Trump's Gaza 'riviera' should be for Gazans, says minister
US President Donald Trump's idea to rebuild the Gaza Strip as a swanky riviera is unacceptable unless it is for Gazans themselves to live in, a Palestinian minister said on Friday.
"It's very good to rebuild Gaza as a riviera -- but with its people in it," said Palestinian minister of state for foreign affairs Varsen Aghabekian.
Trump's vision for Gaza involves the United States taking over the occupied Palestinian territory, resettling its Palestinian inhabitants elsewhere and transforming the war-ravaged strip into a riviera for "world people".
Aghabekian said displacing Gazans elsewhere was "unacceptable, by all means".
"Let it become a riviera," she said, "but for its people, who have been suffering for such a long time and deserve that their place becomes a riviera rather than a besieged place that smells of death."
Aghabekian was speaking to the United Nations correspondents' association ACANU during a visit to Geneva to address the UN Human Rights Council.
She said it would be a "natural development" for her Palestinian Authority to run the territory instead of the militant group Hamas in future.
"Palestinian national interests should supersede any other factional interests," she said.
"The running of Gaza would be through the legitimate authority of the state of Palestine and its arm the government. That's how we see it for the future of Gaza."

Hamas called on Friday for international pressure on Israel to enter the next phase of a ceasefire between them that has largely halted the war in Gaza, as negotiations were resuming in Cairo.
The fragile ceasefire, which came into effect on January 19, "has to be maintained at any cost", said Aghabekian.
The ceasefire has seen the release of Israel hostages from Gaza, with Hamas staging elaborate handover ceremonies, and Palestinian prisoners from Israeli detention.
Aghabekian said hostages should be treated with respect and within the law.
"We would hope that there would be no more exhibitions of such parades in the future and that the release of the rest of the hostages and moving into the second phase takes place smoothly," she said.
Hundreds of Palestinians, some kept in Israeli jails for years, have been freed in the West Bank under the ceasefire.
"These people need a lot of rehabilitation. They need to integrate into a society that is already struggling and suffering, so there are a lot of issues of concern," Aghabekian said.
Israel's military began a major raid against what they said were Palestinian militants in the West Bank over a month ago, in the longest continuous offensive in the occupied territory in two decades.
"The situation on the West Bank is extremely volatile," Aghabekian said.
"What we are being threatened with is the Gaza-isation of the West Bank, which means that people are afraid that the model that has been exercised on the Gaza Strip -- the genocidal, atrocious, brutal attacks -- are transferred to the West Bank."

Attack Suspect Appeared to Live a Low-Key Life in Colorado Springs
Mohamed Sabry Soliman told the police that he had tried to disguise himself as a gardener on Sunday afternoon when he headed toward a group that was walking in downtown Boulder, Colo., to remember the hostages being held in Gaza, the authorities said. Mr. Soliman, a 45-year-old born in Egypt, carried flowers he had bought from a Home Depot store, according to a Boulder police detective. He wore an orange vest. And he had strapped on a backpack sprayer, the kind that gardeners often use to apply fertilizer or pesticide. But the sprayer was full of gasoline. The fiery weekend terror attack that the authorities say Mr. Soliman soon carried out — in a plot he said he had hatched himself — injured 12 people, who were burned by two homemade Molotov cocktails that the authorities say he threw into the crowd. Mr. Soliman yelled 'Free Palestine' during the attacks, the authorities said, and later told the police he 'wanted them all to die' because he believed the demonstrators were 'Zionists' supporting the occupation of Palestine. Before Sunday, Mr. Soliman appeared to have lived a prosaic life in Colorado Springs, where he drove for a ride share service and was raising five children with his wife in a worn stucco apartment amid the dry, windy suburban stretch east of town. He told the police he had assembled his dangerous arsenal of explosives from everyday household goods. But the assault resonated far beyond Boulder. It came roughly two weeks after another supporter of the Palestinian cause killed two Israeli embassy workers in Washington, D.C., sending fresh waves of fear through Jewish communities around the world whose members were left wondering if anywhere was safe for them as Israel's war in Gaza grinded on. Colorado Springs neighbor says Boulder terror attack suspect lived next door

(KRDO) – A family in the Cimarron Hills area of Colorado Springs said they recognized the man arrested in Boulder for the attack on Israeli hostage protestors as their neighbor. A man reportedly set people on fire on Sunday, leaving multiple people hurt as people gathered for a demonstration in support of the Israeli hostages. The neighbors wanted their names to be anonymous, but the mother said a man living at the apartment complex investigated by the FBI Sunday night introduced himself to her as 'Mohamed' when they moved in two years ago. The FBI said their suspect in custody is a man named Mohamed Soliman. According to Stephen Miller, who is serving as White House deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security advisor, the suspect was living in the country illegally on an overstayed visa. Miller said he was granted a tourist visa under the Biden Administration. 'This is scary. I'm going to be honest, this is scary,' the woman said. 'Especially the times that we live in. You see someone's car pull up, and you don't know who is who.' The mother's young daughter said she went next door to play with the man's children on a regular basis. She said she was going over to do the same Saturday, a day before the attack, when she said the whole family piled into their SUV in a rush, ignoring her as she walked over to their door. 'My mom asked me if they waved or not, and they didn't because the dad was driving, and he was rushing,' she said. 'You saw the dad driving on Saturday?' KRDO13's Bradley Davis asked. 'Yes.' 'Did he look like the picture of the man you saw who got arrested?' 'Yes.' She also said she saw the dad, introduced to them as Mohamed, walking out of the apartment with a large black bag and a yellow long-nosed lighter shortly before leaving. Both said they heard the FBI investigators when they came to their street on Sunday. The mother said the agents started further up the street and assumed it was about someone she didn't know until she heard them close in on their neighbor's home. 'You heard them yell out the address, and that's when we knew,' she said. The daughter said she heard a loud banging and believes it was the FBI agents entering the home. Both said they did not see any of the family members during the whole process. They said all the family's cars are gone from the street and driveway. The woman said the FBI did not contact them to ask about Mohamed or the family. She said they have eaten together, and they always seemed like a normal, neighborly family. The FBI said it was investigating the home in Cimarron Hills in connection with what the agency is calling a terror attack in Boulder. It has not been officially confirmed by law enforcement that it is the residence of their suspect, Mohamed Soliman. Law enforcement officials said there are now 8 victims in the attack, where Soliman allegedly used a makeshift flamethrower to burn the Israeli hostage protestors.
