
Can turning purple urchins into kitchen countertop save California's seafloor?
Joe Lee surfaced from Mendocino Bay grasping a pearl. It was the 1800s, and a lush forest of kelp swayed beneath him, home to sea urchins and abalone — one of which had transformed a bit of grit into the treasure he held in his hand.
That pearl is still in Lee's family, and looks much the same as it did more than a century ago. But the kelp forests along the Northern California coast have, of course, nearly disappeared, leaving the seafloor covered in purple urchins in an unprecedented devastation of an ecosystem, and the adjacent fishing industry. The Asian American communities that once thrived off those kelp forests have also changed, searching for new ways to live off the ocean that has sustained them for more than a century.
When Lee found his pearl in the 1880s, he also built a wooden temple to Kwan Tai, the Taoist god of abundance, integrity and longevity. It sits in what used to be Mendocino's Chinatown, facing south toward the inlet where Big River flows into Mendocino Bay.
Earlier this year, Lee's great-granddaughter, Lorraine Hee-Chorley, 72, opened the temple doors, which students in the community's Chinese New Year parade still enter to receive traditional blessings. Hot sunlight flooded onto an altar adorned with offerings of citrus, which looked out on the ocean where Hee-Chorley's family foraged for abalone and pearlescent shells that they would sell to tourists in town.
'In this bay, there used to be tons of bull kelp,' Hee-Chorley said, looking out onto the water from the temple's porch. 'But it's not there. It's just not there.'
In its stead are blankets of those spiky purple urchins covering the seafloor. But now, a Bay Area scientist believes she's found a way to turn the scourge of these urchins into a profit point by using them as literal building blocks. And some of the people working with her are the Asian American fishermen who have spent decades making a living off of the ocean.
In January, Mickey Kitahara swayed with the morning tide at the bottom of the Albion Cove, about 10 miles south of where Lee found his pearl in the 1880s. He returns to this spot every month to remove purple urchins encroaching on vulnerable kelp fronds with his bare hands. He knows it's an uphill battle, but he feels he has to do his part to rehabilitate the Northern California coastline — while also supporting his family.
'Those purples in here, they just consume every inch they can, stacked right next to each other on a reef, and don't leave room for anything else,' he said.
A month later, Mickey, 42, and his father Mike, 75, stood on a metal dock in Albion, tending to their urchining equipment. On either side of the brawny duo were white boats with blue trim. At the bow of Mickey's boat, a yellow hose encircled itself like a snake.
About 35 years ago, roughly the lifespan of an abalone, a 6-year-old Mickey was learning to breathe through a hose just like it in the hot tub outside his Japanese American family's house in Albion. That was when Mike was making more than $100,000 a year diving off the side of his boat for urchins and abalone. He was carrying on a family legacy that began in Monterey's fishery, where his grandmother, Takako Kitahara, had shucked abalone on Cannery Row — and lost one of her fingertips to a blade. He passed that legacy to Mickey by gifting him a boat on his son's 22nd birthday. It was one of about 40 that filled the Albion estuary at the time.
On a gray morning in 2015, Mickey was christening his new urchin fishing license alongside his dad. 'Oh man, you're in for it,' he remembered a diver on a passing boat saying as Mickey cracked open his first catch of the day to find the shells, once plump and egg yolk-orange with roe, empty.
'The quality got so bad you couldn't sell 'em,' Mike said, looking on as Mickey stepped onto his boat.
Since Mike began diving for urchins in the '70s, the number of commercial divers in the area has shrunk 90%, he said. The number of urchin processors in Fort Bragg, which used to employ around 30 people each, has halved. Today, the estuary where Mike and Mickey dock their boats sees only around a dozen on a busy day.
'It's sad to see that a lot of these boats that have been passed down for generations go into disrepair or get scrapped,' Mickey said. 'Maybe it belonged to somebody's grandfather that was passed down to his son and passed down to his son.'
