somebody had read it and said, "Oh wait! Aaron speaks. You've been asking for the longest time. This is the constant conversation. The man himself is saying it. They don't want that answer... I was really grateful that he did that. Even if people didn't want to take hold of that statement, it made me feel good that he it was said.' Aaron's estrangement with his family was revealed in 2016 after his brother Jordan talked about it on his Bachelorette stint. Soon after dad Ed confirmed the estrangement in an interview with The New York Times. One year after Olivia and Aaron split, Olivia revealed on Andy Cohen Live that Aaron and his family didn't speak for 'months before we started dating.' She said she supported him mending the relationship, and encouraged him to reach out to them via phone. During Olivia's relationship with Aaron, she also spoke candidly about their sex life, which his mom Darla 'disapproved of' due to her religious views. Andy had asked her if they abstained from sex on game days during the Plead the Fifth segment in December 2014. 'No we don't. Not on game day. There's not a rule, but it just doesn't happen because there's other things to focus on.' 'If he plays well, do you have sex after the game?' Andy asked. 'Depends on how late the game is. Usually I try to have sex as much as I can,' she joked. 'There's no rules. It usually doesn't happen because there's a lot to do,' she added. 'I will say that all the good luck charms are on the field and in the stands so it has nothing to do with me.' Olivia and her husband John recently became parents of two - the couple welcomed their second child together, a daughter Méi June Mulaney who was born via surrogate September 2024. The couple, who wed in July 2024, also share three-year-old son Malcolm together. Olivia has undergone five surgeries since being diagnosed with luminal B breast cancer in both breasts in 2023 - including the full hysterectomy and full double mastectomy. 'You fought so hard for this second baby too... and you've had this major surgery where you took out your ovaries, your uterus, had an egg retrieval. And that is it's own journey,' Today correspondent Savannah Guthrie noted. Olivia went on to describe how 'scary' it was receiving the breast cancer diagnosis while also actively trying to expand her family with John. 'We were planning on trying to have another baby. So at that point, I said, "I need to freeze more eggs." I'd already frozen eggs in my 30s but I just didn't know if they were any good because I didn't turn them into embryos. 'So, I said to John, I need to freeze more eggs or get more eggs out. And that's going to put me at risk because I'm going to put more hormones in my body and that's what feeds my cancer.

EXCLUSIVE Disabled man with able-bodied girlfriend SLAMS trolls who 'don't understand' their relationship

A disabled man dating an able-bodied woman has clapped back at haters who say they 'don't understand' how someone 'like him' got a girlfriend. Angel Martinez, 18, from Kansas City, was born with a condition called arthrogryposis, which causes joint stiffness. Unfortunately, the disease has left him wheelchair bound and unable to do 'basic day to day things' like 'using the bathroom, eating, getting dressed, or even getting into bed' without help. He connected with a woman named Karla on social media back in 2022, and when they met in person for the first time that November, it was love at first sight. But the couple - who are now gearing up to get married - has faced immense scrutiny over their relationship, with haters on the internet accusing her of cheating or alleging that his parents 'pay' her to be with him. Now, Angel has spoken exclusively with the Daily Mail about the unfair backlash they have received. 'People don't understand how someone like Karla could be with someone like me,' he shared. 'At first, that used to bother us. It was tough, especially for Karla. 'It's hard to understand why people judge without knowing us. But over time, we learned to ignore it. 'We realized it says more about them than about us, so we don't let it affect our relationship or how we see ourselves.' Angel admitted that in addition to the online hate, the couple often get 'stares' from people in public when they're out together. While chatting with the Daily Mail, Angel explained that the 'realization' that he will 'always need someone to help take care of him' was hard at first, but he's come to accept it. 'Basically, my condition makes some parts of my body harder to move because my joints are stiff,' he explained. 'It makes it hard to do basic day to day things that most people don't think twice about like using the bathroom by myself, feeding myself, getting dressed, driving, or even getting into bed. 'It's not easy knowing that level of independence may never fully be there.' He insisted that Karla loves him for his bubbly 'personality' and has never looked at him differently because of his disability. 'Even though I'm in a wheelchair, I've always shown people who I really am,' he dished. 'I'm outgoing, I joke around, I like making people laugh. My personality plays a big part in how I connect with others. 'Karla actually told me that's why she started liking me in the first place because of how funny and confident I was, and how I didn't let being in a wheelchair stop me from being myself. 'By the time we started getting to know each other, she already knew about my condition but she never made it a big deal. She saw the fun, confident person I am first.' He recalled falling 'in love' with her the moment he laid eyes on her. 'There was just something about her energy and the way she carried herself. It felt real from the beginning,' he gushed. Angel admitted that he was 'a little nervous' at first to ask Karla to help him with day-to-day activities, but added that she immediately stepped up. 'She never hesitated. She never made it feel weird or uncomfortable for me to ask for help. That meant a lot,' he gushed. Karla told the Daily Mail, 'I think the only hard part is wishing I could do more for him sometimes. 'But I love Angel for who he is, and I've never made his disability the main focus in our relationship.' In the end, Angel said he hopes that others can learn from their unconventional romance. 'To the haters, or anyone who doesn't understand how someone like me can have a girlfriend while they don't, I want to tell them to use me as an example that anything is possible,' he said. 'Instead of being negative or mad that I have a girlfriend, use it as motivation to work on yourself and find your own love. 'Know that there is love out there, and there will be someone who loves you for who you are. 'What's been beautiful is how much support we've also gotten especially after sharing our relationship online. 'Now, strangers will come up to us just to say they love how we love each other. That kind of support always outweighs the stares.'
