Former Alabama QB Reveals Why Kalen DeBoer's Nine Win Season Was a Success

Yahoo20-05-2025

The 2024 season marked Alabama football's first without head coach Nick Saban in nearly two decades. It was perhaps not a coincidence then that the Crimson Tide failed to win 10 games in a season for the first time since 2007, as Alabama entered something of a transitional phase under first-year coach Kalen DeBoer.
However, former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy does not think the Crimson Tide will be down for long.

"I like what they have coming back, I like the continuity," McElroy said in a new video for ESPN College Football. "I think you might be getting in on the 'underrated' Alabama team going into the season, which is seldom the case for the Crimson Tide."
McElroy explained that it was natural for people "on the outside looking in" to view Alabama's first season under DeBoer as a disappointment after the Crimson Tide enjoyed sustained success under Saban. And he further acknowledged that there were low moments for Alabama in 2024, such as the 40-35 upset loss to Vanderbilt, the nationally-televised 24-3 loss to Oklahoma and the ReliaQuest Bowl defeat to Michigan.
But victories over Georgia and LSU -- the latter at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge -- showed Alabama's potential under DeBoer. The Crimson Tide return practically their entire starting defense from 2024, and DeBoer is enjoying the quarterback competition between Austin Mack, Keelon Russell and Ty Simpson.
When looking at Alabama's schedule, McElroy said he would not be surprised if the Crimson Tide began the season 3-0 before a trip to Athens to face Georgia. But regardless of whether Alabama loses that blockbuster clash at Sanford Stadium, McElroy thinks Alabama will benefit from a "pretty manageable" home schedule, as teams like Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma come to Bryant-Denny Stadium this time around.

"You look at Bama trying to get to that 10-win plateau again, I like their chances," McElroy said. "But it starts by being undefeated at home, and it also starts by making sure that they play up to their potential on the road, which they did not always do a year ago."

Thousands of volunteers needed for 2025 World Police and Fire Games

BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WIAT) – The opening ceremony for the 2025 World Police and Fire Games is two weeks away, and organizers say they need thousands of volunteers. First responders from around the world will be in Birmingham for a 10-day event where they will compete in 60 different sports. In order to help these athletes get around, stay hydrated and feel welcome, they need help from the community. 'In total of volunteers, we're hoping for 2,500,' The 2025 WPFG Marketing Manger Paige Bagby said. As of Wednesday, volunteer turnout was less than 50%. 'Right now, we're just trying to fill the roster as fast as we can,' Bagby said. Some of the sports that desperately need volunteers are: Push Pull CrossFit Ultimate Firefighter Toughest Competitor Stair Race Muster Bench Press 'Alabama knows southern hospitality and certainly can contribute in that way,' Bagby said. Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith accuses district attorney of lying about severity of charges against him Volunteers can be from all over Alabama, the country and the world. Organizers also need vendors for the event. 'Mayor Bell actually said it best when he said, 'Beer and the Barons brought Birmingham back,' Eric Meyer said. Meyer is the co-founder of Cahaba Brewery located in downtown Birmingham. His local brewery is a 'Proud Host' for the 2025 WPFG. That means they'll provide beers for Athlete Village and a space for teams to meet up before competing. 'The ability to showcase people what Birmingham has to offer, you can't really pass up on that,' Meyer said. Meyer also gets to showcase a talent and hobby of his – jujutsu. 'Being a firefighter doing jujutsu, getting the opportunity to compete is huge,' Meyer said. Meyer will be representing Mountain Brook Fire station #2, and given he'll be going up against fighters from other countries, he is also representing the United States of America. 'To be a firefighter for 22 years and to have this opportunity right here in Birmingham, I mean that's huge to be able to represent the USA right here in town,' Meyer said. 'I couldn't ask for anything better.' Click this link if you would like to help volunteer. More information on the World Police and Fire Games can be found on the event's website. Female athletes appeal landmark NCAA settlement, saying it violates federal antidiscrimination law

Eight female athletes filed an appeal Wednesday of a landmark NCAA antitrust settlement, arguing that women would not receive their fair share of $2.7 billion in back pay for athletes who were barred from making money off their name, image and likeness. US District Judge Claudia Wilken approved the settlement last week, clearing the way for direct payments from universities to athletes and the end of the NCAA's amateurism model. The athletes who appealed the settlement competed in soccer, volleyball and track. They are Kacie Breeding of Vanderbilt; Lexi Drumm, Emma Appleman, Emmie Wannemacher, Riley Hass, Savannah Baron and Elizabeth Arnold of the College of Charleston; and Kate Johnson of Virginia. They have standing to appeal because they previously filed objections to the proposed settlement. AP Ashlyn Hare, one of the attorneys representing the athletes, said in a statement that the settlement violates Title IX, the federal law that bans sex-based discrimination in education. 'We support a settlement of the case, but not an inaccurate one that violates federal law. The calculation of past damages is based on an error that ignores Title IX and deprives female athletes of $1.1 billion,' Hare said. 'Paying out the money as proposed would be a massive error that would cause irreparable harm to women's sports.' Advertisement The law firm representing the plaintiffs in the settlement issued a statement saying the appeal would delay payments to hundreds of thousands of athletes by a minimum of several months. 'These attorneys are pursuing an appeal based on a Title IX issue that Judge Wilken already disposed of correctly, quickly and multiple times,' the statement said. The House settlement figures to financially benefit football and basketball stars at the biggest schools, who are likely to receive a big chunk of the $20.5 million per year that colleges are permitted to share with athletes over the next year. AP Advertisement Some athletes in other sports that don't make money for their schools could lose their partial scholarships or see their roster spots cut. 'This is a football and basketball damages settlement with no real benefit to female athletes,' Hare said. 'Congress has expressly rejected efforts to exempt revenue-generating sports like football and basketball from Title IX's antidiscrimination mandate. The NCAA agreed with us. Our argument on appeal is the exact same argument the conferences and NCAA made prior to settling the case.' The appeal was filed by the law firm Hutchinson Black and Cook of Boulder, Colorado, and was first reported by Front Office Sports. It would be heard by the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