In the early 20th century, Mickey's great-grandparents were part of a thriving abalone fishery built by Japanese immigrants like them. Before the U.S. government incarcerated the Kitaharas' ancestors and 120,000 other Japanese people during WWII, they made up a large chunk of California's fishing community, including 80% of the fishermen in Monterey, said anthropologist Sandy Lydon. When they returned, the state had seized their boats and barred all 'Japanese aliens' from receiving fishing licenses, which they later reinstated. The Japanese community never recovered. Mickey's great-grandfather, who had previously sold fishing nets, became a gardener.
Eighty years later, Mickey was doing a bit of underwater gardening, filling his nets with unmarketable urchins. He looked at his watch, which counted down the minutes to when he would surface for a break from loading urchins into his basket. Bare, whitewashed rock and droves of zombified urchin husks surrounded him on the seafloor. But in the areas Mickey has been clearing for the past four years, a few patches of kelp stalks fanned out into fronds at the surface.
Since 2021, local kelp restoration projects like the Waterman's Alliance, Reef Check and the Nature Conservancy have relied on divers like Mickey to do an inverted version of what he was raised to do: collect urchins and then throw them away like piles of dry leaves.
'The idea is to get these areas to grow kelp, and then as the spores are released we can clear the area to allow for the kelp to grow without as much pressure from those purple urchins,' he said. Still, it was meditative, 'like raking leaves in your yard.'
Now, kelp restoration, too, is under threat.
In February, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for Pacific Ocean restoration fired more than 1,000 employees and is slated to close three of its California offices, including ones dedicated to marine protection and fisheries. NOAA helps fund the projects that hire Mickey, so losing that support is a 'real fear,' he said as bouquets of kelp bobbed on the bay.
'If it would not be enough to survive, I would need to switch things up and go find a different avenue to bring in some income,' he said.
The luster of Joe Lee's pearl, the protective spikes of the urchins collected by Mickey Katahara and even the bone of Takako Kitathara's severed fingertip have something in common: Each contains calcium carbonate. The substance is also the main component of marble, which is how Virj Kan hopes to help the kelp forest and a Northern California community built on the ocean.
Two years ago, Kan was in Mendocino after earning her masters from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in biomaterials, hoping she could lend her science background to the kelp crisis. While there she met up with a burly, tanned man outside an urchin processing plant in Fort Bragg who had just culled 400 pounds of purple urchins, which he loaded off his truck in buckets and barrels. It was Mickey Kitahara. Usually, he dumps them into a large bin, which might be repurposed into fertilizer or may just sit there indefinitely, he said. This time, he handed them off to Kan, a scientist.
'She was going to make tiles or something,' Mickey remembered.
In March, an urchin husk sat on the counter of Kan's home in Berkeley, a Victorian mansion built for a sea captain now owned by Stochastic Labs, a nonprofit that incubates entrepreneurs. Beakers and flasks perched on a gas stove behind Kan as she held up a small tile variegated with shades of dark and light purple.
'There's a lot of people studying the kelp forest, a lot of people that are helping to remove the urchins to bring the kelp back, but there's a missing link, which is, 'What's the market?'' she said.
In April, Kan launched Urchinite, a marble synthesized from pulverized, calcium carbonate-rich urchins, whose sales she hopes will increase demand for urchin removal and kelp restoration.
An Urchinite countertop measuring 40 square feet — and costing between $1,600 to $7,200, depending on its design — would restore 0.06 of an acre of seafloor, Kan said.
The 12 acres within the Nature Conservancy's purview in Mendocino would translate to roughly 200 countertops.
Back in Mendocino in May, Mickey looked at the renderings of Urchinite countertops and tables on his phone.
'I could see myself interested in a countertop,' he said. 'That would be beautiful.'
Mickey was feeling more optimistic than usual. Tomatoes were growing in his yard and bits of baby kelp were appearing out on the ocean in little balls Mickey calls 'lollipops.'
'It is a hopeful time of year,' he said.
At least once a day, though, Mickey thinks about 'Plan B': what he'll do if the fisheries don't come back, funding dries up and efforts like Kan's don't pan out enough to keep him diving.
'Some of the guys that have been doing it as long as my dad say the urchin industry is over,' he said. 'I honestly don't know.'

