Advocacy group threatens Meta with injunction over data-use for AI training
Austrian advocacy group NOYB will seek an injunction against Meta Platforms, it said on Wednesday, that could lead to substantial claims if the tech giant goes ahead with plans to use Europeans' personal data to train its AI models.
NOYB, or none of your business, led by privacy activist Max Schrems, said it had sent a cease and desist letter on Wednesday to Meta, which plans to start using personal data from European users of Instagram and Facebook from May 27.
Meta has cited legitimate interest under EU privacy rules for using users' data to train and develop its generative AI models and other AI tools that can be shared with third parties.
The U.S. tech giant said last month users would receive a link to a form that allows them to object to their data being used for training purposes and that private messages and public data from accounts of users under the age of 18 will not be used.
Schrems criticised Meta's rationale.
'The European Court of Justice has already held that Meta cannot claim a 'legitimate interest' in targeting users with advertising. How should it have a 'legitimate interest' to suck up all data for AI training?' he said in a statement.
'We are currently evaluating our options to file injunctions, but there is also the option for a subsequent class action for non-material damages. If you think about the more than 400 million European Meta users who could all demand damages of just 500 euros or so, you can do the math,' Schrems said.
NOYB said an injunction could be filed under the EU Collective Redress, which enables consumers to pursue collective lawsuits against companies in the bloc. It set a May 21 deadline for Meta to respond.
Meta rejected NOYB's arguments, saying its approach complies with guidance from the European Data Protection Board and follows discussions with the Irish privacy enforcer. 'NOYB's arguments are wrong on the facts and the law,' a Meta spokesperson said.
'We've provided EU users with a clear way to object to their data being used for training AI at Meta, notifying them via email and in-app notifications that they can object at any time.'
NOYB, which last year urged EU privacy enforcers to act, said Meta could give users an option to opt-in rather than opt-out and also provide clear conditions for AI training, such as using anonymised user data, in line with EU privacy rules.

Mark Zuckerberg's Meta assembles AI dream team after poaching top talents from Google, Sesame
Meta Platforms Inc. has poached top engineers from leading tech firms, including Google and Sesame AI, as part of its new team focused on building advanced artificial intelligence systems. According to a Bloomberg report, Jack Rae, a senior researcher from Google DeepMind, is set to join Meta's newly formed 'superintelligence' group. Meta has also recruited Johan Schalkwyk, a machine learning expert from voice AI startup Sesame AI, as per sources familiar with the matter who requested anonymity. Apart from that, Alexandr Wang, CEO and co-founder of data labeling company Scale AI, is expected to be involved in the project. The 28-year-old, Scale CEO, is considered an influential figure in the AI space and has built strong connections in Washington. Meta is also reportedly close to finalising a multibillion-dollar investment in Scale AI, which could be announced this week. The initiative is part of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's larger strategy to compete with AI leaders like OpenAI and Google. He is hoping the newly assembled dream team will enhance Meta's AI tools—particularly its language model Llama 4. The aim is to help the company develop more powerful systems for speech recognition and personalized AI features, particularly artificial general intelligence (AGI). To attract top talent, Meta is offering generous compensation packages reportedly worth tens of millions of dollars over several years, including stock options. A Meta spokesperson declined to comment on the new hires, when reached out by Bloomberg. Jack Rae confirmed his departure from Google for Meta but did not provide further details. Schalkwyk has not responded to media requests. The news agency reported that Zuckerberg has personally reached out to potential recruits and even met with some at his homes in Lake Tahoe and Palo Alto. The company plans to bring together about 50 members for the new team, including a chief scientist to lead the group. 'There are very few people globally who can do those type of large AI trainings very, very efficiently,' said Vahan Petrosyan, co-founder of AI platform SuperAnnotate. 'For that reason, higher pay packages may make sense for companies like Meta.' However, not everyone is accepting Meta's offers. At least one top researcher from a major AI lab turned down Zuckerberg's proposal, according to a source. Meanwhile, competitors are also working to keep their top AI experts. Google has promoted Koray Kavukcuoglu, a leading figure in AI, to a new role as Chief AI Architect. In an internal memo, CEO Sundar Pichai said, 'Koray will help to accelerate how we bring our world-leading models into our products, with the goal of more seamless integration, faster iteration, and greater efficiency.' New Delhi: India is evaluating new modes of futuristic transport, including elevated airpod-based systems and flash-charging electric buses, to tackle traffic congestion and reduce pollution in metro cities, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said in an exclusive interview with NDTV. Mr Gadkari, who has held the transport portfolio since 2014, spoke about the government's efforts to introduce alternative mass transit options that focus on comfort, speed, and environmental sustainability. The minister said that research is currently underway on multiple fronts, with proposals sourced from international companies and pilot projects already under consideration in cities such as Delhi and Bengaluru. "A total of 360 proposals have been received. Now we want to concentrate on the public transport system, particularly on electricity, where there will be no pollution. So in the Delhi area, we are now already developing, we have got a lot of proposals,' Mr Gadkari told NDTV. "The most important problem in our country is pollution. We import fossil fuel costing Rs 22 lakh crores. The other important thing is public transport. Indian society is not giving priority to public transport. Indian society now wants comfort. Compared with luxury buses, people are preferring them," he added. At the core of this is the concept of aerial pod taxis or "flying buses." Contrary to the term, these are not aircraft, but driverless electric pods that operate on elevated tracks. Mr Gadkari referred to them as "double-decker bus-like pods," with each unit capable of carrying up to 135 passengers. The infrastructure would involve overhead rail systems on which the pods travel, either suspended or mounted. "There are also many technologies from the USA, from European countries, and from Russia. We have already received 13 technology proposals. But we have to ensure that they are economically viable. The technology must be proven and economically viable because we want to offer these services at a cheaper rate. I'll give you an example. A unique transport proposal has been selected in Nagpur, my own constituency, as a pilot project,' Mr Gadkari told NDTV. The core innovation is the flash-charging system. Mr Gadkari explained that when the bus halts at a station, an automatic charging unit engages with the vehicle. "We received a tender. In that proposal, there is a bus with a capacity of 135 people, an air-conditioned bus. Just like there are air hostesses, there will be bus hostesses. There will be facilities for tea, coffee, and other things. And the bus is a flash-charging bus. That flash-charging system, which comes from Hitachi and Siemens, activates when the bus stops. When the bus stops at a stop, the system activates, and within half a minute, the bus is electrically charged and can run up to 40 kilometres," Mr Gadkari told NDTV.
