Caroline's charity shop challenge 'feels joyous' this time around
A woman wearing charity clothes for a year, a decade after she took on the challenge for the first time, is hoping the changes she has experienced give hope to others who are in a "difficult place".Caroline Jones, 56, from Harpenden, Hertfordshire, began Knickers Model's Own in 2015 to raise money for Cancer Research UK while in the early stages of grieving for her mother, Mary Benson. She wore clothes from the charity's shops for 365 days and posted her outfits on social media. This year, she is posting her 2025 pictures alongside the corresponding 2015 images, and she said her grief "feels lighter" and she was generally "more confident".
Mrs Benson, who died from breast cancer in October 2014, had been a volunteer at the charity's Harpenden shop for 13 years, so Ms Jones decided on a year-long campaign to honour her memory.Naming the challenge to reflect that only her underwear was new, she hoped to raise £1,000, but her daily posts became so popular she raised about £70,000.About four months into her latest challenge she said she hoped she could show others going through difficult times that things did change.
"[This time] it feels joyous," she said."My grief is much lighter and being 10 years older I feel more confident. I do feel more accepting of who I am, what I look like... hopefully that inner confidence shines through in my photographs."She said that previously she was "hiding a lot behind my eyewear, behind my hair", and added: "I think that was probably me not wanting to be in front of a camera, thinking 'Am I good enough?' I was harder on myself back then."Now, because I feel lighter in myself, I feel like I'm doing this for women to just look at themselves in their mid-50s and say, 'We are still interested in fashion, we belong, we are here'."
What Ms Jones is finding hardest is looking back at the 10-year-old images."I can see my raw grief in those early photographs, my tears never far from the surface," she said."I was a mother with young children and I was grieving and had a lot on my plate."I remember how I felt vividly, whether it was a good, bad or really bad day, and I can really remember every single emotion, so that's sometimes been difficult."But when I have difficult moments, I always think about my mum. She's always there in the back of my mind and this is why I'm doing it."
Ms Jones said she was also seeing different people in charity shops and having different conversations."It's wonderful to see that younger generation, 25 and younger," she said."I've definitely noticed [that age] probably weren't shopping there 10 years ago."With so much now available online, she is having more conversations to champion the "bricks and mortar" charity shop."You make your best decisions when you're holding something and trying it on," she said."Fashion is not downloadable – you can't touch it through a screen."
A decade on from the first time around, Ms Jones said the joy of physically finding an item in a charity shop remained the same and that it was not about what was "on trend" but about "the item in the corner that no one else is looking at"."It's very freeing wearing second hand. It gives you total carte blanche to do what you want."

The mammoth melee has, frustratingly, yet to come to fruition as Jones has publicly toyed with the prospect of retirement. And White admits the fate of the fight is ultimately in the hands of the former long-reigning light-heavyweight champion. When asked about the prospect of a shock bout between Jones and ex-champ Francis Ngannou, White insisted: 'It's Aspinall's fight. READ MORE ON JONES VS ASPINALL JON GONE? Jon Jones trolls Dana White and UFC fans as he finally reveals fight plans 'I mean, we've been talking to this kid about it forever and it's his fight. 'Listen, you can't make people fight, if Jon doesn't want to fight, you can't make him fight. "We can try to make him fight, we can throw things at him that inspire him to want to fight, but we'll figure it out." According to White, former pound-for-pound king Jones "AGREED" to put off retirement to share the octagon with Brit bruiser Aspinall. UFC boss Dana White shoots down Jon Jones vs Francis Ngannou fight "You guys told me the crazy s**t that's going on Instagram, and all these other places, but yes, I've been saying Jon is going to fight Tom.' White has faced a deluge of calls - including a 200,000-people-strong petition - to strip Jones of his heavyweight crown. But Jones recently hinted he'll relinquish the belt before it's taken away from him, saying: 'I spoke to the UFC a long time ago about what my future plans were. "I haven't really worked out since my last fight in New York City. 'Honestly, I believe it's been in the UFC's best interest to keep presenting me as the company's champion - not Tom. "I've just been playing the role of the company man by doing nothing at all… and holding the position. If Jon doesn't want to fight, you can't make him fight." Dana White on Jon Jones 'And truthfully, it's been incredibly lucrative. "I've made more money off of Tom being the interim champ than Tom has himself. "It sucks to see the rest of the division get slowed down like this, but that has nothing to do with me. I don't pull the strings. 'And remember, you can't strip a guy like me at this point I give the belt up freely. Veni, vidi, vici.' Jones hasn't fought since his Madison Square Garden mauling of Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 last November. Interim titleholder Aspinall, meanwhile, has been twiddling his thumbs since his 60-second demolition of Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 last July.