CLIMATEWIRE | Carbon markets that fund forest preservation and tree-planting might actually be worsening climate change by increasing risks for wildfires that emit massive levels of greenhouse gases, a new United Nations-affiliated report says. Forests have been seen as one of the most effective places to counter climate change by absorbing carbon emissions. But that's changed, says a May paper from the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), an academic arm of the international U.N. In the past decade, wildfires of record-breaking size have erupted in places such as Canada, Australia, Siberia and the Amazon rainforest. This week, forest wildfires forced evacuations of thousands of Canadians in Manitoba and Alberta provinces. 'Forests and peatlands have increasingly transitioned into massive carbon emitters in many parts of the world due to increasing wildfires,' the report says. Climate policies and carbon-mitigation activities 'fail to account for these substantial emissions.' The report highlights weaknesses in a central global strategy for addressing climate change — planting and protecting trees — which has attracted billions of dollars from polluters that fund the projects to offset their own carbon emissions. A large share of the money is paid through the voluntary carbon market, a largely unregulated system that has come under increasing scrutiny over its integrity. Recent major wildfires have been particularly harmful. The 2023 forest wildfires in Canada emitted more greenhouse gases than the total industrial emissions of any country in the world except for China and India, Ju Hyoung Lee, a research fellow at UNU and lead author of the report, said in an interview from Seoul, South Korea. In California, wildfires in 2024 destroyed parts of forests that were supposed to be storing carbon through an offset program under the state's cap-and-trade carbon market. Without systematic monitoring of forest conditions, the paper says, the voluntary carbon market and other policies that promote forests 'may unintentionally exacerbate wildfire hazards.' Planting new trees to absorb carbon could have the opposite effect, the report says, as more heat and increased carbon dioxide emissions from climate change accelerate forest growth while also depleting soil moisture. 'Planting more and more trees in such an environment with the purpose of carbon mitigation will likely increase carbon emissions due to future fires,' the report warns. When the businesses certifying forest projects in the voluntary carbon market consider wildfire risk, they normally look at historical incidents of fires, Lee said. But, she added, 'Forests are changing, and our forests [won't] be like what it was like for the last 20 years." Historical data often leaves out the past five years, which includes some of the worst fires on record, Lee said. As a result, fire risk is typically underestimated by nonprofits such as Verra, which sets standards for and certifies climate projects to be listed on the voluntary market, Lee said. Representatives for Verra did not respond to a request for comment. Concerns about forests and their changing dynamics have existed for more than a decade, Kaveh Madani, director of the UNU-INWEH, said in an interview from Toronto. The report hopes to get the message out, Madani said, that existing forest programs and certification standards were developed using science that's now outdated — and the projects 'can increase the risk of increased emissions, in some cases.' Madani emphasized that not all forest programs in the voluntary carbon market and elsewhere create a wildfire threat. The paper advocates reforming the voluntary carbon market and similar systems to better account for forest conditions and to prevent unintended consequences, including more wildfires. Rainfall, soil health, and expected future droughts and heat waves should be considered before approving forest projects 'as a carbon emissions reduction solution,' the paper says. Satellite observations could identify areas where forests are growing and fuels are accumulating, leading them to be excluded from carbon markets 'due to the potential high emissions in case of future fires,' the paper says. The risk of wildfire and other environmental conditions that could damage forests 'must be included in our planning for the future and the schemes that we have in place,' Madani said.

