No Malaysians Recruited Into Bangladeshi-Linked Militant Network

KUALA BERANG, June 29 (Bernama) -- Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has confirmed that no Malaysians were recruited into a foreign militant network linked to Bangladeshi nationals, which was recently uncovered by authorities.
He said investigations by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Special Branch revealed that the group, which aimed to spread extremist ideology rooted in Islamic State (IS) beliefs, involved only Bangladeshi nationals.
'Their activities were focused on violent extremism with the objective of toppling the government in their country of origin (Bangladesh),' he said.
Saifuddin was speaking to reporters after launching the Kampung Angkat MADANI and Sekolah Angkat MADANI programmes under the People's Volunteer Corps (RELA) 2025 initiative at the Hulu Terengganu District Council Hall here.
'It is important to inform the public that our security forces are on high alert. If such activities are not addressed firmly, they could pose a serious threat to national security,' he added.
Saifuddin had earlier revealed that police dismantled the foreign militant network with the arrest of 36 Bangladeshi nationals suspected of direct involvement in the radical movement. The arrests were made in a three-phase security operation in Selangor and Johor starting April 24.
In another development, Saifuddin said the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) will soon undergo restructuring to enhance its effectiveness, with the Royal Malaysia Police taking the lead, supported by other key agencies.
'Previously, four agencies, the police, Bank Negara, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and others, shared oversight of the NSRC which led to certain operational shortcomings.
'Under the new structure, the police will directly receive scam reports, record the necessary details, and notify the relevant banks immediately to freeze the victim's account. Efforts to recover stolen funds will follow promptly,' he said.

'No cracks in PKR': Rafizi, Nik Nazmi quit Cabinet, not party — Saifuddin

PUTRAJAYA: PKR election director Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has downplayed concerns over ministers resigning following the party's recent electoral setbacks, saying the party has endured far more turbulent times and emerged stronger. "When reflecting on what has happened within PKR, it is important to recall that we initially began as the Madani civil society movement. At that time, people gave us just three months before saying we would fail," he told Berita Harian in a special interview. Saifuddin added that PKR's own founding was met with scepticism and yet it contested and won five parliamentary and state assembly seats. "In 2004, we only held onto Permatang Pauh, but by 2008 we had become the largest opposition with 33 seats," he added. Recalling the aftermath of the Sheraton Move, Saifuddin said the party was thought to be on the verge of collapse as people such as Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin were not minor figures. "Still, we got back on our feet, reorganised, and carried on," he added. He said PKR has experienced all manner of political upheavals and internal shifts and, while outsiders may panic, the party had always been able to recover. On the resignations of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad from their Cabinet positions, Saifuddin said these should not be conflated with party desertions. "Rafizi did not leave the party. He merely stepped down from his ministerial post out of principle. That is all, and we respect that. "The same goes for Nik Nazmi—he did not leave the party. He stepped down as a minister but remains within the party," he added. Saifuddin highlighted that what mattered most was that PKR members and leaders had clarity on the party's direction. "Most importantly, we give our assurance to our partners in the unity government that what is happening is part of PKR's political dynamics, and we remain committed to staying in government," he added. On May 28, Nik Nazmi, who is the natural resources and environmental sustainability minister, announced that he had submitted his resignation letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, effective July 4. His announcement came about three hours after Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli announced his resignation as economy minister effective June 17.

Three lives lost after boat sinks

JERTIH: Two children were among three killed after a boat capsized off Pulau Perhentian. Besut OCPD Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said the deceased were identified as S. Arumugam, 40, his three-year-old daughter A. Sarrvihka, and a relative, V. Vennpani, aged 10. The incident occurred at about 10.30pm on Saturday. 'The boat, carrying 15 passengers, had capsized during a storm,' Supt Azamuddin told a press conference yesterday, Bernama reported. He said investigation showed that none of the passengers were wearing life jackets. The boat skipper, a local man in his 20s, has been detained to assist in the investigation. Supt Azamuddin said the man tested positive for drugs and has a record for drug-related offences. State Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritime) director Maritime Captain Hamiludin Che Awang said his team mounted a search and rescue operation after being alerted about the incident at 10.55pm. He said an investigation would be conducted to identify the exact cause of the incident. 'We call on all boat operators to comply with safety instructions and check the weather forecast before embarking on a journey,' he added. Meanwhile, the Terengganu Mentri Besar's special officer (non-Islamic affairs) Dr K. Balachandran said the remains of the deceased will be taken to Butterworth, Penang and Sungai Petani, Kedah, for their final rites. 'A family member informed us that the 15 passengers, from four related families, had arrived for a holiday on Friday and were due to travel back to Sungai Petani and Butterworth yesterday,' he said. Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, meanwhile, disclosed that the licence of the boat operator had expired. He said that according to preliminary findings, both the travel agency and boat operator had violated several laws and regulations. 'These include operating with an expired licence since April and failing to ensure that passengers wore life jackets,' he said in a statement. Tiong described the incident as gross negligence of safety since the travel agency had hired a boatman with a drug and criminal record. He issued a stern warning to all tour operators against compromising on the safety of tourists while trying to make a profit.
