With this growth, the aerospace and the aviation sector would require more and more skilled manpower to design, develop, operate and maintain the aircraft, rotorcraft, rockets (launch vehicles), spacecraft, missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and support systems including test facilities.These opportunitiescreate huge job opportunities in both private and public sectors.
To become an aerospace engineer, a bachelor's degree in aerospace/aeronautical engineering is required. Apart from that astrong foundation of STEM subjects like Mathematics, physics, and Chemistry is required. Students can pursue graduation, master's, or doctorate degrees in specialized fields such as aerospace engineering, aeronautical engineering, aerodynamic engineering, aerospace structures and design engineering, aerospace propulsionand many more courses for research and other advanced roles in the domain.
The field also includes roles in areas like maintenance, quality control, and project management. Furthermore, with increasing breakthrough and innovations in areas like electric propulsion, UAVs, and additive manufacturing, the domain of aerospace engineering and aviation sectors have become highly multi-disciplinary.
Design and development job roles
Aircraft/spacecraft design engineers, aerodynamics engineers, propulsion engineers, structural engineers, avionics engineers look after the design and development, flow of air and gases, propulsion system, structure, and electronic and electrical part of the aircrafts/spacecrafts respectively.
Testing and research jobs
Flight Test Engineers oversee the testing and evaluation of aircraft and spacecraft performance whereas the job of Research and Development (R&D) Engineers are to conduct research and develop new technologies for the aerospace industry. Tunnel Engineers conduct experiments in wind tunnels to study the aerodynamic properties of aircraft and spacecraft.

Manufacturing engineers, quality control engineers, aircraft production managers optimize the manufacturing processes, quality standards, and oversee the production of aircraft, missiles, launch vehicles, artificial satellites and manned and unmanned spacecraft.
Management and Support jobs
To manage the operations of airlines and other aviation related business, oversee the integration of different systems, and to assist in the maintenance, repair and operation in the aircraft and spacecraft, the role of aviation managers, systems manager and aerospace technicians are integral.
Government, Defense and private sector jobs
Other than the above roles, aerospace engineers have major roles to play in government and defense organisations. While aerospace Engineers with ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) work on launch vehicles, communication satellites, space missions and related research, those with DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization) develop defense-related aerospace technologies, such as advanced military aircraft, aero-engines, missiles, and many other systems. In addition, aeronautical engineers work on aircraft maintenance, repair, and operations with the Indian Air Force and also in the private airline sector.

At a time when habitat loss and climate change threaten countless species, the discovery of a new species of parasitic wasp - named 'Losgna Occidentalis' from Chandigarh has drawn attention to the unexplored richness of India's biodiversity. A recent study published in Zootaxa, a peer-reviewed scientific journal for animal taxonomists, titled - 'Rediscovery and description of a new species of Losgna (Cameron 1903): reviving a forgotten ichneumonid genus (Darwin wasps) in India' - points out the rediscovery of the Losgna genus in India, after close to six decades, and describes 'a new species collected from an urban dry scrub forest in Chandigarh.' 'The solitary Losgna (wasp) specimen was collected from a windowsill in Chandigarh, during winter 2023–24. This locality marks the first time any new insect species has been formally described from Chandigarh. The specimen belongs to a parasitic wasp (family Ichneumonidae), a group known for laying eggs inside or on other arthropod hosts. Prior to this discovery, Losgna had not been recorded in India since Heinrich's 1965 monograph. No records, specimens or published literature on Losgna existed in any Indian institution after 1965. It appeared that the genus had vanished entirely from its once‐documented range in northeast India until we found this new specimen in Chandigarh,' Karmannye Chaudhary, who led the study, a researcher in bird ecology and insect taxonomy at the Queen Mary University of London, told The Hindu. 'We named the new species 'Losgna occidentalis' because it represents the westernmost known occurrence of the genus: prior records came exclusively from tropical forests of eastern India and adjacent regions of Southeast Asia. 'Occidentalis' signifies this western extension,' he said. Pointing out that the only existing specimens of any Losgna species are those preserved at the Natural History Museum, London, The Hope Collection, Oxford University and the Zoologische Staatssammlung München (ZSM), Munich - all dating from the British era, Mr. Chaudhary said, 'No other collections -Indian or international - were found to hold Losgna material between 1965 and our study.' 'As a researcher of Hymenoptera, I'm thrilled by the discovery of Losgna occidentalis. It highlights the importance of solid taxonomic work and shows how young people, and even citizens, can find new species in their own backyards. This project also exemplifies valuable international collaboration between institutions like the NHM and Oxford, which is vital given how underfunded and poorly coordinated taxonomy has become. Hymenoptera are crucial as pollinators and biological control agents, so identifying and describing new species is essential for understanding and conserving our ecosystems. I hope this discovery inspires others to explore local habitats, collect specimens responsibly, and collaborate across borders to document India's hidden biodiversity,' said Ritesh Kumar Gautam, scientist at Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

NEW DELHI: The Navy is now set to commission the first of the 16 specialised small warships, designed for anti-submarine warfare and low-intensity maritime operations along the coast, being built at Indian shipyards at an overall cost of Rs 12,622 crore. The first anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft, built by Kolkata-based defence shipyard Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in collaboration with L&T Shipbuilders, will be commissioned as INS Arnala at Visakhapatnam in the presence of chief of defence staff General Anil Chauhan on June 18. The 77-metre-long craft, with a displacement of 1,490 tonne and equipped with state-of-the-art underwater sensors, is the largest Indian warship till now to be propelled by a diesel engine-waterjet combination. "The warship incorporates over 80% indigenous content and integrates advanced systems from leading Indian defence firms, including Bharat Electronics Limited, L&T and Mahindra Defence," an officer said. GRSE and Cochin Shipyard are each building eight of these warships under twin Rs 6,311 crore contracts inked with them in April 2019. All the warships are supposed to be delivered by 2028. Named after the historic Arnala Fort off Vasai in Maharashtra, the first of these 16 warships reflects India's rich maritime heritage.

Nilekani commits second multi-year grant to AI4Bharat

Bengaluru: Infosys cofounder and chairman Nandan Nilekani committed a second multi-year grant to AI4Bharat—an open-source initiative at IIT Madras that is building foundational AI models for Indian languages. Its work spans speech recognition, machine translation, text-to-speech, and language understanding for all major Indian languages. In 2020, Nilekani saw the transformative potential of AI in Indian languages. Nilekani-founded EkStep Foundation and AI4Bharat began investing in language digitisation, data infrastructure, and early models tailored to Indian linguistic diversity. Applications were built within weeks of ChatGPT's release, ranging from chatbots in regional languages to integrations in governance and education. AI4Bharat's models became the underlying infrastructure for this deployment. AI4Bharat has become the language backbone of India's AI stack. Its open-source speech, translation, and text-to-speech models now power key public digital platforms. AI4Bharat's language datasets—meticulously collected in all 22 constitutionally recognised Indian languages—have been released as public goods, openly available for use through the AI4Bharat website and integrated into AIKosh, India's open AI repository. "AI4Bharat is building the infrastructure that ensures every AI divide, the vision of 'AI for All' is extremely relevant for our country. The 2022 grant established the Nilekani Centre at AI4Bharat, supported by EkStep Foundation. Over three years, this effort demonstrated how to build population-scale, high-quality, and open-source language infrastructure through community participation and scientific rigour. "I strongly believe that India can be the use case capital of AI in the world," said Nilekani. "With our DPI foundation, we can build better AI, and in turn, AI can turbocharge DPI. Our belief is that AI should be inclusive, not extractive. It should amplify every human being's potential.