These graduating Lowell students were called ‘lottery kids.' The stigma never went away
When the freshmen class walked into San Francisco's elite Lowell High School for the first time in the fall of 2021, they were slapped with a label that stuck for the next four years: lottery kids. Unlike prior decades of Lowell students, those 621 students hadn't gotten in because of exceptional grades and impressive test scores. Those students and the following ninth grade class were admitted through the same mostly random process used at the district's other high schools — a decision based on a lack of grades and test scores in the early years of the pandemic to evaluate the Lowell applications. They were lucky. Some said it wasn't fair. They hadn't earned admission, didn't belong and would fail, a number of parents, teachers and others in the community said. Others, including a majority on the school board, hoped the change would be permanent to help bring more Black and Latino students to a school that was more than 50% Asian American about 1% Black. Lowell returned to merit-based admissions for the fall of 2023, leaving two years of lottery years sandwiched between merit-admission peers. Those two years could help answer a burning question: What if the district randomly admitted students to one of the top-performing and academically rigorous high schools in the country? It turns out that overall, the academic disparities between the lottery and merit students were relatively small, according to district data. The average GPA of the first lottery class was 3.45, compared to an average 3.69 GPA over the previous five years. The average SAT score of lottery students lagged by 78 points compared to the average merit-based SAT taker back to 2020, although lottery scores were still 240 points above the national average. And on average the class of 2025 took 2.65 Advanced Placement courses, compared to an average 2.8 over the previous five years, although nearly on par with the class of 2020's 2.69. Based on the basic academic data available, the sky did not fall as some predicted, said Tony Payne, district executive director of high schools. But that isn't surprising, he said, given Lowell's reputation as a rigorous academic school. 'Even when it was a lottery, I think families and students would self-select around this academic environment,' he said. 'Kids who would have gotten into Lowell anyway, a ton of them applied. 'I think the data makes sense from that perspective,' he added. Benjamin Zhang, who was graduating Monday in red cap and gown as part of Lowell's first lottery class, was perhaps among the kids who would have been at Lowell regardless of the admission process. But he and his classmates would never know. Still, Zhang, the class salutatarian with a full scholarship to Yale University, said in his graduation speech that they were defined by the lottery. 'That title hung over us like an overdue assignment. 'Not merit-based,' they said. 'Just lucky,' they whispered,' said Zhang. 'And … let this be our final act: To say that we are not defined by a lottery, a label or a transcript. We are defined by what we did with the chance we were given.' While the lottery had little impact on academic markers, it did have an impact on student demographics, with random admissions significantly increasing the number of Black and Latino students. The senior class this year, the first lottery group, included 22 Black students and 121 Latino students, for example, while the senior class of 723 students four years earlier had just five Black students and 78 Latino students. At the same time, there was more attrition in the lottery class, with 93 of the original freshmen leaving by senior year, compared to an average of 41 over the previous five years. Other district high schools also saw upticks in attrition, although not as large. District officials said understanding the data is complicated by the fact that the first Lowell lottery class was hit with a double whammy, entering high school after spending all of eighth grade and the end of seventh in online learning because of the pandemic. They started high school, lost among the three buildings and four floors at Lowell with masks secured to their faces, their social skills withered and their grade-level academics and study skills a big question mark. Lowell principal JanMichelle Bautista ticked off the list of challenges for students during that first year back to in-person learning: 'Behavior changes, academic progress, stamina for coursework, sitting in a classroom for 90 minutes.' Teachers would say the lottery kids were so different, Bautista said, but the reality was 'we were all so different.' The pandemic-era Lowell lottery triggered a fierce debate over whether or not the school should remain exclusive to ensure the district's academically motivated students could thrive, even if the student body had few Black and Latino students. For decades, Lowell had been a point of pride for the city, consistently one of the top performing public schools in the country, churning out prominent figures in politics, entertainment, literature and science. Amid the pandemic, the progressive-majority school board moved to make the lottery permanent in February 2021, after voting in October 2020 for a one-year random selection for upcoming fall freshmen. Lowell parents and other city residents were outraged. 'The job market is merit based, college is merit based,' said parent Surveen Singh during the school board meeting that made it permanent in 2021. 'Lowell's high standards, training and rigor have given many students, especially immigrant families, the impetus and skills to attend college and succeed. 'Why on earth would anyone want to take that away?' Critics of the merit-based system argued back. 'There should be no sacred cows in the SFUSD schools,' said Virginia Marshall, representing the San Francisco Alliance of Black School Educators. 