Armed officer sues Police Scotland over suspension after TikTok Tallia Storm incident
Steven Jones is taking Police Scotland to court after being suspended over an incident involving singer Tallia Storm. A firearms officer is taking legal action against Police Scotland alleging he was unfairly suspended after footage of an "incident" was shared on TikTok. Steven Jones, 35, appeared before an employment tribunal in Edinburgh on Monday, June 9, where he is suing the force for sex discrimination. Mr Jones claims his actions were unfairly labelled 'misogynistic' and that he was penalised due to Police Scotland management's concerns about the armed response unit being seen as having a 'boys' club mentality'. The tribunal heard that the incident occurred on March 1, 2024, when a video posted by Scottish singer Tallia Storm showed Mr Jones and his colleague stepping out of their marked police vehicle on Edinburgh's Cowgate to take a photo with her. In the footage, Mr Jones can be seen taking the picture while his partner poses with Storm, reports EdinburghLive. Mr Jones told the tribunal he was later 'chastised' by senior officers who described his conduct as 'misogynistic' and criticised him for stopping in a busy pedestrian and traffic area. He said the force reacted negatively due to public backlash over the video. He believes he was treated unfairly because of 'past instances of misogyny' involving other officers in the firearms unit, and that his own actions were wrongly framed in that context. He told the tribunal: "Because of the word 'misogyny,' it made me feel it was because I as a male interacting with a female that it was viewed through that lens. If a member of the other sex had that interaction, it wouldn't have happened." His solicitor, Mr Merck, referenced a previous high-profile case involving female firearms officer Rhona Malone, who received nearly £1 million in compensation after an employment tribunal ruled she had been victimised by the force on the basis of her sex. Mr Jones believes that case influenced how his own behaviour was judged. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! I was extremely upset and shocked because I knew I had to disclose to my partner what I had been accused of and explain to my family." At the time of the incident, Mr Jones and his colleague were on "parliament duty," patrolling areas around the Scottish Parliament including the Cowgate and Grassmarket. While driving through Cowgate, they encountered a large crowd and slowed the vehicle. Mr Jones said he then recognised Tallia Storm in the crowd. "I knew who she was due to the publicity and her being the Capital DJ host at the time. She was on the side of trams and buses," he said. He and his partner left the vehicle — which held secured firearms — for what he estimated to be about a minute, possibly less. Mr Jones claimed the singer was "ecstatic" about the photo opportunity and added: "There was no rude behaviour or catcalling. I present myself courteously and was calm in the situation. We engaged in conversation to ascertain that a Q&A was being held. It looked like she was making her way over. We very quickly introduced ourselves, it was a polite interaction." He said that throughout the encounter, they ensured their police vehicle remained secure. Despite this, Mr Jones was later suspended — a sanction he believes was disproportionate. He told the tribunal: "It is our job to engage with people. We don't police with fear, we police by good interactions with the public. The last thing I'd ever want is the public to fear the police and to fear me. I always speak to people as a human being. I meet them where they are." Mr Jones joined Police Scotland in March 2017 and completed his authorised firearms officer training in June 2023. He told the tribunal he had ambitions of becoming a national firearms instructor and had been encouraged to apply for a role in counterterrorism. But since the incident, he says he has been demoted to a desk-based role, handling "low-level daily calls" — a stark contrast to his previous work dealing with "very high risk incidents" and high-stakes decision making within the firearms unit. The five-day tribunal, overseen by Employment Judge Amanda Jones, continues.

The six locations in North Wales rumoured for House of the Dragon filming
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Six film location sites in northwest Wales are said to have been earmarked for season three of HBO's House of The Dragon (HoTD). Some were used in summer 2023, others are new. Three large sets are already taking shape at Dinorwig Quarry near Llanberis, which in season two served as an HoTD backdrop for Harrenhal Castle, the largest fortification in Westeros. Props assembled so far suggest the aftermath of a visit by a fire-breathing dragon to the Harrenhal battle camp in the Riverlands. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has hinted of more filming at Traeth Llanddwyn and Newborough Forest in southwest Anglesey, where some trees are being felled. According to a source close to the production team, film crews will also be returning to Penmon in south west Anglesey. Other locations are in Eryri (Snowdonia), including Cwm Idwal and its iconic lake in the Ogwen Valley, Gwynedd. Two sites near Capel Curig, Conwy, have also been scouted. A seventh site, in Nant Peris at the foot of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), will reportedly be used as the production team's base. Northwest Wales was one of the main stars of season two, when eight locations were used. Half of these were on Anglesey, including Beaumaris and Porth-y-Cŵch. Llanddwyn Beach, near Newborough village, saw a good deal of filming and is said to have provided the backdrop for parts of Dragonstone. In a social media post NRW said an un-named TV production company was back on site this week. They were undertaking 'small scale preparation works' at the Twyni Penrhos area of Newborough Forest. This involved removing a 'small number of unsafe trees', along with rough vegetation and tree stumps. The area will be restored to dune grassland and native scrub which will benefit wildlife and the local environment and provide accommodation space for filming equipment. "There will be no disruption to visitors.' At present it's unclear if HoTD will be returning to Trefor Quarry on the Gwynedd coast, which was transformed into Dragonstone Castle for season two. Other sites featured in the second series included the Ogwen Valley and around Penmachno Roman Bridge, near Betws-y-Coed. (Image: HBO) A source claimed the Nant Peris site above Llanberis will be the gathering point for actors and extras. 'A large marquee is to be erected and the actors will be ferried to the various sites in minibuses and 4x4s,' they added. Production, location and safety crews are to be staying in Caernarfon and Bangor. Locals have reported seeing HoTD teams picking up visitor litter from Dinorwic Quarry and placing bins to ensure it's spotless when vacated. Season three is expected to be released in late 2026.
