Korean police bar use of ChatGPT for sensitive data amid leak concerns
KNPA, LG CNS working to develop generative AI specifically catered to police investigations
The Korean National Police Agency has issued a nationwide notice to police stations, warning officials not to input investigative or work-related information into generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, citing concerns over potential data leaks.
A KNPA official confirmed to The Korea Herald on Friday, on condition of anonymity, that the agency had sent out a notice titled 'Precautions when using generative AI tools such as ChatGPT' to all police stations.
The written directive "emphasizes that investigative or work-related data as well as personal information of those involved in the case should not be entered when working with generative AI," the official explained.
The agency also advised police officers to 'refrain from responding to questions asked by generative AI that are related to security' and to 'ensure thorough review measures have been taken when implementing AI for investigative projects related to information technology," they added.
When asked if investigators often use generative AI, another investigative police official, surnamed Kim, told The Korea Herald that 'using generative AI like ChatGPT has become common among many young police officials in recent years.'
'I know that ChatGPT, for example, has helped many police officials, including myself, when reviewing relevant laws or investigative cases from the past that we may not be aware of,' Kim continued.
In March 2023, the KNPA also stated that it would work with ChatGPT to draft essential documents in English when dealing with cross-border crimes to enhance efficiency.
At the time, the KNPA stated that there were no concerns of personal data or confidential investigative information from being inputted, as ChatGPT would only be used to generate documents in English.
As the use of generative AI continues to expand within the force, concerns have been raised about risks associated with inputting sensitive information, including personal data or confidential matters related to police investigations.
A senior police official told JoongAng Ilbo, 'If investigation records from an internal police network are transferred to external AI-generated websites, the risk of personal information leakage or the exposure of confidential investigation details increases.'
'Using ChatGPT to refine parts of investigative reports is like letting important investigative information accumulate beyond the police's control.'
In a response to such concerns, the KNPA confirmed that it has been working with LG CNS since the beginning of 2025 to develop a generative AI model catered to aiding police officials in investigations, using LG's AI model, Exaone.
Once the investigative, AI-based support service is fully developed, the service will be implemented into the internal system of the police force, according to the KNPA.
It will be able to summarize written statements or show similar cases based on the type of crime while analyzing underlying issues of an investigation to help officers pinpoint and focus on important aspects during their investigations. The AI service will also assist in drafting investigative documents.

Looking to the next three to five years, Kim stressed the importance of creating value in customers' time and experience. Woman who pestered IU online slapped with another fine, for another attack
Court awards 3 million won fine for malicious comment, after the writer had already been fined for the same offense last year A 40-year-old woman previously punished for contempt against IU has been sentenced to a fine for another malicious comment, once again against the K-pop superstar. Seoul Central District Court found the defendant surnamed Kim guilty of insult, a criminal offense in South Korea, sentencing her to 3 million won ($2,200) fine. The defendant was accused of posting sexually offensive comments against the 32-year-old singer and actor, along with the accusation that her agency Edam Entertainment had bribed the judges in recent litigations. Kim denied writing the comments, and claimed that they did not specify a target and it did not damage IU's reputation. The court rejected the defendant's claims, pointing out that Kim had already been punished for similar crimes and that she had not been forgiven by the victim. But the court issued a relatively lenient sentence in giving her the same punishment handed when she had no priors, as the offense had been committed before she was indicted for her previous offense. In the previous online attack against the victim, Kim wrote comments disparaging IU for her singing and attire in April 2022. Kim said the comments merely expressed her personal preference and that her linguistic skills are limited due to her mental condition, but the court sentenced her to 3 million won fine in December of last year. Edam Entertainment has been engaged in legal battles against those posting malicious comments against IU, with the agency saying in November that it has filed for criminal punishment against 180 individuals. IU, one of the most popular and influential figures in the Korean pop culture, has been subject to online attacks for years. She was recently targeted by supporters of disgraced ex-President Yoon Suk Yeol, expelled for his martial law imposition in December, when she paid for food and drinks to be provided for protesters calling for Yoon's impeachment earlier this year.

Russia's security chief meets Kim Jong-un to discuss Ukraine, peninsula issues
Russia's Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang for discussions on Ukraine and security issues involving the Korean Peninsula, the Russian Embassy in North Korea said Wednesday. In a Facebook post, the embassy said the two sides discussed cooperation in various fields and exchanged views on the situation surrounding the Ukrainian crisis and the Korean Peninsula. Shoigu departed for home later in the day, it added. Russia's Ria Novosti also reported on Shoigu's meeting with Kim, citing the embassy's social media post. The Russian news agency Tass reported earlier that Shoigu traveled to the North on instructions from President Vladimir Putin. The visit came amid speculation that Kim may visit Russia for a summit with Putin to mark the first anniversary of their signing of a mutual defense treaty in June last year, which led to North Korea's deployment of thousands of troops on the Russian side in the war against Ukraine. Citing Russia's Security Council, Tass said that Kim and Shoigu are expected to discuss the implementation of the comprehensive strategic partnership treaty and the commemoration of North Korean forces who fought in the Russia-Ukraine war. The agenda may also include international issues, such as those involving Ukraine, it said. Shoigu's visit came less than three months after he traveled to North Korea to meet the North's leader to discuss cooperation between the two nations. His trip also came just a week after North Korea's State Security Minister Ri Chang-dae held a meeting with him in Moscow on the occasion of an international meeting of high-level security officials. During that meeting, Ri and Shoigu reportedly discussed issues related to North Korea's deployment of troops to support Russia in the war against Ukraine. Amid stringent international sanctions, North Korea has turned to Russia for resources and cooperation and is believed to have received rare defense technologies to advance its nuclear and missile arsenals in exchange for troop deployment and arms supplies.
