Spain's PM rejects calls for snap election as scandals mount
MADRID (Reuters) -Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez asked citizens for forgiveness after his close ally quit his posts earlier on Thursday over graft allegations, and said his Socialist Party would undergo an external audit, but rejected the opposition's calls for an early election.
"We should not have trusted him (Santos Cerdan)," a sombre-looking Sanchez told a news briefing at his Socialist Party's headquarters, acknowledging that the accusations against him were very serious.
With various scandals swirling around his minority government, the case poses one of the biggest threats yet to the survival of the country's fragile leftist coalition government. Sanchez said, however, most of the attacks on his government were not grounded in reality.

By Nate Raymond BOSTON (Reuters) -A federal judge on Friday blocked President Donald Trump's administration from implementing parts of his sweeping executive order overhauling federal elections, including by requiring voters to prove they are U.S. citizens and barring states from counting mail-in ballots received after Election Day. U.S. District Judge Denise Casper in Boston issued a preliminary injunction at the behest of 19 Democratic-led states who argued that the president lacked the authority to mandate changes to federal elections and the states' voting procedures. The lawsuit is one of several across the nation challenging Trump's March 25 executive order, which he signed after years of raising doubts about the integrity of the U.S. electoral system and falsely claiming that his 2020 loss to Democratic former President Joe Biden resulted from widespread voter fraud. Part of Trump's order has already been blocked by a federal judge in Washington who in April prevented the administration from enforcing provisions requiring changes to the voter registration form and for federal election officials to assess whether people who are registering to vote are citizens. But that ruling was narrower than the one issued by Casper, who not only faulted the citizenship-proof provisions of Trump's order but also the part barring states from counting mail-in ballots received after Election Day. The judge, an appointee of Democratic President Barack Obama, said, "The text of the Election Day statutes require only that all votes are cast by Election Day, not that they are received by that date."

The White House said in a statement that any decision on the project would be made 'prioritizing the best deal for America and leveraging the most advanced and innovative technology.' A spokesperson added that the administration 'is committed to a rigorous review process for all bids and contracts.' A senior Defense Department official told Reuters that the Pentagon 'has no announcements regarding future contracts associated with the Golden Dome effort.' If SpaceX misses out on the project, it would signal the significance of the president's personal relationships when it comes to his leadership, aerospace and defense experts said. 'That people guiding the program or building it are approved based on their political affiliation signals a real concern that the project itself is very politicized and not being conducted on the technical merits,' Laura Grego, a missile defense expert and research director at the non-profit Union of Concerned Scientists, told Reuters. Insiders also told the outlet that there is a lot of uncertainty looming over the project and a 'scramble' among contractors and industry experts. 'There isn't a coordinated effort with a true vision,' an insider told the outlet. 'All of these companies are just grabbing at this pot of money.' The independent Congressional Budget Office has estimated the project could take 20 years to complete and cost $524 billion. After last week's blowup between Trump and Musk, the tech mogul issued a groveling climbdown in the early hours of Wednesday, expressing regret over the public fallout between him and Trump last week. 'I regret some of my posts about President Donald Trump last week. They went too far,' the world's richest man wrote on X. Trump also hinted that reconciliation between the pair was possible. 'Look, I have no hard feelings,' Trump said in the interview recorded on Monday.

Dutch government supports NATO spending target of 5% of GDP
THE HAGUE (Reuters) -The Dutch caretaker government is in favour of increasing the country's defence spending to a total of 5% of gross domestic product, in line with a target set by NATO, Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans said on Friday. "The government supports the new NATO norm to spend 3.5% on defence and 1.5% on defence-related measures," Brekelmans said in a post on X. "Given the increasing threats this is necessary to keep the Netherlands safe." At a NATO summit this month in The Hague, alliance members are expected to agree to an overall military spending target of 5% of GDP, with 3.5% of GDP going to core military spending and another 1.5% for defence and security-related investments.
