8 nabbed in three shootouts in Ghaziabad
Ghaziabad: In a 24-hour crackdown, police arrested eight people following three separate encounters across the district. Five of the accused sustained bullet injuries during the exchanges of fire.
The first gunfight occurred under Bhojpur police station limits, where two men were arrested in connection with a robbery attempt.
ACP Modinagar said police received a tip-off about three accused heading toward Patti underpass on a motorcycle. When a team approached them, they tried to flee but lost control of the bike and opened fire at the police. One of them was shot in the leg during retaliatory fire, while another was caught nearby.
One managed to escape. A pistol, live cartridges, and a motorcycle were seized from the duo.
In the second gunfight, police teams from Tila Mod and the district SWAT unit intercepted two suspects on a motorcycle near Kuti forest. The duo opened fire when asked to stop, prompting police to return fire in self-defence. Both suspects were injured and arrested. One of them is a wanted criminal in a cow slaughter case and had a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head.

Police recovered a stolen motorcycle, a pistol, and ammunition.
The third exchange took place in Tronica City, where police arrested four men for allegedly robbing a jewellery store on May 12. Police had set up a checkpoint and chased a suspicious motorcycle. When confronted, the accused fired at police but were soon overpowered after two of them were shot in the leg and another was caught after a brief chase. A fourth accused was later arrested based on their inputs.
DCP Rural said the gang was involved in the armed robbery of six boxes of silver jewellery, weighing around 4.5kg, from a shop in Som Bazaar. "The accused had planned the heist while drinking under a flyover and used a numberless motorcycle to evade identification," he said, adding that one gang member is still on the run.

HM Parameshwara stated that there were a total of 11 deaths in the tragedy so far and 56 people were injured. Among the injured, 46 people have returned to their homes after treatment. The remaining 10 are being treated at hospitals. As per the doctors, their condition is stable. 'To prevent such incidents, the government and the Home Department will formulate a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). In the future, directions will be issued to organise major events, conventions, and celebrations as per the guidelines issued by the police department,' HM Parameshwara maintained. The Chief Minister has ordered a magisterial enquiry by the Deputy Commissioner, Bengaluru Urban district, and until the probe report comes, "we will not be able to say anything." Compensations have been announced and the government is providing Rs 10 lakh, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) is providing Rs 5 lakh compensation, and the process is ongoing, he stated. 'I am visiting the spot. I will discuss the tragedy with authorities and KSCA officers, and their point of view will also be taken. There are a lot of questions regarding the incident. Let the enquiry take place first. The report will definitely point out lapses, and whoever is responsible, action will be taken,' he stated. Meanwhile, the Karnataka Police have registered Unnatural Death Cases (UDR) regarding the incident involving the deaths of 11 people during the stampede. The Cubbon Park police have registered 11 UDR cases, and no FIR has been registered in connection with the development, sources confirmed. This move has led to outrage, as the police department had the option to book the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and the influential event management company. Sources further confirmed that no one has, so far, come forward to take the responsibility. The UDR cases were taken up as per the directions of senior officers, sources revealed.

Calcutta High Court grants interim bail to social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli
The Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted interim bail to social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli, who was arrested by Kolkata Police for allegedly uploading a video with communal comments. The court held that the complaint against her does not disclose any cognisable offence. Panoli, a law student , was arrested from Gurugram in Haryana last week, after an FIR was filed against her at the Garden Reach Police Station in Kolkata in the wake of a viral video where she made controversial remarks criticising Bollywood actors on Operation Sindoor . The police had maintained that her now-deleted video had "derogatory and disrespectful" comments against a minority community. The bench of Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury ordered that she be enlarged on bail bond and security of Rs 10,000, and directed her to cooperate with the investigation into the case. Sharmishtha Panoli (File photo) NEW DELHI: The Calcutta high court on Thursday granted interim bail to social media influencer and law student Sharmishtha Panoli, nearly a week after her arrest for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through an Instagram video. Panoli was arrested on May 30. The high court directed Panoli to furnish a bond worth Rs 10,000. The 22-year-old, who was taken into custody by Kolkata Police from Gurugram last Friday, had been sent to judicial custody by a local court in Kolkata till June 13. However, her legal team moved the high court seeking relief, arguing that the case was a matter of free speech and that Panoli had already removed the controversial video and issued an apology. Her counsel, Md Samimuddin, said the court directed the state to ensure Panoli receives basic amenities while in custody, noting that such provisions were currently lacking. 'The High Court has also instructed the authorities not to register any fresh FIRs on the same cause of action,' he added. The arrest stemmed from a complaint filed by Wajahat Khan Qadri at the Garden Reach police station in Kolkata.
