Food safety authority urges states to boost action against obesity and reduce oil consumption by 10%

Food Safety
and Standards Authority of India (
FSSAI
) has called on States and Union Territories to step up efforts to tackle obesity and reduce oil consumption by 10 percent. This appeal came during the 47th Central Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting held on May 27 in New Delhi, where officials discussed steps to address these public health challenges.
Push for public awareness and local action
The FSSAI asked States and UTs to increase public awareness campaigns and take strong actions to achieve the goal of an obesity-free and healthier India. The authority urged local governments to actively take part in implementing these public health measures.
Schools asked to set up 'sugar boards'
One of the main points discussed was the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)'s recent direction to schools to establish 'sugar boards'. The FSSAI said this step is important to reduce sugar intake among school children and to encourage better food habits from a young age.

The FSSAI also underlined the need to improve
food safety monitoring
and expand the 'Eat Right India' campaign. It asked States and UTs to help ensure safe and nutritious food is available to all sections of society. It also promised technical help to support these efforts.
The 47th CAC meeting saw participation from over 60 members. These included Food Safety Commissioners from various States and UTs, central ministry officials, and stakeholders from sectors such as agriculture, food industry, consumer rights, research, and laboratories.

Action against illegal fruit ripening practices
In addition to the health campaigns, the FSSAI has recently urged stronger inspections to prevent the illegal use of ripening agents such as calcium carbide, often called 'masala', and synthetic colours or coatings on fruits. Officials have been told to inspect fruit markets and storage spaces regularly.
