Too much work changes the brain... literally

Scientists find that working long hours produces significant physical changes in the brain, but are still unsure of what that means precisely. — AFP
We all know that working long hours is detrimental to our personal well-being.
But scientists now think that it may alter the structure of our brains.
A South Korean study, recently published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine , sheds new light on the risks of overwork.
It reveals structural alterations in the brain of people working more than 52 hours a week.
Like many working people, you may have already extended your day at the office long after your colleagues have left, perhaps to answer emails or finish an urgent task.
But at what cost?
This habit, deeply rooted in many professional cultures, is gradually undermining personal well-being.
It feeds chronic stress and weakens mental and physical health, to the point of disrupting the very functioning of the brain.
These are the findings of a team of researchers from Chung-Ang and Yonsei Universities.
Analysing the effects of overwork on the human brain, they conducted a study involving 110 professionals, mostly from the healthcare sector.
The participants were divided into two groups: the first comprised 32 people working 52 hours or more a week, and the second, 78 people with standard working hours.
Brain imaging revealed clear differences in grey matter volumes, particularly in areas associated with executive function and emotional regulation.
The results are striking: the scientists found a significant increase in grey matter in certain brain regions, as a possible physical effect of burnout.
The middle frontal gyrus, which plays a role in attention, memory and advanced cognitive functions, showed a 19% increase in volume in the most overworked workers.
Other areas were also affected, such as the superior frontal gyrus, involved in planning and decision-making, and the insula, which is essential for self-awareness, emotional management and interpreting social context.
The study authors state in a press release that 'the observed changes in brain volume may provide a biological basis for the cognitive and emotional challenges often reported in overworked individuals'.
What exactly does this increase in grey matter volume mean though?
For now, the answer remains unclear.
'While the results should be interpreted cautiously due to the exploratory nature of this pilot study, they represent a meaningful first step in understanding the relationship between overwork and brain health,' the researchers say.
For the time being, it is impossible to determine whether these changes are directly caused by overwork, whether they pre-exist it, or whether they are reversible.
Although the study sample is small – consisting exclusively of South Korean healthcare workers – the results form part of a worrying trend.
In 2021, a joint study by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) attributed over 745,000 deaths a year to overwork.
The link between long working hours and cognitive decline is now well documented.
At a time when trials of the four-day week are multiplying, these conclusions serve as a wake-up call.
'The results underscore the importance of addressing overwork as an occupational health concern and highlight the need for workplace policies that mitigate excessive working hours,' the researchers warn.
Concrete measures like legislation, public policy and time limits, need to be considered to protect workers in the long term.
The message is clear: if you're feeling tired, distracted or emotionally frazzled, it could be more than just a slump; it could be your brain sounding the alarm. – AFP Relaxnews

