Plans to transform sunken gardens submitted
Final plans to transform a set of seafront sunken gardens that were damaged in storms in 2021 have been submitted.
The £1.4m proposals by Douglas City Council would see two of the marine gardens and Queens' Promenade garden repaired after flooding caused by Storm Barra.
A marine-themed playground, a set of panels reflecting the work of Manx artist Archibald Knox, and newly-designed garden areas with seating have all been included in the plans.
Council leader Claire Wells said the gardens were the "gateway" to the island and the application reflected "the rich history and heritage of Douglas Bay".
The council hosted public drop-in sessions to gather views on the proposals last year.
About 600 residents took part, with 120 people giving their feedback to the council through questionnaires.
The plans include the replacement of a damaged playground in marine garden four with the new play equipment influenced by "the story of the Tower of Refuge" and the bay's seafaring history, a council spokesman said.
Wells said proposals for another of the sunken gardens had been "completely revised" because they "did not fully meet the expectations" of the public.
Instead, a new design aimed at young people that could be used "informally" for urban and wheeled sports had been put forward, the council spokesman said.
The plans were developed by ERZ Ltd Landscape Architects and submitted after being backed by the council's executive committee.
They had been designed to "help mitigate" any future flooding, as work continues on sea defences on Douglas promenade, the spokesman said.

Teenager in court charged with murdering boy, 14

Pint of Manx milk to increase by 5p from July
A pint of milk on the Isle of Man will increase in price by 5p to 90p from 1 July, the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture has confirmed. Under the Milk Prices (Amendment) Order 2025, a litre will increase by 5p to £1.50, but a 1,750ml container's price will not change. Most milk produced on island is processed by the Isle of Man Creamery, which is a farmer-owned co-operative. The order confirmed the uplift was recommended to "secure the future of the Manx dairy industry, ensuring a continuing supply of fresh Manx milk" for the island's residents. Retail prices for milk on the Isle of Man are set by the Milk Marketing Committee, which is chaired by the environment minister and includes representatives from the Office of Fair Trading and the National Farmers' Union. The last increase was seen in January 2023, when a litre rose by 10p to £1.45 due to rising costs in the dairy industry. The order, which does not need to be voted on by MHKs, will go before Tynwald later this month. Council plans to repair damage to lighting column
Marks and cracks on a recently installed illuminated sculpture in the Manx capital will be repaired after the TT festival, Douglas Council has said. The 20ft (6.3m) Three Legs of Mann bracket, mounted on a 39ft triangular column, was put up last month on a roundabout in front of the Sea Terminal. A spokesperson for Douglas Council, which commissioned the £36,000 project, said marks on the lighting column had been due to both wear and tear from parts being in storage for a "few years", and the installation process. The council said it planned to repair the marks and cracks, as well as re-paint the column, once the capital's roads were less busy after TT. The council spokesperson said the illuminated sculpture was part of the Douglas Promenade regeneration scheme which had also involved the Department of Infrastructure (DOI). Douglas Council said it paid to install the feature due to the wider project not being completed. BBC News has contacted the DOI for comment.
