Molly McCann knew it was time.
On a night short on finishes and completely devoid of KOs, McCann, a Liverpool women's MMA pioneer, fell victim to one of the four submission defeats at the O2 Arena in London.
As it turns out, it will be her last fight in the UFC and in the sport of MMA.
Following a first-round submission loss to late-replacement opponent Alexia Thainara, McCann removed her gloves and issued an emotional retirement speech in the Octagon.

McCann was critical of her own performance in light of the fact that Thainara was facing her on a week's notice. 'It's not good enough," McCann said. "I'm not coming in here just for the payday. The UFC deserves more. I deserve more, and you all deserve more.'
McCann laid her gloves in the center of the Octagon, and while she didn't say it in her post-fight interview with Michael Bisping, you get the feeling she'd made up her mind that she was going to walk away if she lost to Thainara.
Take a look at the post-fight interview:
McCann is a former Cage Warriors women's flyweight champion. She stormed on the UFC scene with a huge personality and fan-friendly fighting style in 2018. McCann earned a shot in the UFC that year, but she lost her promotional debut to submission wiz Gillian Robertson in September 2018.
Submission defense would turn out to be her Achilles' heel throughout her career. McCann finishes her career 14-8, with four of those losses coming by submission.
After losing to Robertson, McCann went on a run. She won three fights in a row in 2019. She lost back-to-back unanimous decisions to Taila Santos in her next two fights.
However, McCann rebounded with her most memorable streak as she won three straight. The win streak was highlighted by back-to-back KO wins via spinning back elbow.
McCann won a performance bonus in all three of those fights. Since the streak ended, McCann has gone just 2-4, with three of the losses coming by way of first-round submission finish.
At 34, McCann believes she has accomplished all that she can in the sport and is walking away as one of the region's most beloved fighters.
Here is a look at all of the results from UFC London.

Ian Machado Garry vows to box the ears off ex-UFC champ Belal Muhammad, gets response

Ian Machado Garry vows to box the ears off ex-UFC champ Belal Muhammad, gets response Ian Machado Garry is eyeing a former champion in his quest for UFC gold. Machado Garry (16-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) took to social media to dare former UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad (24-4 MMA, 15-4 UFC) to stand and trade with him. His comments come after Muhammad lost his title to Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 315 last month, where he opted to predominantly strike with the Aussie. "I believe Belal lost to JDM due to his ego trying to stand and bang when he should have taken JDM down," Machado Garry said in an Instagram post. "Surely he won't try to stand and bang with me? Surely not. I am going to box the ears off you because I'm the best in this division, hands down. Belal, learn from your last loss and never ever, ever, ever try and stand and bang with me." Muhammad responded to Machado Garry with a date for a potential fight. "I'll see you at msg." After Machado Garry defeated Carlos Prates by unanimous decision at UFC on ESPN 66 in April, he served as the title-fight backup for Muhammad vs. Della Maddalena at UFC 315, but his services weren't needed.

Justin Gaethje Threatens Retirement After UFC 317 Title Snub

Justin Gaethje Threatens Retirement After UFC 317 Title Snub originally appeared on Athlon Sports. UFC 317 is shaping up to be a mega event, with high stakes and elite names headlining the card. Ilia Topuria is making an aggressive leap—challenging immediately for the lightweight title—and he'll have to go through the ultra-resilient Charles Oliveira to claim it. The card is scheduled for Saturday, June 28, 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada. But while the spotlight burns bright on the main event, there's one lightweight contender who's glaringly absent from the picture—and he's not staying silent about it. Advertisement Former interim champion Justin Gaethje has made his frustration known. According to UFC commentator Jon Anik, who spoke with Gaethje in May on the Anik & Florian Podcast, the fighter was flat-out 'pissed' about being passed over for the UFC 317 title opportunity. UFC CEO Dana WhitePhoto by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC Now, his longtime manager Ali Abdelaziz has added more fuel to the fire. Speaking with Submission Radio on YouTube, Abdelaziz said: 'Justin Gaethje [should] fight the winner. He won three of his last four. He saved the UFC two times… The guy did so much for the sport. And if anyone said he doesn't deserve it—he said, "I'm not going to fight for the title, I'm just going to hang up my gloves."' 'He said, "I feel disrespected. I love being a UFC fighter. I love the UFC, but I feel the UFC have to love me back."' The UFC, and Dana White specifically, now face a pivotal decision. Should Gaethje be granted the next title shot? Or will rising contenders like Arman Tsarukyan or the surging Paddy Pimblett jump the line? Justin GaethjeGetty Images A rematch scenario isn't off the table either. Gaethje recently bounced back in impressive fashion at UFC 313, where he defeated Rafael Fiziev by unanimous decision in a dominant three-round showing in the co-main event. For Gaethje, however, the time for patience may be running out. Simone Biles ‘incinerated her legacy' with trans athlete posts: Riley Gaines

Riley Gaines broke down the personal attack Simone Biles levied on her on social media and what it really meant for the Olympic gold medalist and one of the greatest gymnasts of all-time. Gaines dropped the latest episode of the 'Gaines for Girls' podcast on OutKick and recorded the show a few hours after Biles came after her on X. Gaines gave Biles her flowers as one of the best athletes to have ever performed in sports, but said the posts put a bad mark on her resume. Advertisement 'In just two tweets, Simone Biles basically tarnished her reputation to anyone with a shred of honesty, to anyone with a moral compass and to anyone with an inherent innate desire to protect women, to fight for equal opportunity for both men and women especially as it pertains to sports,' she said. 'The conclusion I'm drawing based on the response we have seen over the past 12-ish hours at this point on social media, she's basically incinerated her legacy in just two tweets.' Biles launched into an attack on Gaines on Friday as the former NCAA All-American swimmer reacted to a transgender athlete winning a state championship in Minnesota softball. 3 Simone Biles attends Netflix's 'Simone Biles Rising' FYC event at Hollywood Athletic Club on June 02, 2025 in Hollywood, California. Getty Images Advertisement The Olympic gymnast called Gaines a 'bully' and said that 'no one in sports is safe with you around.' Gaines said during her podcast that she believed that Biles' post showed she may be finished competing in gymnastics with her apparent support of transgender athletes, taking a page out of Megan Rapinoe's playbook. Rapinoe said in 2023 she would support a transgender player on the US women's national team. She retired from the sport later that year. 'What she's done here is pull up the ladder behind her,' Gaines said of Biles. 'We've seen people like Megan Rapinoe do this. Simone Biles is just the latest where apparently she's done competing. Just like Megan Rapinoe did – waited until they were done competing to take a stance on this issue, which for the life of me I cannot understand. 3 Simone Biles of Team United States competes on the balance beam during the Artistic Gymnastics Women's All-Around Final on day six of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 at Bercy Arena on August 01, 2024 in Paris, France. Getty Images Advertisement 'Take me out of the equation. Again, I don't care about the personal attacks. I cannot for the life of me understand why Simone Biles, in the year 2025, would advocate for this.' Biles said she would welcome a debate or discussion to talk about the issue of transgender athletes in girls' and women's sports. Gaines has been at the forefront of championing fairness in women's sports since she tied with Lia Thomas in the 2022 NCAA Championships. 'I think she blindly advocated for this without actually thinking about the effects of what this would look like,' Gaines said. 'How no one would know Simone Biles if it weren't for women's gymnastics. … If her inclusive dream was a reality, she would have zero gold medals.'
