The New York Knicks made the big decision to fire Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday after they suffered a six-game exit in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Indiana Pacers.

That means the search is now on for the franchise's next head coach, and several names have popped up on the radar. Two specific coaches whom the Knicks reportedly have their eyes on are Jason Kidd and Ime Udoka, but as Marc Stein reported, even speaking to one of them will be a task. Kidd has two years left on his contract with the Dallas Mavericks, while the Houston Rockets are happy to have Udoka as their boss:
'Two head coaches who are not currently available but said to interest the Knicks, according to league sources, are Dallas' Jason Kidd and Houston's Ime Udoka,' Stein wrote.
'One source with knowledge of the Rockets' thinking told The Stein Line categorically that permission to speak with Udoka would be rejected if the Knicks requested it.
A similar response would be expected from the Mavericks, but a read on their position as conclusive as Houston's could not be immediately confirmed Tuesday night. Kidd has two seasons left on a contract extension he received during last season's playoffs with the Mavericks in the midst of a run to the NBA Finals.'

Udoka has done a great job with the Rockets despite bowing out in the first round of the playoffs. As for Kidd, he's seemingly going nowhere. The Mavericks are very committed to him.
However, Kidd once played for the Knicks, and as Stein noted, they interviewed him for the HC opening in 2020 before deciding to hire Thibodeau. Kidd already has a relationship with franchise star Jalen Brunson as well after his time with Dallas.
Both Kidd and Udoka could be great candidates, but obtaining permission to have any contact will be tough.
Some big decisions lie ahead for the Knicks as they look to finally make a Finals run in 2025-26.