'Every child should have the opportunity to go to Lowell High School.' A year later, following a recall of three progressive school board members and a lawsuit, the school board returned Lowell to a merit-based system. It does not appear the school board will reconsider the Lowell admissions policy anytime soon, even with the lottery class data in hand. 'We absolutely want to preserve the rigorous instruction and academic programming offered at schools like Lowell,' said school board President Phil Kim. 'We know students are up to the challenge, and families are asking for more of these opportunities across all our high schools. The demand is there.' Some members of the two classes of lottery students and their families said they felt the stigma of being at Lowell under the random admission process in the halls and classrooms. 'I heard those stories from the students,' Bautista said. On Monday, the four years of hard work and stress seemed to fade into the background as parents sat in the stands at Kezar Stadium watching the Lowell graduates walk across the stage as their names were called. 'I'm beside myself with joy,' said parent Jameelah Hoskins. Her son, Yusef, was among the 22 Black students in his class. He had been a straight-A, honor roll student in middle school, who at times — like many if not most Lowell students — struggled to keep up with his courses, especially after COVID, Hoskins said. 'The thing I remember is his determination to stay (at Lowell). He wanted to do the work,' she said. 'I was the one saying, 'if you want to go somewhere else, it's OK.'' Yusef will attend City College of San Francisco in the fall and enter the entrepreneur program, perhaps combining it with an electrician trade program, his mom said. Yet among the smiles and goodbye hugs on graduation day, the lottery lingered, a topic in family conversations and in nearly every commencement speech made by a graduate or adult, including Bautista. 'You were scrutinized, second-guessed, and demeaned. People including yourselves questioned your worth, your ability, your presence,' the principal told her lottery kids. ' Never did you shrink in the face of unfair judgment … You turned doubt into drive, exclusion into excellence, criticism into community. 'You belong in every room you walk into. You belong at every single table where decisions are made. You belong in every dream you dare to dream.'

South Korea's liberal-led legislature passes bills calling for special probes into Yoon and wife
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea's liberal-led legislature on Thursday passed bills to launch special investigations into former President Yoon Suk Yeol's short-lived imposition of martial law in December and criminal allegations against his wife, targeting the ousted conservative a day after his liberal successor took office. The bills previously were vetoed by Yoon and South Korea's caretaker government after his Dec. 14 impeachment over the martial law debacle. They are expected to be signed by new President Lee Jae-myung, a Democrat who won Tuesday's snap election triggered by Yoon's formal removal from office in April. Many members of the conservative People Power Party refused to participate in the votes, which took place after one of the party's lawmakers accused the liberals in a speech of being driven by vendetta. Lee, who as an opposition leader drove the legislative efforts to impeach and oust Yoon, pinned his presidential campaign on unity, promising not to target conservatives and calling for an end to political polarization. Yet Lee has vowed a full investigation into Yoon's martial law stunt and the allegations surrounding his wife, moves that could overshadow the new government and inflame tensions as Yoon faces a high-stakes rebellion trial carrying a possible death sentence. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office indicted Yoon in January over his Dec. 3 martial law decree, charging him with masterminding a rebellion and describing his power grab as an illegal bid to seize the legislature and election offices and arrest political opponents. Liberals have insisted independent investigations into Yoon are essential, saying probes by prosecutors, police and an anti-corruption agency were inadequate and hampered by Yoon's refusal to cooperate. If Lee approves the launch of independent investigations, special prosecutors could request the transfer of relevant cases for expanded probes, or direct public or military prosecutors to continue handling them under their supervision. The bills calling for independent investigations into Yoon's martial law decree and criminal allegations involving his wife both passed by a vote of 194 to 3. Dozens of retired marines, dressed in red shirts, saluted and cheered from an observation box after lawmakers passed the bill for a special prosecutor investigation into the marine's death, which also passed 194 to 3. Yoon's martial law decree lasted only a few hours after a quorum of lawmakers pushed past a blockade of hundreds of heavily armed soldiers and voted to revoke the measure. Yoon defended the move as a necessary act of governance, accusing the Democrats, whom he labeled 'anti-state forces,' of abusing their majority to obstruct his agenda and paralyze state affairs. That same majority now gives Lee a far more favorable path to advance his agenda, though conservatives claim it could grant him virtually unchecked power and allow him to pass laws that shield him from legal trouble. Yoon's wife, Kim Keon Hee, also faces multiple corruption allegations, including claims that she received luxury items from a Unification Church official seeking business favors, as well as possible involvement in a stock price manipulation scheme. She also is suspected of interfering with PPP's candidate nominations ahead of legislative elections in April last year.
