Siddaramaiah questions Sangh Parivar's contribution to India's freedom

The Hindu26-04-2025

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah questioned the role of Sangh Parivar in India's freedom movement and said that the Congress has nothing to learn from it on patriotism and nation building.
Addressing a Youth Congress convention, Yuva Kranti, in the city on Saturday, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the sacrifices of the Congress and its struggle in the freedom movement were immense. He contrasted this with the role of the Sangh Parivar, saying that it never took part in the freedom struggle but was now talking of patriotism.
He underlined the role of the Congress in the making of modern India and ensuring civil rights and social justice. 'Congress was born to ensure civil rights and social justice in the country and laid the foundation for implementing the Constitution of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar,' the Chief Minister said. But Sangh Parivar leaders like Savarkar and Golwalkar were against Dr. Ambedkar's Constitution, he added.
Mr. Siddaramaiah said the Congress workers must be aware of history and how they were distinct from the Sangh Parivar and its ideology.
He said just as Mahatma Gandhi led the freedom movement, it was Jawaharlal Nehru who laid a strong foundation for the Constitution in India. 'Nehru's contribution to unite and create a pluralistic India and instill a sense of tolerance is immense,' the Chief Minister said.
While Congress, through the Constitutional values of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, united the country, the Sangh Parivar was inspired by Manusmriti, which fragmented Indian society along caste lines, he said.
Describing Youth Congress as an 'army of youngsters being built to safeguard the Constitution and its values', Mr. Siddaramaiah said, and he called upon the workers to develop ideological conviction as to how they are different from the Sangh Parivar, which, he said, was against India's pluralism and the Constitution.
The Youth Congress workers were urged to develop a commitment to the cause of social justice and said that if their conviction was strong, they would remain firm in their ideological beliefs.
Citing from recent history, Mr. Siddaramaiah said that the BJP had opposed the Mandal Commission report, paving a way for reservation for other backward classes, while its leader Rama Jois had approached the court opposing reservation.
Appreciating the workshop, he called for organising similar camps in all districts across the State for the Youth Congress members.
Mysuru district in-charge Minister H.C. Mahadevappa cautioned the Youth Congress members to be alert to any challenges posed to the Constitution. He expressed concern that the Constitution and democracy were in 'danger' in the present times, and hence, it was imperative not to lower the guard.
Youth Congress leaders and members from different parts of the State were present.

The first-ever sacking of an HC judge would be degrading for the judiciary's position I was deeply saddened and shocked by the extraordinary discovery at Justice Yashwant Varma's residence in March. A man of enviable legal competence, great judicial efficiency, equable temperament and balance on the Bench, his visage had come to embody calm, reasoned authority. When the first firefighters arrived on the scene, they found several bags of unaccounted cash among the burnt remains. This appears not only to be the finding of the in-house inquiry but also the admitted position, since the judge's defence is that the outhouse was not in his exclusive control. "Today is the fifth anniversary of PM Modi's infamous clean chit to China": Jairam Ramesh

New Delhi [India], June 19 (ANI): Congress General Secretary in charge of Communications Jairam Ramesh on Thursday said the withdrawal agreement with China in 2024 resulted in a 'tremendous territorial setback to India' and slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'infamous clean chit to China.' He also called for a national consensus on the security and economic challenges posed by China. 'Today is the fifth anniversary of PM Modi's infamous clean chit to China, when he said 'Na koi hamari seema mein ghus aaya hai, na hi koi ghusa hua hai' (No one has entered our border, nor is anyone inside), only four days after 20 of our brave soldiers gave their lives for the nation in Galwan on 15 June 2020,' Ramesh said in a post on X. He said that this 'sorry episode' concluded with a withdrawal agreement on 21 October 2024 under which Indian patrols require Chinese concurrence to reach their patrolling points in Depsang, Demchok, and Chumar. ''Buffer zones in Galwan, Hot Spring, and Pangong Tso lie predominantly within the Indian claim line and seemingly permanently prevent our troops from accessing points to which they had unrestricted access before April 2020. This is nowhere close to the status quo as demanded by our Armed Forces and represents a tremendous territorial setback to India,' he said. The Congress leader pointed out that imports from China are booming, especially electronics, electric batteries, and solar cells. Important sectors like telecom, pharmaceuticals, and electronics are critically dependent on Chinese imports, he said. 'The trade deficit with China has reached a record $99.2 billion in 2024-25. Meanwhile, exports to China are lower today than they were in 2013-14 despite a much weaker rupee, which should, in theory, have made exports more competitive. This surrender to Chinese economic might is the result of the External Affairs Minister's similarly infamous statement when he said: 'Look, they are the bigger economy. What am I going to do? As a smaller economy, am I going to pick up a fight with the bigger economy?' he said. He said that it is now increasingly clear that China played a pivotally embedded role in Pakistan's military operations during Operation Sindoor. This support went deeper than the supply of weapon systems such as the J-10C fighter and PL-15E air-to-air missile. 'It encompasses the domains of AI, multi-domain operations and stealth, with Pakistan likely to get up to 40 J-35 stealth fighters from China in the near future. The challenge of a single front encompassing our northern and western borders appears to be a reality today,' he said. He said that the Congress had been calling for a detailed debate on China for the past five years. 'That has not happened. We hope that the Prime Minister will finally agree to such a discussion in the forthcoming Parliament session. It is important to collectively work towards a national consensus on these vital national security and economic challenges posed by China's emergence as the world's dominant manufacturing power and as the world's second-largest economy, which may well overtake that of the USA in a decade,' he said.