'As soon as he signed that contract, he was up for trade, because that contract is so trade-friendly,' Bulls insider Joe Cowley said on Wednesday. 'It's basically a one year, $10 million deal. The team has the option for the next 10 million for year number two.' Ball isn't the only trade candidate as everyone expects Nikola Vucevic to be traded this offseason. Because of the Bulls' desire to remain competitive (which has resulted in three straight play-in tournament exits), they are stuck in an awkward middleground that has shown no signs of ending. 'It's not only Lonzo up for trade, Vooch (Nikola Vucevic) is up for trade,' Cowley continued. 'I mean, the Bulls are trying to change this roster over, and again, talk about walking a fine line and a tight rope, they're trying to do so while still trying to be competitive for some ungodly reason. That's the path that they continue to choose. So enjoy late lottery picks every year.' Advertisement Lonzo Ball and Nikola Vucevic are two key players that might get traded this offseason, but Josh Giddey is someone that the Bulls are liklely going to re-sign. 'I think we all wrote when Lonzo signed that deal on the, I believe, was the night of the trade deadline in Minnesota, we all wrote that, basically, this deal was signed to be a trade candidate,' Cowley said. 'I mean, Lonzo spun it as he wanted to stay here. He wanted to stay close to Dr. Cole. But look, everything is on the table for the Bulls this off season. Vooch, Lonzo, a package of those two, whatever they can do to try and add to this mix that they're trying to build on the run, as well as resigning Josh Giddey, that's going to be coming shortly too.' As you can see, the Bulls have big decisions to make surrounding a lot of their top players. This is another crucial offseason for the team, and it has to be a good one as the fan base grew tired of the on-court product a long time ago. The offseason is here for the Chicago Bulls, and it is an important one as the team looks to return to a more competitive form in the near future. The Bulls have been stuck during the past few years as their desire to remain competitive has stopped them from achieving the ultimate goal of being a contender. When a lot of teams are in the position that the Bulls are in, they choose to tank to get a better draft pick. Chicago hasn't done that, and it has resulted in three straight play-in tournament losses. Instead of tanking to get to where they want to be, the Bulls are going to make some trades this offseason. One of them could involve Lonzo Ball. Advertisement Lonzo Ball has been in the NBA for eight seasons now, but he did miss two full years because of a knee injury. Ball was selected with the second pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, and he has since played for the New Orleans Pelicans before joining the Bulls in 2021. A lot of people thought that Ball was going to be traded before the All-Star break, but he reached an agreement with the Bulls on a two-year deal. However, that deal left the door open for a trade, and it could be coming soon. Ball isn't the same player that he was before his knee injury, but he is still a good role player when he can stay healthy. He made his long-awaited return to the court for Chicago this past season, and it took him a while to get back into a rhythm. He finished the season averaging 7.6 points per game, which is the lowest total of his career. However, Ball also averaged only 22.2 minutes per game, which is also the lowest of his career. There are some teams across the league that could use a player like Lonzo Ball, and there are others that wouldn't be a good fit. Here are the three best destinations for Ball if the Bulls do decide to trade him this offseason: 3. Charlotte Hornets The Hornets would be an intriguing destination for Lonzo Ball because of the fact that his brother, LaMelo Ball, is currently the star of the team. If LaMelo ends up staying put in Charlotte, that would be a good situation for Lonzo. However, that trade might not be the best decision for the Hornets as Lonzo might not fit into their current rebuild plan. It doesn't seem like a very likely destination, but it would be cool to see the Ball brothers on the same team. 2. Dallas Mavericks Because of Kyrie Irving's injury late last season, Lonzo Ball could be a good fit for the Mavericks. After trading Luka Doncic, everything started to go downhill in Dallas, and the future was looking bleak. However, things started to turn around when the Mavericks shockingly won the NBA Draft Lottery. Dallas had less than a 2% chance to get the first pick, but that didn't matter. The Mavericks got it, and Cooper Flagg is going to be joining the team. Advertisement The addition of Cooper Flagg will be huge, but it doesn't solve every issue. Irving will be recovering from his injury for a while, and the Mavericks could use some help at point guard in the meantime. 1. Los Angeles Lakers Lastly, a return to the Lakers would be great for Lonzo Ball. Ball grew up in Southern California and spent his college days playing for UCLA. The Lakers are the team that drafted Ball, but he only spent two years with the team. The Lakers could use another experienced role player like him for next season as they look to make a deeper run in the postseason in what could be one of LeBron James' final chances at a ring. There is still a lot of uncertainty about Lonzo Ball's future in Chicago, but if the Bulls do decide to trade him, he likely wouldn't be too upset about joining any of these three teams. Pacers need more from Tyrese Haliburton in Game 3, but that's more than simply scoring
INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana struggled to score in the first half of Game 2 against the swarming Oklahoma City defense, putting up just 41 points on 34.9% shooting, including shooting just 46.2% in the paint. The problems started with their all-everything point guard, Tyrese Haliburton, who shot just 2-of-7 through three quarters, with not one of those attempts coming in the paint. That's happened to the Pacers a handful of times this season and in the playoffs — most notably Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Knicks, when he had 8 points on 2-of-7 shooting for the game. In the face of intense defensive pressure, Haliburton defers to teammates — if the defense is loading up on him, someone else has to be open. His instinct is to find that open man. As fans, we have been conditioned to expect our stars to attack in the face of that pressure — people want Haliburton to go Kobe and start shooting over triple-teams. People want him to be like Mike. Be selfish and pull his team up with him. That's not how Haliburton is wired. That's not the Pacers' formula. That's Indiana's dilemma for Game 3 and the rest of the series: The Pacers need more Haliburton, but it can't be just scoring. He's not going to go out and jack up 25 shots Wednesday night in Game 3 — he hasn't taken more than 23 in any game this season. Indiana thrives when Haliburton is setting the table and everyone is eating, but he's got to eat more, too. Thunder pressure defense Haliburton's challenge starts with the problem 28 other teams have faced this season: Oklahoma City's physical, high-pressure defense. Thunder defense has done a really good job in the first half. Active, ball pressure, physical off ball to disrupt movement and switching. Notice on the handoff to Haliburton, Holmgren is in a drop but Lu Dort is *parked* at the nail to help. Windows disappear quick vs. OKC. 'They got more guys than most teams in the NBA that are high level at the point of attack,' Haliburton said. 'They're really connected on the defensive end. I feel like they mix up coverages. I think coach [Mark] Daigneault isn't afraid to do things on the fly. He doesn't do everything that's like very traditional… 'I think the biggest thing is just personnel. Their personnel is different than everywhere else.' 'We've got guys that are hard to screen either because of strength or quickness or both,' Daigneault said. "[Lu] Dort comes to mind. [Alex] Caruso comes to mind. [Jalen Williams] comes to mind. Cason Wallace, for sure. They're good pursue guys. Having guys at the rim is helpful [Chet Holmgren, Isaiah Hartenstein]. You can't spring downhill and assume there's something good there for you. Hopefully, the help is deterring that to a degree.' Haliburton and other Pacers mentioned leaning into watching the film of Game 2 (and the first half of Game 1), seeing what didn't work, and what worked better in the fourth quarter of Game 2 (when Haliburton scored 12 points and looked more like himself, but it was too little to late). 'The answers always lie in the film,' Haliburton said. Pacers mixing it up When discussing the Thunder defense, Haliburton employed phrasing typically reserved for describing how to slow down an elite offensive player. 'You can't give these guys the same dosage, the same look of anything,' Haliburton said. 'If you try to run high pick-and-roll all game, they just crawl into you, really pack the paint, nothing is open. There's got to be a mix of things. Got to be off the ball, playing off the pitch, coming off ball screens. You can't run the same thing consistently against these guys. You got to mix it up. 'We got to do a much better job of that. I feel like I probably got caught in too many high pick-and-rolls where they can really pack it in and end up getting shots late against the clock, especially the first half of both games.' To a man, the Pacers talked about getting the ball into the paint more and working inside-out to get their attempts, as they have done all season. It also could mean a little more Pascal Siakam with the ball in his hands for the Pacers. "[Siakam is] one of the few guys on their team that really looks for isolation to score. A lot of other guys, it's through the flow of their offense and pace,' Caruso said. Whatever the Pacers do to adjust, it won't change how the Thunder want to play. 'My approach will be the same. Our approach will be the same,' Dort said. Indiana is going to come out at home Wednesday night in a critical Game 3 (with the series tied 1-1) and throw its best punch — and that punch has to have Haliburton shooting more. Just not too much.
