World reacts to Israeli strike on Iran over nuclear programme

Israel said early on Friday it had struck Iranian nuclear targets to block Tehran from developing atomic weapons, and Iranian media and witnesses reported explosions including at the country's main uranium enrichment facility.
Calling it a 'decisive moment in Israel's history', Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the country was also targeting Iranian scientists working on a nuclear bomb and missile factories in an operation that would continue for days.
Israel declared a state of emergency in anticipation of retaliatory missile and drone strikes by Tehran.
Here are some reactions from top officials and governments around the world:
US secretary of state Marco Rubio
'Tonight, Israel took unilateral action against Iran. We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region.'
'Let me be clear: Iran should not target U.S. interests or personnel.'
Australian foreign minister Penny Wong
'Australia is alarmed by the escalation between Israel and Iran. This risks further destabilising a region that is already volatile. We call on all parties to refrain from actions and rhetoric that will further exacerbate tensions.
'We all understand the threat of Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile program represents a threat to international peace and security, and we urge the parties to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy.'
New zealand prime minister Christopher Luxon
'It's a really unwelcome development in the Middle East. The risk of miscalculation is high. That region does not need any more military action, and risk associated with that.'

Iran's Esfahan and Natanz nuclear sites significantly damaged, says Israeli military official

Iran's Esfahan and Natanz nuclear sites were significantly damaged due to Israeli strikes on the two facilities, an Israeli military official said on Saturday. The official said that it would take more than a few weeks for Iran to repair damage at the two sites, adding that the strikes also killed nine senior nuclear Iranian scientists. Iran confirms limited damage at Iran's Fordow nuclear site, atomic body says Israel attacked over 150 targets in Iran with hundreds of munitions, the official said, adding that the aerial road to the Iranian capital Tehran was effectively open. He said that Iran fired hundreds of drones and missiles towards Israel, most of which were intercepted.

Pakistan urges UNSC to stop Israeli ‘aggression' against Iran

Pakistan called on the United Nation Security Council (UNSC) to stop Israel's aggression immediately and deny it the free hand and the impunity with which it 'continues to operate in defiance of international laws against Iran'. Addressing the UNSC, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said that Israel's 'blatant provocations' pose a grave threat to regional peace and stability. 'Iran has the right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter,' the representative said, adding that Israel's actions in Gaza, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen reflect a continuing pattern of unilateral militarism. Israel on Friday launched deadly strikes on Iran's military, nuclear targets, missile factories, killing armed forces commanders and top scientists. Tehran said Israel's brutal strikes on its military and nukes facilities were a 'declaration of war' and called on the UN Security Council (UNSC) to act against Israel. Later, Iran launched retaliatory strikes at Israel on Friday night, with explosions heard in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, the country's two largest cities. Israel's military said Iran fired fewer than 100 missiles and most were intercepted or fell short. The US military helped shoot down Iranian missiles headed for Israel, two US officials said. Meanwhile, in his address, Ahmad called on all parties to fulfill their respective obligations and responsibilities and avoid escalation. 'Even in these testing times, diplomatic engagement and dialogue must be prioritised.' He also reaffirmed Pakistan's support for the resolution of the Iran nuclear issue through peaceful means, diplomatic engagement and sustained dialogue.

Iran missile strike hits IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv

Missiles launched from Iran are intercepted, as seen from the city of Ashkelon, Israel, June 13. REUTERS/Amir Cohen Listen to article Iran launched a salvo of missile strikes on Israeli military sites in Tel Aviv, including the IDF headquarters, in retaliation for Israeli airstrikes on Iran's nuclear facilities and military leaders. The barrage of missiles breached Israel's Iron Dome defence system, causing explosions and damage in central Tel Aviv. At least one person was killed, and over 60 others were injured, including several critically. Rescue operations are ongoing, with emergency services working to assist those affected. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) had previously warned that their attacks on Tehran could last up to two weeks, targeting key Iranian military and nuclear sites. In response, Iran vowed "painful revenge," with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warning of "severe punishment" for Israel. In the enemy's attacks, several commanders and scientists have been martyred. God willing, their successors and colleagues will carry on with their duties without delay. — (@khamenei_ir) June 13, 2025 The United States has distanced itself from the Israeli strikes, urging Iran not to retaliate against US bases in the region. However, Iran has warned that any country assisting Israel will face consequences. Iran launched retaliatory ballistic missile strikes on Israel, killing at least three and injuring 91, Anadolu Agency reported late Friday. The missile barrage was in response to an unprecedented Israeli attack earlier the same day targeting Iranian nuclear and military facilities. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed launching missiles at multiple locations including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, as retaliation for the killing of senior Iranian generals and nuclear scientists. Israeli strikes, which began before dawn on Friday, hit sites in Tehran, Natanz, Isfahan, and Shiraz, killing at least 78—including top military commanders and key nuclear experts—and injuring over 320.