According to eyewitnesses, large crowds had assembled early in the morning at the aid distribution centre of the "Gaza Humanitarian Foundation'. As people approached the site, Israeli military vehicles opened fire and drones dropped explosives, resulting in mass casualties, they added. Medical sources confirmed that the bodies of at least 30 people and dozens of injured were transported to Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis and to the International Committee of the Red Cross field hospital in the city. In a preliminary report, the Gaza Health Ministry stated that a total of 179 people were brought to local hospitals, including 21 confirmed dead, five in a state of clinical death, and 30 in critical condition, after Israeli forces opened fire on a crowd gathered at an aid distribution point in the Al-Alam area of Rafah. A medical official described the situation around the distribution centre as "extremely dangerous,' noting that ambulances had difficulty reaching the wounded due to ongoing gunfire. Some victims were evacuated using carts. Simultaneously, Israeli forces also opened fire on civilians approaching another American aid centre near the Netzarim corridor in central Gaza. According to medical sources at Al-Awda Hospital in Nuseirat camp, at least one Palestinian was killed and 20 others were injured when Israeli forces fired on crowds near the entrance to Al-Bureij camp. RAFAH, Palestinian Territories: Gaza rescuers said Israeli gunfire killed at least 22 Palestinians near a US-backed aid distribution site today, shortly after Washington rejected Hamas's response to a ceasefire proposal as "totally unacceptable." International critics, including some allies, have condemned Israel over the humanitarian crisis in war-ravaged Gaza, where the United Nations has warned the entire population faces famine after a more than two-month blockade on aid. Israel recently introduced a revamped aid delivery mechanism in cooperation with a newly formed US-backed organisation, bypassing the longstanding UN-led system. The organisation, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, says it has distributed hundreds of thousands of meals since operations began last week, but the rollout has been marked by chaotic scenes at the limited number of distribution centres, as well as reports of casualties from Israeli fire nearby. Gaza civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that Israeli fire near one of the centres in the southern city of Rafah today had killed "at least 22, with more than 120 wounded, including children." AFP images from the scene showed some civilians transporting bodies on donkey carts, as others carried away boxes and bags of aid under the low, early-morning sun. The casualties were taken to Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, Bassal said. Displaced Beit Lahia resident Sameh Hamuda, 33, told AFP he had walked from Gaza City and spent the night with relatives in a tent near Rafah before heading to the aid centre around 5am to wait among a crowd of people. "They began distributing aid, but suddenly quadcopter drones opened fire on the people, and tanks started shooting heavily. Several people were killed right in front of me," he said. "I ran and survived. Death follows you as long as you're in Gaza." Abdullah Barbakh, 58, described "chaos, screaming, and overcrowding" at the scene. "The army opened fire from drones and tanks. Chaos broke out, and the area was filled with martyrs and wounded. I don't understand why they call people to the aid centres and then open fire on them," he said. "What are we supposed to do?" Asked for comment, the Israeli military said it was "unaware of injuries caused by IDF (army) fire within the Humanitarian Aid distribution site. The matter is still under review." Separately, Bassal said one person was killed and many others wounded by Israeli gunfire near another aid point in central Gaza. Only limited amounts of aid have entered Gaza since Israel recently eased a more than two-month total blockade, with a spokesman for the UN humanitarian agency recently calling the territory "the hungriest place on earth." The United Nations also reported looting of its trucks and warehouses last month. GHF, which employs contracted US security, said it had distributed 2.1 million meals as of Friday. The United Nations and other major aid groups have refused to cooperate with the organisation, saying it contravened basic humanitarian principles and appeared designed to cater to Israeli military objectives. GHF did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the reported deaths. Nearly 20 months into the war, negotiations for a ceasefire and a deal to free the hostages held by fighters have failed to produce a breakthrough since the last brief truce collapsed in March. Israel has since intensified its operations to destroy Hamas. The Palestinian fighter group said on Saturday that it had responded positively to a US-backed ceasefire proposal, but had emphasised the need for a permanent ceasefire – long a sticking point for Israel. Washington's main negotiator on Gaza, envoy Steve Witkoff, immediately criticised Hamas's reply as "totally unacceptable", an assessment echoed by Israel, which on Friday had warned Hamas to either accept the deal "or be annihilated." Witkoff urged the group to "accept the framework proposal we put forward." "That is the only way we can close a 60-day ceasefire deal in the coming days in which half of the living hostages and half of those who are deceased will come home to their families and in which we can have... substantive negotiations in good-faith to try to reach a permanent ceasefire," he added in a post on X. - AFP

At a Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters meeting Friday (May 30), Director Lee Han-kyung warned of worsening Covid-19 trends abroad. "In regions close to us — Hong Kong, China and Thailand — Covid-19 infections are rising, and this is a cause for concern," Lee said at the meeting. He urged senior citizens aged 65 and above, as well as residents in high-risk facilities, to get vaccinated, stressing that vaccination is key to preventing severe illness and death. According to government data, recent overseas Covid-19 cases are showing a noticeable uptick. In Hong Kong, confirmed cases for the week of May 11 to 17 totalled 977, exceeding the country's previous summer peak of 796. China's rate of positivity Covid-19 test results is steadily climbing toward last year's peak of 21.1 percent, while in Thailand, more than 65,000 new cases were reported in the three weeks following the Songkran holiday in April. Despite the global trend, the number of new Covid-19 cases in Korea remained at around 100 each week over the past month. Currently, South Korea estimates the number of confirmed cases in select hospitals on a weekly basis. Still, the government is taking a proactive stance in consideration that domestic cases last year surged sharply from late July to mid-August. Weekly confirmed cases jumped from 456 in the fourth week of July to over 1,400 by mid-August in 2023. To mitigate potential risks, health authorities have extended the vaccination period for high-risk groups until June 30, two months beyond the initial April 30 deadline. The Korean Medical Association also issued a public advisory, pointing to the seasonal temperature shifts, increased domestic and international travel and a noticeable drop in personal hygiene practices such as hand-washing. It recommended six precautionary measures: maintaining personal hygiene, wearing masks, prompt response to symptoms, testing for high-risk individuals and recent international travellers, getting vaccinated and improving indoor ventilation.
