Indian women's hockey team loses 3-5 to Australia A in first game of Australia Tour

Indian Express26-04-2025

The Indian women's hockey team started off their tour of Australia with defeat, losing 3-5 against a clinical Australia A side at the Perth Hockey Stadium on Saturday. While India scored through Mahima Tete (27'), Navneet Kaur (45'), and Lalremsiami (50'), it was Neasa Flynn (3'), Olivia Downes (9'), Ruby Harris (11'), Tatum Stewart (21'), and Kendra Fitzpatrick (44') who netted for Australia A in a winning cause.
The match saw the Indian women's hockey team wearing black armbands during the match to mourn the innocent lives lost in the tragic Pahalgam attack on April 22. Hokey India stated that the women's team will continue wearing black armbands for the remainder of the Australia tour as a mark of respect and remembrance for the victims and their families.
The match was played at a frenetic pace with some end-to-end action. It was initially Australia A who asserted early control. Fittingly, the hosts broke the deadlock through a well-constructed field goal by Neasa Flynn in the third minute itself. By 11 minutes into the game, the Australia home side were 3-0 up on the scoreboard, with Olivia Downes (9') and Ruby Harris (11') scoring in quick succession after capitalising on defensive lapses from the Indians.
In the second quarter, Australia A were relentless in their attacks, and made it 4-0 after earning back-to-back penalty corners, one of which was converted by Tatum Stewart in the 21st minute.
India's valiant comeback
Despite the early onslaught, India showed resilience, and Mahima Tete (27') pulled a goal back with a sharp field goal, injecting some energy into the Indian side as they headed into half-time trailing 1-4. The second half started with Kendra Fitzpatrick (44') scoring their final goal of the day as Australia took a 5-1 lead.
The Indian team launched a counterattack and their efforts bore fruit when vice-captain Navneet Kaur (45') found the back of the net, narrowing the gap to 2-5. In the final quarter, both teams continued to create scoring opportunities. India showcased their fighting spirit once again when Lalremsiami (50') slotted home a fine field goal, keeping India's hopes of a comeback alive. Despite some late pressure, India could not find the net again, and the match concluded with Australia A securing a 5-3 victory.

Vijay Mallya ‘overwhelmed' by podcast gaining 2 crore views, says ‘fills my heart with joy, factual story being heard…'

Vijay Mallya, the former owner of 2025 IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines, has reacted to the reception of his extensive podcast with YouTuber Raj Shamani. The podcast, titled 'Vijay Mallya Podcast: Rise & Downfall Of Kingfisher Airlines, Loans & RCB', has so far garnered 2 crore views on YouTube, besides multiple clips being shared on other social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. In a post on X on June 10, Vijay Mallya wrote: 'To say that I am humbled and overwhelmed is well short of what I truly feel.' 'A big heartfelt thank you to all those who took the time to watch my 4 hour plus podcast with @rajshamani 20 million views on YouTube alone in 4 days and god knows how many more reposts on Instagram and Facebook fills my heart with joy that my true factual story is being heard. May god bless you all. (sic)' he added. Liquor baron Vijay Mallya, fled India in 2016 after being accused in a bank loan default case of over ₹ 9,000 crore. During the podcast he denied all allegations and issued a rare apology to his former employees while reflecting on the fall of Kingfisher Airlines. He also spoke at length about his first media appearance in nine years, the rise and collapse of Kingfisher, and how he founded the IPL franchise team RCB. When asked by when Shamani, 'Would you be willing to return to country if you are assured fair time'. The fugitive responded, 'If I am assured, Absolutely I will. I will think about it seriously.' On the allegations of financial misconduct, Vijay Mallya said, 'You may call me a fugitive for not going to India post March, but I didn't run away. I flew on a prescheduled visit. Fair enough, I didn't return for reasons that I consider are valid… so if you want to call me a fugitive, go ahead. But where is the 'chor' (thief) coming from? Where is the 'chori' (theft)? From where is the 'chor' [thief] comming from? Where is 'chori' [theft]?' Vijay Mallya lives in Britain at present, and has been embroiled in a long legal battle with lenders – as well as the Indian authorities – following the 2012 collapse of his defunct Kingfisher Airlines. He is accused of defrauding a consortium of Indian banks of over ₹ 9,000 crore (approximately $1.2 billion), primarily through loans granted to Kingfisher Airlines. In February, Mallya informed the Karnataka High Court that the ₹ 6,200 crore debt he owes to the banks has been recovered 'multiple times over,' and requested a detailed statement of accounts showing the amounts recovered from him, his liquidated company United Breweries, and other certificate debtors.

Bharat Arun backs Kuldeep Yadav to achieve 'success' like Shane Warne in Test series vs England

Kuldeep Yadav. New Delhi: Former Indian bowling coach Bharat Arun is confident that wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav can emulate Shane Warne's success during India's upcoming five-match Test series against England, beginning June 20th. This series also marks the start of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. Arun praised Kuldeep's bowling skills, suggesting he possesses the talent to succeed in England, drawing a comparison to Shane Warne's past achievements in the country. 'Wrist spinners have always proven to be effective, particularly in England. Even early on, when there's a bit of moisture in the pitch, wrist spinners can get some assistance. The rough areas created by fast bowlers also play a role. However, making use of the rough is an art in itself. It's not just about bowling. When we think of such bowlers, Shane Warne immediately comes to mind. Kuldeep possesses the skills required to succeed in England. Although the current Indian bowling attack is inexperienced, it has immense potential,' Arun told Revsportz. Kuldeep Yadav's limited Test experience in England, specifically a wicketless nine-over spell in 2018, reflects his infrequent selection for India in matches outside the subcontinent. He has only featured in two Tests across South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia. Following Ashwin's retirement, Kuldeep Yadav's inclusion in India's starting eleven is uncertain. He remains a potential key player, particularly at Lord's and the Oval, but faces competition from Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja for a place in the team. Shubman Gill will captain India's upcoming tour of England, marking a new era for the team following Rohit Sharma's retirement.
